I really had a blast checking out all the decor and elements at this park! It fits right into Solvang's Danish theme! By the way, Solvang translates to "Sunny Field(s)". If you are in downtown, it would be better to drive to this park. It's not in the main touristy area of Solvang. We drove out to the park since it's about 3 miles away. There is free parking, playground, picnic areas, sports fields, walking path, & restrooms. This park is unique! I planned to come see it for myself when I came to Solvang on Jan. 17, 2026. Every aspect from the entrance sign to the playground is filled with Danish decor! I was intrigued with the mosaic clock tower out front and the embedded elements in the walkway. The playground is awesome! You walk through the windmill to the slightly raised decking. I checked out the neat painted wood panels, each with cutouts for your face or body. Photo Op time! There's a castle with towers, slides, tire swings and regular swings, rubber rope to walk across, rock climbing wall, monkey bars, rings, and more! More specific Danish themed items at this park are a Gingerbread House, Puppet Theater and Viking Ship. They're so cool! There's also a Tot Lot for 2-5 year olds and adult supervision is required. The play houses and a wagon for climbing are in this area. It also has spring ride-on animals and 3 baby swings. There's a picnic shelter with a Santa Maria style grill. It's perfect for grilling lots of food for a large group! The restrooms are just beyond this picnic shelter. They are each accessed by their own door. I prefer this style rather than the multi-stall restroom. Whether or not you are a kid, kid at heart, have kids, or have kids with kids... come check it out! I think you'll be happy you did!

Now, we visit Mitchell Park to attend events, take a stroll with our fury love, and/or have a lunch picnic there. There is a great apparatus play area for children. Bathrooms are located adjacent to play area. Picnic tables abound throughout park. The surrounding area can be busy with traffic depending on time of day and which day it is; therefore, parking can be a little tricky at times. There is a very small homeless situation at park. I say small because I was born and raised in a big concrete City and homeless situations are far more greater. In the 14 years we have been visiting park we have NEVER had a problem with the homeless; truly. They tend to disburse, because they too don't want to be bothered with or by us. Don't be afraid to visit or enjoy Mitchell Park. Mitchell Park is located in a central location of some yummy eateries. It's in walking distance to downtown SLO. It's also located in middle of some beautiful vintage homes, so one can also take a stroll throughout neighborhood and enjoy. Amtrak is 3 blocks away. Again, Mitchell Park is quaint and lovely; and, don't shy away.

Homeless people, belongings and trash everywhere. Definitely did not feel safe. Absolutely horrendous. Probably won't be coming back to SLO much anymore.

They also have a gazebo picnic area available for reservations. Due to the homelessness issue in this community, the park has become an attraction for people to stay there full time. As a result, there is constantly trash left by the gazebo and around the grassy areas. Fairly certain that today I spotted a vial from a controlled substance immediately next to the younger kid playground. If you aren't carefully watching your kids, they will pick up trash & worse!

It's one of the best parks in the city and that's confirmed by this being the spot when the city puts on concerts in the park here every summer. Plenty of grassy areas, a favorite of soccer, basketball, football, and baseball teams. Robin Ventura tee-ball field is a nice option too. The two playgrounds are a nice touch: one for the big kids, one for the little tikes. There is a gazebo that has electrical outlets, two restrooms, a very nice basketball court, a tee ball field (Robin Ventura Park), and lots of space to walk and relax. It's also the place for the annual Kite Festival. I'm so glad this is the nearest and nicest park around to me!
