Indigo at the O2... the O2 Arena... massive difference, certainly in terms of size. This place is teeny tiny by comparison. But after getting over the shock, I was pleasantly surprised. This place ain't bad. I've come here a few times now, both for seated concerts and standing gigs. I definitely prefer it as a venue for gigs - there's a good little bar at the back and plenty of space too throw some shapes. When they put out rows of seating though, they cram in as much as possible... so if you're stuck on the end, like we were, the view ain't great. And twisting my body and craning my neck to see meant that I came away stiff all over. Ouch. But always happy to giggedy-gig here!

I concur with the above! This is a really well done, intimate music venue. This was a one-off show as he's in the middle of recording his new album right now. The gig was, well, probably the best I've ever been too. But this review is of the venue and, that was pretty damn good too. No sticky floors in sight here, just miles of bars making it really easy to get served, and a low stage with sunken floor, all standing, and brilliant acoustics. This is as close as you could come to a 'your front room' feeling in a 1000 capacity venue - well worth braving the 40 minute boat trip!

Even if you don't like jazz, you'll appreciate the Crypt. It's one of my favourite places to go to,…read moreand introduce to others. Deep underneath the gothic St Giles church, whose steeple towers over bustling Camberwell, is JazzLive, every Friday night in the church's crypt. Wooden tables and pews are grouped around a corner stage where jazz bands from around the world perform. The space is like a grotto. Its nooks and crannies are filled with jazz lovers, art students and anyone else lucky enough to have found it. Even the vicar makes occasional appearances, serving drinks with his dog collar on. Get there early and you can sample hearty vegetarian meals from the small on-site kitchen hidden beside the bar at the back. Camberwell Crypt's hand-painted walls and haphazard décor help it retain a homespun feel, and stay true to its historic roots. The fact it was partly funded by a pile of old coins left by a mystery donor just adds to its appeal. This crypt is eerie with its darkened corners, candlelight and an inaccessible occupied tomb lurking behind the bar. Camberwell has no tube station, but the Crypt, one of London's hidden gems, is well worth a visit.

The Crypt, hands down, is probably one of the best jazz clubs in London. While other more famous…read moreplaces seem intent on sullying the good name of jazz, the Crypt offers a good "stripped to basics" experience that I think most would enjoy. Having been set up by a church minister with a strong fondness for Jazz, the Crypt resides in the basement of a church. Of course, the classic smoky jazz-bar element has changed a bit due to the smoking ban, but one can truly cop a feel for that odd "David Lynch" romantic notion of what a jazz club ought to be; dark, dingy, edgy, and with high leveled spirits being sloshed about the place (in a very dignified way of course). Being a jazz geek, I have come to love this place. The tables are intimately gather round the centre stage and the music is usually pretty spot on for the environment (none of the cheesy crap you'll hear at Ronnie Scott's and the likes). Unfortunately for me, I have yet to eat here so I cannot pass judgment on the food (largely vegetarian), but it's there if you fancy it. Even if it's not your bag, I think you'll still manage to enjoy the setting and the atmosphere.

A musical pub. There was much talk of guitars at the bar and someone was soundchecking in the next room. Be aware that they may be charging entry if there is a live show when you happen by. And you can play scrabble or any one of the hundreds of board games strewn around the pub. The owners are a little old couple who look like ghosts (!) and are really lovely to chat too. You can really tell that the pub has been theirs for a long time, and that they are unwilling to ever sell out. Always bustling, and even if it isn't the atmosphere is unique; quirky and a bit spooky. I have been there for band nights, burlesque nights, rowdy nights and quiet nights and it has always been an endearing place to go to. Drink prices are average, and there is a huge selection of beers and ales in keeping with the pub ethics. Really bizarre little place, but one that will stick in your memory and one you will want to return to!
