I've been going to the Sturbridge Vet Hospital for about 35 years now. Even having moved to Worcester 23 years ago I still continue to use this vet service. The staff there are always friendly and helpful and are a pleasure to work with. The tech who normally trims my Simon's nails is absolutely fantastic!!! (Sorry, I'm so bad with remembering names) Dr Fred is exceptional at what he does and I will always be forever grateful for the care he's shown all of my animals over the years. This place is terrible. Bring your pet elsewhere. 11:00am appointment it's now 11:35am, staff is unorganized, unhelpful, and rude. One vet on, and in case of an emergency with another animal like today make sure to have a whole day empty for the time your going to waste in the parking lot. No updates, every time you call in to the office the staff can't even remember who you are and the name of your pet. All they care about is taking your money, all my dog needed was a prescription for allergies that he's has used in the past. Will drive 30 minutes for better service. read more

As a now recently former client of 15 years, I am extremely disappointed with the marked difference in care, customer service, and higher cost since new ownership. After a recent appointment for my dogs, a concerning issue was brushed off as nothing. I transferred, and paid a new vet again to get a diagnosis and my dog is having expedited surgery. I sent an email of my concerns that was ignored with no response. Glad we left. read more

Very disappointed with this place. I am taking my dog overseas and needed some shots and bloodwork completed. First appointment was turned down, had to reschedule. Made multiple phone calls where I explained over and over again, just to be treated with disregard by the vet technician. Even when I tried to explain everything and the process (when I successfully got approval for my cat already through a different vet) they did not want to listen to me and instead gave a bad attitude and talk down to me. Technician needs to be up to date and do their own research online rather than arguing with customers. Not only am I now having to rush everything due to being a month behind schedule, but have to transfer all our records and had to schedule an appointment with a new vet - one who happily accepted our appointment and their overseas specialist agreed that we are doing everything correctly. Last week, I brought my 4-year-old Standard Goldendoodle in for a minor surgical procedure. The next thing I know, I am getting a call from the veterinarian saying that as they were anesthetizing my dog, she had a seizure and her heart stopped. They tried to revive her unsuccessfully. What a shock! This was supposed to be an easy procedure on a healthy, young dog. I don't know what went wrong, but I am not going back to them in the future. read more

We recently rescued a cat from a shelter and called Sturbridge Veterinary Hospital to get him checked out. The woman on the phone was very nice and it was easy to set up an appointment. When we arrived we had to wait for aprox. 10 minutes, which I didn't think was horrible but our cat was a little stressed out from the wait especially with a dog in the waiting room. The tech who took us into the room was very nice to us and our cat. The vet on the other hand was unpleasant, cold and even a little mean to us. He just seemed like he couldn't stand animals and he spent all of about 3 minutes with us looking at our cat. He gave our kitty a clean bill of health, other than some fleas which were to be expected coming from a shelter. Our bill was $150! Which I thought was outrageous even with the flea medication. When I tried paying with a check they kept rejecting it. I went to the ATM on the way home and confirmed that there was more than enough funds to cover our visit in my account. It was frustrating that I had to put this on my credit card for no reason at all. Fast forward to a few weeks later, our guy was scratching at his ears a lot and we had also noticed rice like stuff near his bum ( ear mites and tape worm). Since we had a bad feeling about our first experience at Sturbridge Veterinary Hospital we made the decision never to go back because we want someone who is compassionate about caring for animals. The second vet confirmed that the first must have missed the ear mites and said that they should have told us what to watch out for with tapeworm. The new vet also spent an hour with us checking out or cat and answering any questions we had. If your looking for a vet, i'd suggest looking anywhere else but Sturbridge Veterinary Hospital. read more

I had to make the extremely difficult decision to put my dog down and scheduled an appointment to do so. Naturally, it was a horrible day for my family and I because we were losing a great friend, so goodbyes were tough and put me behind schedule by about 10 minutes. I get there, they tell me I'm too late and would have to reschedule an already impossible event in our lives. The receptionist insists she called to confirm an even earlier time, making it as if I was even later - this call never came. I refused to re-schedule, ended up doing to another animal clinic down the road. There was no way to have a good experience in this situation, but this hospital somehow managed to make it even worse for all involved. read more

