While I get great hair care services here, this review is primarily for Kellie Ball, a decades long experienced nail care specialist. She was able to get me to stop biting nails after 60 years and I have had beautiful nails for 3 years of nail care by Kellie. First, Kellie has great availability because she works long days 5 and 6 days a week. So even though she is super busy with loyal clients like me, she always tries to make time. Second, her nail area is super clean, the hygiene there is superb. Third, the selection of colors and polishes is huge. She is always adding new product. Fourth: her price point is great. I pay $95 for gel manicure AND pedicure (plus a good tip)! She is highly skilled and can provide nail art freehand if you want or you want to change up. I've gotten tropical flowers, hearts, all kinds of fun designs. Fifth: Kellie is super nice, super sweet and super friendly. If you want to chit chat she's great and if you prefer a more quiet nail pampering she's all in. Sixth: she is an independent part of a full service salon so I can get my blowout, lowlights, style and cut, esthetician services, products all in this salon. The salon itself is spacious with a clean, modern vibe. I've been getting hair care here for 10 plus years. But Kellie Ball has changed my life from one of decades of bitten nails to me showing off beautiful fingers and toes and feeling really good about my gift to myself. 'Life is more beautiful when you meet the right hairdresser', read the screen whilst I sat in the waiting room. And they aren't wrong. I almost don't want to write this review to keep this to myself.... but sharing is caring. I have found the most wonderful, talented, kind and awesome hair artist in JoAnn. She knows exactly how to cut curly hair, she provides a calm and relaxing environment, and really takes the time to get to know you and your hair. She dry cut my curls and styled my hair in two braids and a low bun for a ceremony I was attending shortly after my appointment. The salon is unexpectedly large when you walk through; there are plenty of work stations for their team to work at, and their salon services are vast(check their website!) The reception area is clean, stylish and inviting, and there's ample parking outside. I'm already booked in for my next visit - I was previously terrified before meeting JoAnn due to a terrible experience almost 2 years ago of someone butchering my hair. I debated on whether or not to give a one star but I did have a ggood 1st haircut there a couple months ago with Mercedes. Today I went there to pretty much just get a trim. Since my hair wasn't styled I did show a picture for example which as you can see is a quite angled inverted bob which is what I got last time and I just ask that the back be may be a little bit shorter but to keep as much length as possible which should've been maybe half inch at the most cut off from my total length since I didn't get a cut that long ago. For reference my longest point was past my shoulder. My stylist seemed a little bit nervous and was not the most friendly but I was there for a haircut so that didn't bother me too much... after she trimmed the back she had me look to the side and down while she cut the sides when I looked forward and she asked how I liked that length I told her that I asked her to keep the length she said "oh sorry" I am not a confrontational person, (in fact I even tipped $5 which isn't much but I know people make mistakes) and what had happened was done, it's not like she could put my hair back at that point. She essentially gave me a mushroom cut and my hair was now not even chin length, it was just barely below my earlobe. I have never went home and cried about my hair but today I did. before I went home I had an errand to run close by so I sat in the parking lot for a minute just trying to process how and why what happened, happened. So I decided to call and this is probably the biggest reason why besides my hair that I decided to go ahead and leave a review... when I called one girl answered and I asked who the manager was, she told me and I asked if she was available she said yes but I'll have to put you on hold I said that's fine, she pretty much immediately hung up on me. So I called back and asked for the manager and the girl that answered this time was a completely different person and she asked why I need to speak with her which I'm pretty sure is not something that I should've had to disclose but I said oh I was just in there not too long ago and I just wanted to talk to a manager and that's when she said my name and she told me who she was (Kayleigh, my stylist) so I just decided OK well she already knows that I'm calling to talk about her so I'll talk to her about it even though I shouldn't of had to and it was awkward for me I told her that my hair was nothing like what I asked her for and that I have never in my life had someone mess up this much on such a simple cut. At that point she told me that I should have taken care of it at the salon and that she would give me my money back, to which I told her that it wasn't about the money and I had even tipped, it was more about principle and what makes me upset about this experience is that she knew that I was calling after someone more than likely had to have informed her and she obviously knew that I wasn't happy with my haircut so why did she not take it upon herself while I was there to offer the compensation of a haircut while I was there? All in all I'm just really displeased with how things were handled and it's just really unfortunate because now I feel like it will be too awkward for me to come back in there and get a cut with someone else. read more

After being out of the area for 4+ years and finding a reliable hair salon in Blacksburg, VA to take care of my overly particular and picky hair (note I'm not the picky one... my hair is!) I was in desparate need of a haircut in the Hampton Roads area. A good friend of mine recommended Amy Knight at Style by Design. I called and booked an appointment for the next day. Although a bit more pricey than a haircut & shampoo in Blacksburg ($16) I felt the $28 I spent was well worth the attention to detail I received and high satisfaction customer service. Tollie is a godsend with my curly hair!!! If you have curly hair, you must come and see him! The only down side is that he is so popular that usually even with an appointment you end up waiting a little bit longer to be seen. I happily travel there every 2 months to have my hair done. Now, I am trying to convince them to branch out and open a salon in Williamsburg. This place is horrible!!!! They butchered my hair and when I returned to have them fix it, they laughed at me and refused to!! First of all, what kinda of hair salon doesn't monitor their apprentice??! when the apprentices messed up, they would not even fix it. The front desk was so rude unprofessional and down right mean! I was so excited to try this salon, as I had read several good reviews about the place! Upon entering I was not greeted by anyone and actually had to wait nearly 10 minutes for the receptionist to come to the front. The salon was nice and well kept, and the products they carried were some of my favorite! I had an appointment with Amanda for a partial highlight and a cut. My hair is naturally blonde, so I only get baby blonde highlights added to give it some depth. The haircut she did was actually fantastic!! However, the color was completely off! She somehow managed to darken my hair! Because I loved the haircut so much I did not say anything about the color being completely different from the baby blonde I had asked for ( I even showed her a picture!) This was my mistake for not speaking up at the time! I could have lived with the color IF it had not started turning grey and brown on me! People thought I had added grey or silver to my hair! ( several people commented on that!) It was horrible!!! A total mess!!! On top of that, my hair is completely fried and frizzy now! I have not change my products or used anything different on my hair! It is totally ruined!!! I have had to spend a fortune on my hair to try to strip out the disgusting mess that this stylist did! I contacted the salon and they would do nothing but charge me full price to try to repair the mess! First off, she was never going to touch my hair again, and second while I wasn't looking for a free redo I did expect them to at least do something or have some sympathy for the mess. On top of that, I would have thought that the stylist would at least look at my hair or talk to me personally about it! That's called customer service! Instead I only got from the receptionist ....."well, yeah she'll fix it for you for full price" . Very disappointed. Over a week later Hair Dye is still coming out of my hair and coloring my towels. Spoke with the stylist and she said thats normal. I personally know its not normal for my hair. No matter if its colored red, black, or blue. Never have I had this much dye come out and this long. I felt rushed while my hair was getting done.
