I sat down for a manicure. I left because the pad where my hands would go was dirty from previous customer/s. I asked if they had a towel and he said no but he could clean it. He proceeded to "clean" it with a dry rag. No cleanser. I said I'm sorry but I'm going somewhere else. It is misleading because it's in a boutique area of town. It is true that it is now called Thumbs up. This experience left me questioning the cleanliness of equipment used. I would rather walk around with ugly nails than have them done in a dirty place. This nail salon is now called Thumbs Up Nails, however, my experience on yesterday was anything but. I had a 10 am pedicure appointment. I arrived and parked a little before 10. I noticed someone parking next to me get out of her car and walk into the nail salon. As I walk in I'm coming right behind another customer. The "greeter" who is working on a manicure asked what services we were getting. I replied pedicure and I have a 10 o'clock appointment, which the time is now 10. We were told to have a seat. It was to me clear that all of nail techs were busy. Here is where my issue started. Less than 10 minutes of waiting, one of the nail techs started running water at two pedicure stations and walked over to the other customer (who didn't have an appointment) and asked her to come over to one of the stations. That customer had enough sense to say that I was first. The "greeter" now says for us both to go to a station. I sit down and noticed that the nail tech started on the other lady and not me the person who has the appointment! After a few minutes I dried my feet and walked out. I decided to go back in to let them know why I was leaving. Without making a scene I stated that I had 10 am appointment and no one has worked on me. I was then told by the "greeter" that my nail tech was finishing up a manicure or polish change. I never requested a particular nail tech and no one ever COMMUNICATED to me that someone would be with me in a minute or whatever. I was the only Black woman in the salon, all of the customers were White women who to no fault of their own, were being catered to! I will never go back to that salon again because I now know that owner and staff caters to a particular group of customers due demographics! I never had any issues with the old owners and staff! I'm only choosing a star because I have to in order to post this review. The rate is zero stars for this salon! read more

Everyone is professional and friendly, and my nail tech spent time to meticulously make sure everything not only looked good, but looked how I wanted it to. I will definitely be back! read more

This nail salon is located in the heart of Avondale. The decor is pretty and not at all dates. Tang and her crew always have matching jackets on which gives a cohesive look and is more welcoming to me. The sounds in the shop are peaceful without overly loud televisions playing. The pedicure chairs are kept up nicely. We call ahead because my mom doesn't wait well. Tang is very good in approximating the time she is available. Hands down, one of the best nail places I've ever been to. It's extremely clean, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, the prices were excellent, and the staff was lovely. I live in Orlando, but I'd drive here to get my nails done. I don't recall my tech's name, just that she was the oldest woman there. She respected my need not to talk and advised I sit back and relax and made sure I had a drink and asked me where I was from since she hadn't seen me before. I have to say the part of the pedicure where the technician massages your legs is always a bit of a bore for me - the tech usually doesn't massage very well and hurries through that part of the pedicure. This woman, however, spent almost 5 full minutes on each leg, and after rinsing off the scrub, draped me with hot towels and then massaged lotion in for another 5 minutes per leg. She was thorough, attentive, did an excellent job with the colors I chose. I felt very cared for. Absolutely worth five stars. read more

I hate making appointments, I hate sitting to get my nails done and I especially hate talking to whoever is doing my nails. This place, however, changed all of that for me. From the first time walking in, I felt at ease and comfortable. It's quiet, small, clean and welcoming. I now make appointments for every two weeks and I actually look forward to it. Had a pedicure and gel manicure today at this little gem of a place in Avondale. It's not a real fancy place, but clean and the ladies working here are so nice. I made an appt, and only waited less than 5 minutes for my chair on a Saturday. Great choice of nail polish colors, OPI and Essie. Pedicure and gel manicure done simultaneously by two different ladies, so I wasn't zombie relaxed, but I loved getting both done in 1 hr and 15 min. Both turned out great! My toes look awesome, and feet feel amazing. My gel manicure, is probably, one of the best I've had. My nails look perfectly thin and polished. Not thick and uneven. Very clean cuticles too. Loved this experience and will definitely be bAck. The only con, is the parking in Avondale, but I did not have a problem finding a spot around 2p on Saturday. 9/5/15: So, I've been back a few times since my original review, and have not been happy. Twice now the OPI gel color bubble bath, turned yellow within days of my manicure. And it was applied too thick! Also, they use the drill every time to get the product off and to file my nails. Now my nails are thin, and brittle. Also, my last pedicure, was a disappointment too. I brought my own, NEW polish, and I left with uneven color, and rough patches, esp on my big toes. Not a smooth shiny color. Even though this place is in my back yard practically, I won't be back. read more