I am new to the whole pet thing. My wife and I recently inherited a Lhasa Apso and knew we should get him a yearly check up. Dr. Mak and the vet clinic were super easy to work with getting them our dogs records from the place he was from. The location is very accesible off of rt.20 in Sturbridge and the atmosphere is very family like. The facility is very clean (not what I would expect knowing the amounts of animals that go through there a day) and it is very professional. Dr. Mak is very thorough with the animal and gave him all his needed shots and tests. My dog has lost a significant amount of weight so we changed his diet again and were told to come back to have him re-weighed in a month. When I came back the receptionists remembered our dog which was really welcoming. I would certainly recommend this place for the care of your animals! read more

If you want an animal check up then no problem, otherwise they struggle to diagnose and provide information. They will test and test until you have spent money and realized they havent done anything. We went to VCA, they diagnosed the issue we had on first visit and were very capable. We now bring our pet to them. We went to Sturbridge 3 times and each time they kept saying lets run another test. VCA was quick to diagnose and treat with a dietary supplement.... Perhaps it was just us, maybe not....Neighbor concurs after we spoke... read more

Doctor Mack and his staff have taken care of my dogs for over 20 years. From the minute you walk in the door you'll know you and your pet are welcome and valued. Every single one of the staff goes out of their way to make sure you are informed as to what the plan is for your pet, and they go over in detail what will happen and what your responsibillties are I've only met Dr. Martin Maketansky and Dr.Jean Frost and they are the two most caring people I have ever met regarding my pets and myself. If Doctor Mack or Doctor Frost don't have the answer they will research the problem until they do. Dr. Mack and Dr. Frost are two of the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. They never stop working even when the clinic is closed. I know the other Vets are there too checking on their patients. This is like an old time clinic that carries on in the tradition of it's founder Dr. Donald Gay who's daughter Karen still works there as the business manager. Karen and every single one of the staff will go out of their way to make your pet AND you comfortable during their stay. The clinic itself is immaculate. In addition, Every year Dr. Mack makes the long bike ride to the Cape for the Pan Mass Race to raise money for cancer research. This is a man that doesn't have to stand up to be recognized because he's already known as one of the most respected men in the community for not only what he does for our pets but for others as well. Your just not going to find a better place to take your pet and find people like Dr Mack, Dr. Frost and Karen who will lead you through every step of the process with loving care with their amazing support team that follow in Dr.Gays footsteps. read more

My husband and I moved to the area last month and reluctantly left our beloved vet hospital (VCA Westborough) to go to one closer to home. We made an appointment at Sturbridge Vet. The receptionists were nice and the hospital itself is also very nice and recently updated. Unfortunately we will not be back. The female veterinarian who met us in the exam room walked in with an annoyed look on her face. She did not introduce herself and did not acknowledge my sweet 6 year old French bulldog who loves meeting new folks. That immediately rubbed me the wrong way, but oh well. She immediately launched in to a 10 minute tirade about how because our dog previously had a tumor (2 years ago and it was removed, we had just adopted him in March 2015 but had his vet records since birth) he was basically going to die. She went on a long scientific rant using medical terms that our clearly beyond the typical client's knowledge and said "it's going to spread then basically all you can do is make him feel comfortable until he dies" - please note that she did not even introduce herself nor did she even examine our dog at that point. We are not necessarily in denial, we know the cancer could come back - it's just her delivery. Who in their right mind greets brand new clients like this?! Learn some "bedside manner" doc! I grabbed his papers and stormed out, in tears. Once I collected myself I did call and asked to speak to the hospital owner. I was connected to the office manager who was nice but didn't apologize for this vet's behavior. At that point we pretty much decided we would never step foot in there again. Moral of the story - if you want to have a warm and friendly vet who makes you feel comfortable while knowing the facts - this isn't the place for you. Save your money and go elsewhere! read more

Been going to Sturbridge Vet for over 13 years. Lots of changes during that time..not all good. Make an appt. - arrive on time -wait in line to check in - wait in reception area for 1/2 hour before vet tech comes out - almost every time. Do they overbook, double book? Some Vets don't remember that you are the client = paying for their services. Lots of chat between staff - receptionists, vet and vet tech. - almost like the client and animal are an afterthought. To the Vet -Talk to me about my animal - not the vet tech. I really don't care to listen to you talk to the vet tech about your personal life and what you did last weekend/last night - concentrate on my animal - talk to me about him - ask me questions about him. He is why I am here - paying your exhorbitant prices. Receptionists' politeness has improved. The really rude ones seem to be gone, or are working a different shift.. To the receptionists - you are there to help me thru the check-in - paying process. I'm trying to do this AND deal with my sick animal. Stand in line to pay - Cost - $49.00 for office visit. - Tufts is $58.00 . What do you think is a better value?? Yearly shots, minor stuff - Sturbridge Vet is Ok if you have the money. . read more
