Sub Shop's hours and front door
Molly R.

There's two things the most genuine of Springfield haunts really love: wonky, werewolf-like hours and being cash-only. For the most part, though, I've accepted this as a way of life 'round these here humble parts. The Sub Shop operates on these small-town standards, so come prepared. Still, you're in for a truly quality sub sammy experience. The Sub Shop is like the Subway that could have once been, maybe (probably not, but I needed a comparison point); but instead of surly juggalos as your sandwich artists, you've got uber-friendly college-age kids. Instead of slightly ill-looking veggies, you've got rocking produce. Instead of sad, strangely reflective meat, you've got the good stuff. Long story short, this business means business, as long as it's between 10 and 2:30 on weekdays. After hmm-ing and hahh-ing over the very brief menu, I selected the Italian sub on wheat, which featured pastrami, salami, cheese, peppers, lettuce, and sub sauce (Italian dressing). Even though I scooped off he banana peppers and excess dressing like the picky jerk that I am, I still liked it and appreciated the intense flavor of the meat and dressing. However, I kicked myself for not getting the meatball sub (it was on special). But $7.25 for an awesome sammy, chips and a soda isn't bad at all. The location I went to downtown was very bright and spotless, also, which was merely a small bonus after the overall great experience I had. And it was crazy busy. And it was faster than like, Taco Bell even. Why not five stars? I think I need to try something else to get me addicted and make me want to REALLY come back for more, but it's only a matter of time.

Simple and good sandwiches. No flash no fancy decor. Just you and some sandwiches from some folks who do it for the love of the game

Loved my Reuben sandwich and I loved the price. I'm sad I didn't know about this place sooner.

We absolutely love this place. They have the best sandwiches, homemade soups, and pasta salad. My…read moreson and I usually get a large muffaletta and split it. When I say large, I mean it is massive. You need at least 2 to 3 people to eat the sandwich. Even if you took a quarter of the sandwich, you would be good to go for a meal. Often sometimes we will eat a quarter of it and take the other piece home after we split the whole thing in half. The soups here are phenomenal. They are made from scratch and they go fast. OH, and don't let me forget about the chocolate cake. It is wonderful! I try to get a piece every time I come. I believe the chocolate cake is homemade. Definitely a must have! The restrooms are well-stocked and usually pretty clean. The staff are pretty friendly,, with the caveat being that when the owner is checking you out at the register, he can be a bit prickly around the edges. Your main problem here will be finding a place to park if you go during a normal meal time. We usually park in the neighboring lot and walk over to the restaurant. Don't sleep on this place. It is SO good! Check it out for yourself next time you're in the area. You won't be disappointed.

J. Parrino's Queen City Deli -- "More Than What Meats the Eye"…read more It's no wonder why J. Parrino's Queen City Deli is more than what meats the eye. The name behind it, Joe Parrino, is a renowned St. Louis restaurateur known for blending Italian tradition with classic St. Louis-style soups, sandwiches, and pastas -- and that mix absolutely shines here in Springfield. From the outside, you might not think much of it. But as they say, IYKYK. This is definitely not a book to judge by its cover. Tucked on the east side of Sunshine, it's the kind of local gem you'll want to keep in your lunch rotation. I started with the Milo Salad, and wow -- thick cuts of salami and pepperoni, fresh cheese, crisp lettuce, crunchy homemade croutons, and a perfectly sliced hard-boiled egg. The dressing took it to another level -- creamy like Caesar but with a tangy vinaigrette twist. Honestly, I almost forgot to take a photo because I couldn't stop eating. And that garlic breadstick? Fresh, soft, and buttery perfection. Next up was the Parrino Special, their house sandwich -- prosciutto, salami, and incredibly tender roast beef stacked between garlic bread buns and topped with a house salad. Every bite was a dream: the crunch of the bread and salad with the tenderness of the meats created layers of flavor and texture that just worked. Pure happiness between garlic bread. The team here is friendly, fast, and full of good recommendations -- you can tell they care about what they're serving. If you're looking for a local spot that nails the trifecta of soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta, Queen City Deli might just become your new favorite lunch stop.

Freshly made sandwiches and great service! Good variety as well. They have classic Philly…read morecheesesteak options and other fancier/ less common options. I got to try the BLT and the Halle(peño) Berry. The BLT was pretty generic, hard to mess up a BLT. I was skeptical about the Halle Berry sandwich but it was actually super good! It had cheesesteak beef, cream cheese, grape jelly, and cream cheese. It was such a perfect blend of savory and sweet. If you're not good with spice though, I'd recommend taking out the jalapeños. Overall a good, reliable hot sandwich shop with plenty of options.

Floors were kinda sticky and no tables had been wiped down so we brushed crumbs out of the way and sat down at a table. I tried the Philly Cheesesteak and it wasn't anything close to a Philly in my opinion. There was hardly any cheese to be found and it was really dry. The steak didn't have much flavor either. Maybe they were having an off night, but I was expecting more based off other reviews. I'm not saying they don't make other good sandwiches, but I don't really recommend their version of the Philly Cheesesteak. I did like the bread they used for the Philly. So that was good. If I'm in the area again I might give them another shot and try sometime different since it wasn't bad. It was just ok.
