A friend recommended this Sparta Academy so I called and spoke with one of the instructors. Mind you, I was already sold by my friend's recommendation and I wanted to sign up for the annual package that day. I called and was polite over the phone but right off the bat the guy was already annoyed by me calling. I asked if they taught street self defense such as how to defend yourself against an armed attacker with a knife, gun, 2X4, etc. and he became very rude after that. As if that question was offensive but to the other Martial art gyms I called that question didn't phase them. I didn't think that was an out of pocket question because I have been to gyms that solely focus on MMA cage fighting and they do not teach you how to disarm weapons from an attacker. Another important question I had was the parking since in LA it's insane finding street parking and I told him that I am very big on being on time. Then he threw a light insult at me insinuating that I must be late all the time for me to ask that. The final jab for me was when he told me that they have a parking structure available for their students located at the plaza their gym is at so I drive down there after the call and was still willing to sign up but as I pulled in to the parking lot the tenant yelled and stopped me telling me I cannot park down there then I told him I was trying to get to Sparta Academy and the tenant said that I needed to find parking on the street. I drove around and I couldn't find street parking for 15+ minutes so I just left and went to another MMA gym located 45 minutes away from me and just signed up with their annual package instead just because they were kind. It sucks because I just got a bad vibe all around from this gym and I pass it everyday since it's right near me. I was excited but I guess god really didn't want me to go here. It's like a fat person walking into the gym, if the receptionist is hostile over the phone they will go somewhere else that is inviting even if its a farther drive.

Oscar, the front desk manager, was truly one of a kind, he remembered everyone's name, was so personable, and his energy made the studio feel like home. All of the front desk staff are great, but Oscar's warmth was unforgettable, and I think the studio really thrived with that kind of welcoming vibe. Cory and Lo are incredible instructors. They go hard on us from start to finish, always bringing the energy and encouragement we need to push through. Lo's dance moves are next-level (love you, Lo!) and Cory's motivation is unmatched, you can tell they love what they do, and it makes a huge difference in class. The studio itself offers thoughtful touches like hair ties, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and all kinds of toiletries for anyone who wants to shower after class. Those details don't go unnoticed and make the experience even better. One thing I'd love to see is more variety in the playlists, maybe a little country or some Latino mixes to keep things fresh. Also, the workouts feel different depending on the instructor, and while some classes are more laid-back, I personally prefer the high-energy, sweat-dripping style that Cory and Lo bring. The room does get warm, which is challenging for me since I have multiple sclerosis, but I know others love that heated, intense vibe. Overall, BoxUnion is a solid studio with so much potential, and the energy from coaches like Cory and Lo really keeps me coming back. With a little more music variety and that welcoming, community vibe I remember from when Oscar was around, it could easily be a five-star experience.

I came 10 minutes before the class started, and she gave me the rundown and demonstrated the elemental punches. Next thing you know, the room is full of highly motivated people, bomb A** music, and I started to move my body quickly, throwing punches left and right. I'm a total boxing newbie, but I could still follow along and get a great sweat. You start by throwing punches without the gloves and then with them. There is also some floor work, abs, and total body movements. The last part is all you, baby, throwing punches and leaving everything behind. The facility is very organized and neat, and there are cubbies with locks on them, clean bathrooms, showers, towels, etc. You can rent or buy their hand wraps and boxing gloves. If it's your first time, you will get them for free. You can also bring your own! Parking -If you come to an early morning class, at 6 AM or 7 AM, you can find parking on the street by the meters, and you don't have to put coins in since it's free before 8 AM. This area gets bust, so if you come later, you will have to park in one of the lots nearby' there are plenty of lots in the area as this area is high tourist.

I decided to yelp kickboxing (thinking it would be fun to learn self defense while burning off calories) and was so lucky to come across this listing. When I saw 5 stars from all users, I thought "Could this place be that good, or do these trainers have a lot friends writing reviews for them?" It has now been a month since I started the class, and am hooked! Started out slow taking 1 class a week, then quickly progressed to 2-3 times a week. I wouldn't be surprised if in a month, I start going daily. Seriously, when I skip a day, I miss it. It's the best investment you'll make for yourself, with the added perk that you get to exercise with a great group of people. Everyone is super nice, and the trainers create a safe and fun learning environment. Honestly, if we could give this gym 10 stars, we would do it in a heart beat. Erik and Emily are amazing - they train with such ease, and are humbled when they see us improve and grow. Trust me, this is one gym membership that won't go to waste. You'll start noticing a difference in your body immediately...especially after your first class. You'll be surprised to feel muscles you didn't know existed (LOL...no joke).

This studio has plenty of complaints all over their yelp about horrible billing practices, not offering make-up classes (when out of town), etc. But because it is so close to where we live, I decided to give it a try. When I signed up, I was explicitly told that the membership was month-to-month and that I could cancel at any time. When summer break ended, I called to suspend my membership, but it was very difficult to reach anyone. I called the studio multiple times and left several messages with no response, which made the cancellation process unnecessarily frustrating. Eventually, I reached someone, but I was told that the next month had already been charged and that I would not receive a refund. They agreed to cancel the membership going forward. However, when the following month came, I was charged again. I went into the studio to resolve the issue and was told they use a third-party billing company and that they "have no control" over billing, and that I would need to contact the billing company myself. The staff was unhelpful and took no responsibility for resolving the problem. Based on my experience, this studio seems far more focused on collecting payments than on customer service or student satisfaction. If you're considering joining, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere and being very cautious about their billing practices.

Andrew is an amazing trainer and I highly recommend him. Unlike some "boxing" trainers who are only using boxing as a fitness gimmick and don't have real in-ring experience, Woods is the real deal, has impeccable technique and trains everyone from top contenders to NFL players, to people just looking to get in amazing shape while learning a useful skill to improve their confidence. What really sets Andrew apart to me is in he has a very positive spiritual energy and knows how to inspire everyone he crosses paths with. Whether he is training a highly skilled athlete preparing to box in the Olympics or a elderly Alzheimer's patient, he brings the same attention to detail, sense of humor, and human empathy to his work. He also knows how to cater to the specific needs of each individual client and to push them just enough where they are improving without being overwhelmed. If you are an Equinox gym member, Andrew teaches a class once a week at the West Los Angeles location. He also offers private training sessions and visits clients at their own homes. The one thing i've noticed from attending classes with Andrew is people keep coming back for more and getting better and better and more fit.