Myself and 2 other customers made appointments and all 3 of us waited an extended amount of time for our appointments. One of which waited 45 mins. There were no technicians available and were not accommodating to customers who called ahead for appointments. When one of us asked if we should come back, they were aloof and the customer service was poor. Very disappointing. read more

This is my favorite spot for a great manicure and pedicure at a fantastic price. I've never been disappointed. I usually get a gel manicure. The place is clean with decent decor, nothing too fancy. If you like massage chairs, they have them. They have a huge selection of both regular and gel polishes. My favorite girl is Amber. You should ask for her. She always does a really great job. Like I said, I've never been disappointed, but she's my favorite. She makes great suggestions if you're not sure what you want. They prefer appointments because they can get pretty busy, however I've never waited more than 5 minutes when I just walked in. Look no further if you're looking for a mani/pedi outing! read more

I was surprised to find this nail salon in the middle of Hotsy Totsy Avondale but here it is. Every chair was full when I walked in at 2 on a Friday afternoon. Every one there was a regular (except little old me that is). Fast, efficient, thorough. The place could use a refresh but my nails looks great so as long as it's hygienic, I'm not going to deduct for that. My tech was very patient because 3 of the OPI gel colors I chose did not look like the sample. She'd brush it on, I hated it, she took it off and we looked for another. Not once did I feel an iota of frustration. My manicure is very nice and I like the color I ended up with. If your nails are strong and healthy, this place is fine. If you need a delicate touch, gels aren't for you. My only complaint is that their focus is not the health of your nail. They do a lot of "sanding" to take off the gel and to put it on. I know that's kind of standard in these kinds of salons. I'm just used to my regular nail tech (Alexa Goodson) who would never do that. That said, it's not 5 stars only because no one (NO ONE) surpasses The Cured Nail. read more

I get a pedicure every 2 weeks, like clockwork. If there is a nail salon from riverside to the beaches, I've more than likely been there at least once. Stylish Nails in Avondale is, without a doubt, my favorite. This salon is friendly, not too big or overcrowded, staffed with friendly AND talented manicurists and is impeccably clean. I am a hairstylist so I'm super OCD about sterilization and pay close attention to when and how tools are sanitized. This place is amazing. Came from out of town and found this hole in the wall and it was well worth it. Went in for a gel mani and pedi and it was all done in under an hour. Unheard of for any of the other nail salons I've been to. The massage of their pedi chairs is also the best one I've experienced. The finished product was very well made. $32 for a regular manicure and pedicure. I mentioned I was in a bit of a hurry and they were able to do my manicure and pedicure at the same time! I still had one acrylic left on (there's always that stubborn one) and they removed it super quickly and it was virtually pain-free - which never happens for me. I was most impressed by my pedicure. She really scrubbed my feet (I've been a runner and dancer my whole life so always get ugly calluses, that most nail salons barely get at) and now they are so smooth! She also did an excellent job removing the dead skin around my nail beds and did some awesome work on an ingrown toenail I had. The manicure was also great - the polish dried quickly and it looks nice and smooth and shiny. A couple of my nails were broken but I explained I wanted to keep the others longer, which may not be a popular opinion since they don't all "match" but she understood what I was saying and stuck to it. Everyone in the salon also spoke great English - there was no language barrier and no awkward "what?" after every sentence, which has been a huge problem at the salons I go to. Although the salon looks a little run down (some visible wear on the massage chairs), it was very clean and they did an awesome job. They have a large selection of polishes and the price really can't be beat! read more

I am so glad I've found this place. I've been here several times at this point and every single time they have really taken care of me and taken their time. They are very diligent with their work and never seem like they're rushing, and I always love how it turns out. They even really take their time when giving your feet/legs massages and really spend time massaging them as opposed to most places where it seems they are over it and rush. This place doesn't rush at all and that's probably my favorite part about them. I also love how they are all perfectionists and really make sure everything looks amazing. Plus, they are friendly and the prices aren't bad. Today, they really went out of their way to help me when I had a hang nail type situation with one of my acrylics. They really took care of me and even gave me bandaids when I was leaving. They also seem to care about the health of my nails and give great advice on how to care for them. They didn't put any paint on the back with the hang nail situation and I appreciate that they were thinking about the health of my nails. just really love this place, the staff, and I will definitely keep going here whenever I need to get my nails and toes done.
