I have taken many lamps and pendant fixtures for repair. I have had nothing but good experiences. Most of them have been antique with a variety of problems. If you have a lamp that needs repair, I highly recommend Studio Lighten Up. The proprietor is quite skilled and reliable. Be prepared for a minimum charge of $75, plus the cost of parts (which he passes on without inflating them). It's worth it when you know it will be fixed right! Plus today when I told him how my lamp got broken by a guest, he immediately discounted my bill because he said I shouldn't have to pay so much for someone else's mistake. This is a first class, highly skilled shop. He fixed my pendant lamp, a fairly complicated job, for only three quarters of an hour charge. It now works perfectly and saved me an enormous amount of money. Lastly, the shop owner and repair person is not only the most honest person you'll meet, he is also the friendliest. I had a lamp repaired here when it was located in the Design Center. Although my lamp worked afterward, the knob still wiggled and I felt that Lieven had done a half-baked job. Recently I was tracking down an LED version of the bulbs I use in my under-cabinet lighting. The salesman at Summit suggested I try next door, which happened to be Lighten Up's new location. And Lieven had a bulb that might work. He charged me $12 for it, plus a dollar in tax, and very reluctantly agreed to take it back if the bulb didn't fit. But it did. I'd been given the bulb in its original packaging which had slots for four more, and happened to notice that the box of bulbs had originally come from Amazon. Searching on that site, I found the exact same ones, five to a box, for $18.99 total. While I would love to support a local business, I don't feel obligated to pay for such a mark-up. read more

I have an old wrought iron lamp that seemed to have a short in it. I took it to Mr. Van Hulle at Studio Lighten Up to see what the problem was and also if he could put a base on it so it wasn't so "tippy." He told me the problem was that this old lamp couldn't handle a three-way bulb as it would be too hot, and promised to see what he could do about a base. I am very happy with the result. He affixed a lovely black wooden base to the lamp that makes it steady and goes perfectly with the style; looks great. This was a very creative solution, even better than I'd hoped. I would definitely recommend Lighten Up, especially if you have an older lamp that needs some TLC. Also a good selection of lampshades and interesting lamps for sale. read more

We were very impressed with Lieven's knowledge, attention to detail and the exceptionally caring way he handled our project from beginning to end. We recommend him highly. We had a challenging project involving a custom made chandelier, which he had to take to the shop to repair. We were prepared to be without the chandelier for almost a week, but he called the next day and had it completed. He listened to what we needed and was specific in what his shop could do for us. He's been an electrician for 40 years, and has repaired complex electrical problems for us in our home. He told us that he's fixed elevators all the way to pipe organs. Good to be able to trust your valuable pieces and your home with him and his team. We were fortunate to find this unique special shop. Not only is the inside of the shop a pleasant museum-like place to visit, the owner Lieven Van Hulle is even more interesting to talk with. Studio Lighten Up can fully restore any lamp to its original beauty, and they have every type of small and large part needed to get the job done. By lamps, I mean any size, even chandeliers. Just need rewiring? Bring it to Lieven and you won't be disappointed, we weren't. Drive back on this row of studio shops and look for a floor lamp sitting outside with 91 on the shade and head inside for a show. We had two antique lamps that had a faulty hard to find dimmer switch. I had looked at dozens of places for a solution before finding this place. I felt welcomed when I walked inside, and pleased that Lighten Up had the switches in one of the neatly organized parts drawers along the back wall. And the price was reasonable. No reason now that we can't continue to safely enjoy that old lamp full of memories from Aunt Jane. I think there are few places left with this level of care for our important lighting fixtures. read more

Lieven is incredibly creative as well as technical. He can fix or modify lamps, from contemporary to art deco and can turn items like vases and art into lamps. He even fixes hairdryers!
