A response to the owner, I did not present an expired Groupon. I attached screenshots of my Groupon account showing that I purchased the haircut and conditioning service on Oct 19th 2012, redeemed on January 7th 2013, and the expiration date was March 2013. Please STOP LYING ! I did not dye my hair - no highlights, nothing. Only got a conditioning treatment, a cut and a trim of my bangs and my hair was styled. I was ripped off and overcharged. In my original review I wrote that I paid 40 dollars - my bad, I paid 19 dollars for the Groupon. I did not order any extra services. At the checkout the owner/receptionist told me that my Groupon did not cover the cost of the service. He "honored" the groupon (the face value of which was 39 dollars I believe) and said I had to pay 70 dollars on top. Dear ladies, as you can see, the salon is extremely dishonest. I should have read the reviews and never walked in this place! I walked in for a shave on the back of my head and walked out with an EKG chart as the back line of the shave....jagged, uneven, all over the place, up and down across the back of my head. Pablo shaved off twice as much as I asked him to and then never blended the back!! No joke, I could have shaved it better myself and I walked out looking worse than I walked in. When I contacted the owner to get my money back, he was hostile and incredibly rude, accusing me of trying to get a free haircut and when I offered to show him the shave so he could judge for himself - he DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO LOOK at my hair. He told me not to come in and called me a liar. He is a awful human being and I regret supporting his business in any way. He offered to have someone else cut my hair and fix it, but honestly, I am afraid to go back into this horrible place. There is a reason why this place is always empty when I drive by and now I know why! Don't give them your time or your money. Help me make this place go out of business! It's hard to rate a salon when really I'm just rating the one hair dresser I experienced. The rest of the staff, especially Brian at the front desk, seemed great. However, my experience with Pablo was not great. He seems like such a nice guy so I am sorry to write this, but I need to share how much I do Not recommend him to anyone. I first went in with an ombre hair color wanting to go full blonde. I showed him a picture of a total blonde with a few highlights. I walked away the first time with my same very dark base and streaky highlights. It looked trashy and I could count the stripes on my head. I went back in to get it fixed. Brian was very nice and professional on the phone and welcomed me back in. He assured me that there would be oversight when Pablo next did my hair. If there was oversight and guidance the second time, I didn't see it. This time I told Pablo I wanted to be blonde, the highlights were too chunky, and that I wanted less contrast. I walked away with orange roots. From what I've read, he didn't leave the bleach in long enough. My roots are bright orange. As a natural brunette, it is shocking looking. Pablo is great at styling hair and always does beautiful curls. He really is so nice. I hope this is a one off and not everyone's experience with Pablo. What a great experience from start to finish. There is ample free parking behind the bldg. I arrived for my appt and was offered a beverage, opting for Keurig coffee (they have Starbucks Pike!) My stylist Ryan asked when I needed to be back at work to plan for how long I could sit under the dryer for my conditioning treatment. We negotiated how much length to take off my hair. I wanted minimal but she rightfully talked me into a bit more because the ends were really damaged. My wash and conditioning treatment were relaxing. Ryan was gentle removing tangles. She cut carefully and gave me a perfect face frame with a razor. She then blew my hair out, rolling my hair into boar bristle brushes. It took a while and I was skeptical at first, but the results were beautiful. She gave great advice about a good shampoo and leave in conditioner for my active lifestyle, which is usually leaving the house with wet hair that dries wavy. They helped me plan when would be most economical time for a cut and color. They have MUSC discounts and a $25 referral discount. They also have lots of Groupon and Living Social opportunities. There was another client there on a voucher and we were not treated as lesser clients. I made sure to tip really well as I generally do. This salon states on its website that they specialize in curly hair. When I called and made my appointment, I made it clear that I needed someone that specializes in cutting curly hair. My hope was to get a cut to help with the transitional stage of letting my hair grow out longer from being short. He did the opposite. My hair was cut shorter, the style was more towards someone who has straight hair. Basically cut my curls out!!! It's been over a month and I'm still struggling