I joined BoxUnion Santa Monica in June 2023, and it has been such a great part of my fitness…read moreroutine. Oscar, the front desk manager, was truly one of a kind, he remembered everyone's name, was so personable, and his energy made the studio feel like home. All of the front desk staff are great, but Oscar's warmth was unforgettable, and I think the studio really thrived with that kind of welcoming vibe. Cory and Lo are incredible instructors. They go hard on us from start to finish, always bringing the energy and encouragement we need to push through. Lo's dance moves are next-level (love you, Lo!) and Cory's motivation is unmatched, you can tell they love what they do, and it makes a huge difference in class. The studio itself offers thoughtful touches like hair ties, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and all kinds of toiletries for anyone who wants to shower after class. Those details don't go unnoticed and make the experience even better. One thing I'd love to see is more variety in the playlists, maybe a little country or some Latino mixes to keep things fresh. Also, the workouts feel different depending on the instructor, and while some classes are more laid-back, I personally prefer the high-energy, sweat-dripping style that Cory and Lo bring. The room does get warm, which is challenging for me since I have multiple sclerosis, but I know others love that heated, intense vibe. Overall, BoxUnion is a solid studio with so much potential, and the energy from coaches like Cory and Lo really keeps me coming back. With a little more music variety and that welcoming, community vibe I remember from when Oscar was around, it could easily be a five-star experience.

I came 10 minutes before the class started, and she gave me the rundown and demonstrated the elemental punches. Next thing you know, the room is full of highly motivated people, bomb A** music, and I started to move my body quickly, throwing punches left and right. I'm a total boxing newbie, but I could still follow along and get a great sweat. You start by throwing punches without the gloves and then with them. There is also some floor work, abs, and total body movements. The last part is all you, baby, throwing punches and leaving everything behind. The facility is very organized and neat, and there are cubbies with locks on them, clean bathrooms, showers, towels, etc. You can rent or buy their hand wraps and boxing gloves. If it's your first time, you will get them for free. You can also bring your own! Parking -If you come to an early morning class, at 6 AM or 7 AM, you can find parking on the street by the meters, and you don't have to put coins in since it's free before 8 AM. This area gets bust, so if you come later, you will have to park in one of the lots nearby' there are plenty of lots in the area as this area is high tourist.

I was finding it difficult to stay motivated enough to maintain a steady routine at a big brand gym…read moreand with my 40th birthday on the horizon, I needed something new to get me up from my desk. That's when I stumbled upon the boxing club at the Stables. With zero experience and a little online research about the owner, I decided to take advantage of a trial special with Cary and I immediately became hooked. The first few months introduced me to the sport and fundamentals of boxing, all kinds of soreness, and a dramatic increase to my core strength and flexibility. I honestly wasn't sure how much I would enjoy an instructor-lead class at first, but the sessions are a perfect mix of boxing and weight training, all at a speed that keeps you moving and sweating - resulting in a better workout than I used to get on my own spending twice as long at a standard gym. Plus, there is nothing quite like putting the fundamentals learned to the test when you get to spar under Cary's guidance. One year later and almost 30 pounds lighter, I'm seeing my body transform into something closer to what it was 10 years ago and my mental health has never been better. I would recommend the Stables to anyone looking for an excellent workout, whether you know anything about boxing or not.

I've been wanting to find something to get me excited about working out again. I've often thought about Boxing, but was intimidated with, well, getting my ass kicked. One day while perusing through Groupon, just looking for something to catch my interest, I find this deal for The Stables. Of course there's an incredibly gorgeous girl on the ad looking absolutely bad ass punching the shit out of a bag with her guns. "She's not real," I thought. Oh, but she is. I decided to take the leap. I needed a good ass kicking. Contacted The Stables immediately to schedule my Fundamentals class where you learn the basics. I get there and, Hey! There's that gorgeous girl on the ad (Cary)! She actually is real, and yes, she's fucking bad ass. I've taken Kickbox Cardio and Turbo Kick and all of that stuff. While fun and a decent workout, that is not what you're getting here. Here you need actual boxing supplies and you will hit your ex, your boss, that mofo that cut you off on your way to work...on the bag. Great stress reliever! Your form will be focused on heavily. Cary doesn't mess around and I like that shit. Classes are small, so don't think you can scrape by without really trying. And if you don't really want to try, why are you here? Classes have been a bit different each time I go, but you get jump rope time, floor time (where you learn combos), bag time (where you practice those combos), and speed bag time. She'll throw in some other kind of working out (squats, lunges, circuit) on top of all that and you. will. feel. it. I leave this place dripping in sweat and even though I may not feel like my muscles are thoroughly working while hitting the bag, the next day they let me know how worked they are. Hurts so good! So excited to continue and so glad I decided to take the leap. Thanks, Cary!

My old gym membership had expired and it was time for me to figure out what I wanted to do next. I started researching some options: Yoga, Gym, Boxing, Pilates, Kickboxing, Private trainer and more. It's mind boggling but more importantly it's wallet emptying.. I was trying to find a place where I could workout whenever I wanted and not have to wait for a machine or make an appointment for a class but also not break the bank. 9Round is not only the best value compared to all the other options, but you can go anytime on any day within their hours (5am - 11pm). There are trainers there to help and guide you during specific times and there are also tv's at every station to show you how to do the workouts. There are 9 stations - and you will spend 3 minutes at each station w/a 30 second break between stations. The trainers are super helpful to show you how to do the workouts correctly, work on your form and even give you a mental push if you need/want it. The best part is you can go as often as you want, and the workouts change daily so you won't get bored of the same routine. It's very clean there and have yet to run into some of "those gym people" who are wearing makeup or cologne and want to be seen. Quick tip - if you want workout with fewer people or without a trainer on site, you can go during hours when they are not available. I usually workout between 1-3pm and it's a much quieter time.

I'm not sure what that has to do with knowing how to use the equipment at the gym that you do in fact work at. The staff is the primary reason I decided to cancel my membership. They are simply bodies in a chair. They won't help, they don't say hello or greet you, they seem like they'd rather be anywhere else. They act like you're interrupting their personal conversation when you need to buy a water or ask literally anything. Cycling classes come and go without wiping the equipment. The cleaning standards here are 7/10. The best selling point here is the pool. It's nice to swim indoors, but there are only 3 lanes. Also, the cycling instructor, (Bernard I believe?) is the reason this gym gets a third star vs 1. Overall, the staff not knowing how equipment works, saying you're SOL when none of their bikes work, and being overall rude and unpleasant really kill the energy here more than I imagined. When I first signed up, I felt like it did not matter if the staff was rude- but here we are. I would rather pay less, knowing i'm going to get sub par service. If I'm going to pay almost $200, I would expect cleanliness and employees who know anything about the gym.

I finally decided to invest in private training sessions at The Study and I am so glad that I did! The Study is situated in a clean, spacious location and is even equipped with a cold tub and sauna! As someone who spent years paying for gym memberships at major health club chains, I am thrilled to have made the switch to The Study, an independently owned and operated studio that focuses on personal, customized training. The trainers helped keep me accountable for my fitness goals and customized a program that accommodated my work schedule. Alexander is a knowledgable and professional instructor who seems truly invested in the progress of his clients. He has a deep understanding of exercise physiology, and is skilled at developing workout plans that maximize results and gradually build in intensity over time. My sessions with him are always challenging yet fun. On top of that, he is pleasant to be around and easy to talk to. I always look forward to my sessions with him and I cannot recommend him enough! The Study also recently expanded their offerings to include electromyostimulation (EMS) workouts, which involve wearing a suit with built-in electrodes that target and stimulate specific muscles while you exercise. I was initially reluctant to try this out, but after completing a session led by Karen, I can say it was a unique and interesting adjunct to conventional strength training. Karen was friendly & enthusiastic and I hope to have more sessions with her in the future. I am very pleased with the progress I have made since starting at The Study. I feel stronger and more confident with each session, and give my unreserved recommendation!

Kaya is attentive, kind, knowledgeable, strong, motivating, and deeply understanding of each person's physical ability. She pushes you to be better and stronger, while always offering modifications when needed. As she often says, "It hurts so good." Jordan, the owner and instructor, is both a wonderful person and an exceptional coach. His classes are fun, engaging, and heavily focused on proper form. Thanks to his encouragement and generosity, I've been able to stay committed to the gym during both the good and the difficult times.