with it. You can't advertise that you're a curly hair expert when it's only 3-days worth of training to be considered. In addition to my experience, I also came in for a root touch up. I've been coloring my hair for 12-years. When he put the color on, he didn't put anything to keep the color from staining my forehead. In my experience, I've had good experiences and bad experiences with it being a little stained. It didn't last long. However, whatever he used to remove the color burned my skin. When I called to inform them, they said it's never happened before. Told them that my skin was itchy and burned. They didn't do/say anything to make the situation right. My forehead was peeling from the burn. They acted as if I was making it up. Salons in Charleston are a dime a dozen. The service was over priced and the outcome was way less than desirable. They are NOT CURLY HAIR EXPERTS. If you have dark hair, I wouldn't recommend getting your colored, unless you want the same outcome. Perhaps that's why they're always hiring? read more

I wish I could give more stars but I really can't. With Groupon there are salons that endeavor to keep their customers for the long term and salons like this that are not accommodating and are just drumming up some business. I was new to Charleston and not knowing about the salons I bought the most expensive groupon they had at the time for a full highlight and cut. I went in and wanted to change the type of service and get ombre color. I know it's a longer process so I was fine paying the price difference. They said they didn't have enough time slated for that kind of the appointment. I responded with, "that's fine I can reschedule". The manager said curtly "We don't reschedule groupons." I once had a salon that gave me an appointment with one of the more experienced stylists because they were so booked with the newer stylists from Groupon. That is how business should be done to keep customers. I understand that I'm just a Groupon customer, but for some women we only get our hair done every 3-4 months and we look forward to our appointment for weeks. I work in hospitality and am a very good tipper and always spread good word when I have a good experience. Some salons are accommodating and care more about giving their customers a special experience, however this one does not seem to care about cultivating those types of customer relationships. As for the actual hair process, it wasn't what I originally wanted but I got over it. The stylist was nice although it's a little scary when someone only a few years out of beauty school says they don't know if doing hair is something they want to do long-term. RUDE when asked to fix service! I have been there several times and most of the time was happy, until one time I was unhappy and when I brought this up, I was immediately made to feel like it was MY FAULT for being unhappy! I was hung up on twice once while I was in tears because I just wanted them to fix their mistakes. Then the phone automatically went to voice mail during business hours. Brian the "manager" is extremely RUDE and not helpful and your stylist will not be able to give you suggestions because "it's not their hair". Wish my hair was not ruined by these people and I wish they cared that they ruined it! Katherine at Stuart Laurence salon is THE best. She takes her time and is amazing at highlights. I have really thick curly hair and she knows how to cut it! Not everyone knows how to cut thick hair at all, especially in Charleston, a lot of blonde straight hair there! Her highlights always last a really long time! Normally I have to get them redone at 7 weeks which is typical with Katherine I can go almost 10! She is also very friendly and easy to work with. Love her! Love the staff here in general. I had a flat out bad experience at this salon a while back. Since a couple of my friends have been and their experiences have been about on par with mine, I feel confident in reviewing them after a one time experience. I went in excited for my haircut. The salon really is nice and the girl at the front was very welcoming. However, that was about where my good experience stopped. The young lady who cut my hair was obviously new being that she was extremely shy and seemed extremely uncomfortable. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to things and I asked for her suggestions on a cut/style, which she could not give me, so I went with the same 'ol thing. No biggie, but come on isn't that a big part of your job description? They do kind of force their marketing down your throat with their posters about you sending your friends and returning incentives everywhere you look. On the other hand, perhaps sitting in silence maybe I just noticed it more than any other typical customer would. She did a decent cut, albeit she didn't really do a whole lot. Now we fast forward to later that day when I realize that I am missing one of my diamond earrings...I call the salon. The girl I speak to is very nice and says that she will keep an eye out, but I can tell in her voice that it is next to hopeless. I call back the next day, because it has been my experience in things like missing items that the message rarely gets relayed. I was spoken to quite rudely. After that call, I tried to get in touch with the manager a couple of times but in vain. I never received a call back either. I know finding a small earring was a long shot, but it did not warrant being rudely excused, especially when it should not have happened in the first place. I have never had anything close to that happen before. Overall, I would say they are overpriced for their services and unprofessional. I met with Amanda at Stuart Lawrence and she was not only great at giving the perfect cut, but my eye brows are perfect. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for not only a hair cut, but a hair style. They do cuts, color, extensions, waxing, and wedding do's from what I gathered from the literature. Oh yeah, and they have fixed prices, so you can call for services and know exactly how much you'll walk out paying - major bonus. I spend a few weeks in Charleston each summer, and I decided to get my highlights done down here for once. I am so happy I did! I saw Amanda at SLS for my highlights and cut, and she was just awesome! First, she listened to me when I told her what I wanted in my highlights (platinum, not gold, not honey - but BLONDE); and when I told her how I wanted it cut, she did it. I know, this sounds so simple, but I can't emphasize how many times my simple direction has been ignored by the colorist/stylist. Second, Amanda is professional but friendly. We chit-chatted the whole time, but it never got too personal or awkward -- as it can when you're sitting in the chair for 3 hours -- it was the perfect conversation! Now that Southwest is flying from DC to Charleston, I may have to visit Amanda more often! read more

I don't think I have ever been spoken to so rudely by someone at a business in my entire life! I went to check out today for my haircut and highlights and was told that the Groupon I purchased (wasn't going to be honored because I had already used one within the same "campaign period." I was very confused and explained that I always check the fine print to make sure that there isn't an exception that would make me ineligible to use it (just for new clients, or something along these lines). I brought up the voucher and read "Limit 1 per person. Limit 1 per visit." I also know from using Living Social and Groupon in the past, that the website will not allow you to purchase more then one voucher if that is what the merchant has indicated. Completely fair and understandable, but since money doesn't grow on trees, I am proud to use coupons or vouchers to save money when I can. He said (with as much condescension and judgment) that their team basically doesn't get paid when someone uses a voucher and then brought up my salon history to tell me how many visits I have made to the salon with a voucher in the last 4 years. I think his words were "we should probably call it quits" or "it's probably time for this to end." It felt nothing short of someone trying to SHAME me (which Michael, when you read this, I am not ashamed as I did nothing dishonest or wrong. Please don't put out offers with Living Social or Groupon without stricter usage parameters if you don't want them to be used as I have). He told me that he would extend the courtesy (as if he shouldn't) of honoring the paid value. Groupon states "The amount paid WILL NEVER EXPIRE and must continue to be honored by the merchant after the promotional value expires." So although he acted as if he was doing me a favor, he is always to honor the paid value. I paid the difference in price between the paid value and the cost of today's visit and went to go look over my Groupon and Living Social accounts. Sure enough, I had purchased a Living Social to be used by May 29, NOT a GROUPON. I called the salon to explain what had happened. Michael proceeded to tell me that since my visit in May was listed in their system as a Groupon redemption visit that he would not refund me the money owed. I offered to show him proof of my purchase from Living Social and he said that just because I bought it doesn't mean that I used it in May. He then suggested that I could have used an alternate email address to purchase the Groupon their system says I used in May or had someone else purchase it for me. I don't know who's voucher was put in for my visit in May, but it definitely wasn't mine! I continued to very politely try and find ways to explain my case and he seemed to just get more exasperated each time I tried to find another solution. This was a difference of $90 - something worth a conversation!!! I was spoken to with such disrespect, was told that I was clearly not listening to him which is why I was calling him by the wrong name (my apologies MichAEL for mistakenly calling you MIKE), and eventually HUNG UP ON!!!! I had my hair done here for 13 years before I moved to New Orleans. Katherine is amazing. I have had all shapes of every pixie to bob haircut their is and Katherine who is excellent with curly hair barely even needed to be told what to do. A few times I brought it pics of what I 'thought' might look good, and she talked me rightfully out of it. What a HORRIBLE experience! Visitors beware. The new owner was incredibly disrespectful to me and my friends were there to witness the whole mess. Not only did my stylist burn my scalp with the curling iron, he left my hair frizzy. Too much time with the round brush and heat on top of the curling iron left me frizzy, burnt and disrespected when I politely voiced my complaints. I had tried to gently ask him to blow dry it with low heat before taking the round brush to my hair. He was holding the hair around the brush for a long time until it created a giant, frizzy curl. And yet this is somehow my fault. The owner/manager escalated the situation with his unapologetic and rude behavior towards me and my friend. He was clearly escalating the situation by his lack of empathy and condescending replies towards all feedback. When I mentioned that my scalp had been burnt the owner refused to look me and instead made a snide facial expression. When I asked if he would reply to this he said "What do you want me to say?" The appointment staff/man is one of the rudest I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. WHen I asked what times Jackie had available (she had done my hair before and done a good job) he told me that I needed to take an appointment on a day where I didn't have work or any other obligations. When I said my life didn't work like that, he became rude and continued about there cancellation policy. When I mentioned that I didn't have a problem with that, but that his attitude was aggressive and offputting he said that NO IT WASN'T he could just see the warning signs and he'd been doing this for 15 years. "Do you want the appointment or not" which I said, no, I think I'll change salons, and he said, "A think thats a great idea" and hung up. Sorry for Jackie, because she would have had a new client, but nobody should have someone like that answering their phones. Horrible. So much so that I can't actually believe that just happened! AWFUL customer service! I went here to get makeup and hair done for my destination wedding in Charleston. We faxed the list of everyone's names in the bridal party including my mom and mother of the groom who wanted to get hair and/or makeup done. We faxed it TWICE since they lost the list the first time. When the mother of the groom arrived she was told she did not have an appointment and they had no time for her. She was with our bridal party and we were spending a lot of money here! Mistakes happen but there was no offer to accomodate her at all. They knew we were from out of town. No offer to help find someone else or another salon or to fit her in and it was THEIR FAULT she wasn' t in the appt book! To top it off, we ended up being done 40 minutes early and one of my bridesmaids who didn't plan on getting her makeup done was able to get it done. Katherine is phenomenal at doing hair so I would give her 10 stars if I could. Ashley did a great job with the makeup too. If Katherine and Ashley were on their own, I would highly recommend it. However, I would have to say I would not recommend this place at all due to their horrendous customer service and management. My mom wrote an email to the manager as well and of course never heard back. Best recommendation is to find a friendly salon that will be organized and make you and your party feel great on your wedding day. read more

I got a keratin treatment but my hair ended up poofy within 3 hours payed $100 and they didn't honor their student rates that were posted as well. I have found that it is often difficult to judge a cut and color until you have lived with it for at least a little while. It's great if you walk out of the salon looking fabulous, but what really matters in my book is how the style wears over time in my normal, air-drying, low-maintenance life. Now that I have lived with the fantastic cut and color that I got from Melissa for a while, I can review it with confidence and honestly give it the highest possible rating. Melissa is not only a blast to talk to, but she listens to what you want and applies her expertise to make it workable. I absolutely love the cut she gave me and if she hadn't also done a color gloss, I would probably talk more about that, but the color is hands down the best color job I have ever gotten. She mixed up a personalized shade for me and completely nailed it. I love absolutely everything about it. No question, I will be back. read more

Butch at SLS is awesome! Not only is he warm and friendly, he is definitely one of the most talented stylists I have seen in the Charleston area. He just gets it.....we talked briefly about what I liked and didn't like about my hair, my hair's tendencies, etc. and for the first time in many, many years, I felt totally confident that my stylist and I were on the same page and had the same goals for my long term and short term looks. Wow. I just called to make an appointment in November for a bridal trial run. The man who answered the phone was completely rude to me. Keep in mind that not only would they be getting my business, but also my bridesmaids, mother of the bride's, mother of the groom's, etc. He was snobby and completely turned me off to their services. Why would I want to spend time at a place on the biggest day of my life when they can't handle booking an appointment without being rude. Listen, Stuart Laurence Salon, you are not the only game in Charleston. I definitely recommend being cautious when booking with them. I am an avid Yelp user but have never written a review, EVER. Pablo at Stuart Laurence was so amazing that I had to write one. I was hesitant since there weren't that many great reviews but my friend recommended going to this salon and so I did - and I'm so happy! I walked in with crazy wavy, thick hair that looked drab and had so many dead ends it was embarrassing. He washed, conditioned, trimmed, layered, dried, thinned, and styled my hair all for $45!! I was absolutely in love with what he did and the look he gave me. At a party later that night, all of my friends and family were fawning over my hair. I've been recommending him left and right. I bought a Groupon for 3 blowouts and the first two were "ok". For the third, I had to cancel the day of due to having a fever and sore throat. I did not want to get the staff sick. I should have gone anyway as they took my third blowout away for not being within the 24 hour window. I understand about having rules but I was doing them a favor. Nonetheless, I was not super impressed anyway and this put me over the top. Oh, I forgot, during my first blowout the guy at the desk interrupted my stylist and said in front of me "you need to wrap this up in 5 minutes as your next appointment is here". What a great experience I had there today! I had an appointment with Katherine and she was great. Very insightful and a natural with highlights. They look so warm and just the right amount of natural. By this i mean you can actually see the highlights you paid for and yet they look super natural! What a great job she did listening to exactly what i wanted, offering some suggestions and insightful feedback and then giving me a wonderful flattering cut that meets all needs I had! Plus, I am very tender-headed and never had to say that to her b/c she did not yank my loooong hair! The Salon itself was clean, well lit, and gentleman at the front desk was polite and chatted easily with me while I waited. Even nicer was the fact that even though I had a "Coupon" that entitled me to a huge discount on the services I received for the cut & gloss treatment. I never felt like I got discounted services. The experience was wonderful and I left with a large smile on my face b/c not only did I have gorgeous hair but I also felt like I now "had a stylist... If you really want or need your appointment at a certain time, don't count on this salon. Special event appointment was booked 8+ weeks in advance and salon called to change appointment time on Monday with event on Saturday! The change in time "was the only option" but no regard was given that the time for appointment fell as the event started. Owner Michael was rude, condescending, and uncooperative at best. I wish this was the first time the salon had tried to change or switch appointments but, third time is enough. I went to Kathryn a few times and she was awesome. It's the snobby male receptionist who is killing this place. If Stuart Laurence was "all that," why do they keep putting themselves up on Groupon? Even for the new stylists...you just don't see other salons (especially Downtown) resorting to these measures to get new business coming in their door. After the horrific experience I had there, I would NEVER tell anyone to spend their money at Stuart Laurence. Sad thing is, I contacted the owner, and wrote Kathryn a very nice note, but telling her how I had been treated up front, and NOBODY bothered to get back to me. So, I don't care how good you are behind the chair, if you don't treat people right, it's going to backfire. If you like to be treated less than human this is your place. From my call to make an appointment to entering as my first visit was unbelievable!! I was appalled at the rudeness from the "person" who greeted me, Brian. He was rude, condesending, arrogant, and could care less that I decided to cancel my appointment. What a sad business to have in downtown Charleston. I rely on reviews and should have taken note to these same comments from others about this salon. The experience surely prompted me to warn others of this treatment. They will not get my business as there are many other salons who truly want new customer business.
