    Swinging bridge
    Sagruilla P.

Unfortunately the bridge closed in April to get worked on. I look forward to coming back when it reopens.

The directions were confusing in the map but once we walked around that area we found it. It is a cute landmark to visit while there. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it as you can walk across it in a matter of seconds and be done. it swings only a little(ideal for me). It is also well maintained. Fun thing to do if you're in town as it's surrounded by other restaurants and cute small town stores

Happened to be in Arroyo Grande with my husband and our little girl dog today, we ended up crossing the swinging bridge. Right in front of this bridge was the Saturday farmers market, which ends at 2:30 pm. After walking through the market, we decided to cross this bridge. It does swing and can sway quite a bit, especially the faster someone is crossing on this bridge. Even though there is a maximum limit of 5 people, right before we were going to cross the bridge, we saw about 10 people walking on it to get to the other side (and yes the bridge held just fine). This bridge was made in 1875 by Newton Short because his land was divided by the Arroyo Grande Creek. However, when he made it, it did not have any railings. Railings were added after 1902. Mr. Short must have had amazing balance because it is kind of crazy to think there weren't any sides since the bridge spans a total length of 171 feet and is suspended 40 feet above the creek. A pretty cool bridge and the only one of its kind in California. Not worth a special trip but if you are in the area, consider checking it out. There is also a nice light trail under the bridge that you can take thereafter.

Quick historic stop [Arroyo Grande CA] During our short travels we always try to maximize our trip by visiting neighboring cities. I found this swinging bridge in the quaint little town of Arroyo Grande. I searched for this landmark in Yelp. It is a little tricky to find. It is located in Centennial Park where we entered through a narrow alley way. We parked our car at the public parking lot and walked not very far towards the bridge. The bridge is green and suspended 40 feet over the Arroyo Grande Creek. The maximum bridge load is 5 people at a time. Mom, hubby and I crossed the bridge all the way across, it does have a sway to it. Of course, the way you walk across too can cause movement like if you ran across or something. We crossed it twice, we had to get back to our car LoL! There were chickens wandering around in the park. In fact, you can hear a rooster's cock-a-doodle-doo in my short video clip. The bridge is 171 feet long and the only one of its kind in California! The bridge had a cool history. It was actually reconstructed when the original was totally destroyed by a severe storm in 1995. Also, the original bridge did not have sides and was later on added. Spent about 15-mins here. It was a fun little piece of history to explore and walk across. That's all. Review #1464

Fun couple minutes for our 3 year old, bouncing back and forth across the bridge. Neat little path next to it. Fall trees were the best part.

You will find the Swinging Bridge near this intersection.

If you happen to be in town, have time to stop, and not much else to do, go see the swinging bridge. The visit takes maybe 15 minutes if you walk over the bridge, come back and watch the chickens for a bit. It surely does swing when you walk across. The most charming thing about the bridge is the little park that surrounds it and wild, exotic chickens that live there. Located in Centennial Park off of Olohan Alley (which is an actual alley behind some shops and Restaurants in Arroyo Grande). There are picnic benches, a gazebo, public restrooms, and free public parking right beside the bridge. The bridge leads across an overgrown ravine and a small stream. The bridge ends by a small schoolhouse museum that is only open limited weekend hours. There is a residential neighborhood across the street from the schoolhouse. **Warning**Although the park seemed charming, there was an aggressive homeless man harassing a man in the public restroom. It seemed that he was either trying to mug someone or he was just mentally deranged. The police were called and the homeless man ran off. Be aware of the surroundings although otherwise it seemed safe there. I gave three stars as this place is cute but isn't a must-see, and simply due to the negative issue mentioned above.

Remember swinging bridges from your childhood? They were like the most exciting thing...walking over something and swinging. Your friend was always a bit reckless and you loved it. Well I am not going to lie and say it was okay. I was very excited to walk across this bridge. I even did it twice. It brought back memories of simple times when fun was found outside. There is a nice little house on the other side. And afterwards check out the charming Village of Arroyo Grande. It has lots of stores and restaurants.

Always a fun stop when visiting the Arroyo Grande Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab. This green swinging bridge crosses the Arroyo Grande Creek with a height of four stories. - The easiest access point to the bridge is through Centennial Park (off Olohan Alley) - Originally built in 1875, it has been improved to meet safety standards. Reportedly severely damaged by a storm in the 1990s, the community raised enough money to bring it back for all to enjoy. - Kids love it.

Guessing that this used to be a one room school house

What a fun side stop on our way north on the 101 freeway. It was so quiet early in the morning around 9:30 while the town was empty. The chickens and roosters are crowing and walking around. The swinging Bridge is so unique and fun to see. There is a walking trail below along the creek which we want to check out on another visit. The Rooster Creek Tavern looks like another stop we need to explore. Such a fun stop.

ABSOLUTELY love visiting this beautiful and memorable sight see-ers delight located right in the heart of the classic village of Arroyo Grande! Beautiful views and historic buildings surround this truly unique and fun bridge! You'll also find a BUNCH of quite social, colorful and "local" roosters strutting around the surrounding grounds as an added bonus for visiting! Lol! Definitely a great place to take a few pics and even dine at one of the MANY fantastic restaurants nearby!

This is a great place for kids and adults alike. We stopped by to check it out on a Friday around 1:45pm. Lots of middle school aged kids hanging out on both sides of bridge. Nobody was rude, or obnoxious. Just present, loitering. The bridge itself is approximately 3-4 stories above the creek below. There was a sign stating no more then 5 adults on the bridge at a time...scary thought but notably important. Anyway, the bridge feels very secure. We parked off of Branch Ave and just enjoyed the cute downtown feel. There are a bunch of roosters that live in the creek bed; and have a shelter near the parking lot. They are not afraid of people. Overall this is a cute lil place to let the kids get some energy out. It won't take but 5 minutes to say u saw & experienced the bridge BUT with kids of course I'd say this spot can be fun for 30-45 minutes.

Very cool spot in Arroyo Grande. The bridge actually does swing when you walk across. There are wild chickens walking around the parking lot and the ravine below the bridge. They can be seen in the trees as well. Definitely something worth seeing when driving through.

There are a plethora of restaurants, a coffee house, an ice-cream shop, pizza places, "vintage" ole school butcher, & baker/ Eclair Shop. There are also a ton of cool antique shops, gift shops, vine tasting shops and more. You can easily spend a good part of the day exploring this unique area & it is far more quaint than either downtown SLO or nearby downtown Pismo. This old restored cool slightly scary swinging bridge is rather unique [a capacity of only 5 people & was originally built by an land owner without any rails!] and leads one to yet another little park [ Heritage Square which has a small children area] on the other end [where there are also sometimes some community events]. There is also a local historical barn museum [ South County Historical Society ] complete with a model T & ~100 year old tractor/printing press & more, on the other side. The bridge overlooks the waters of AG creek and there are paths which hug this quite lazy serene creek. They are rather hazardous, since the fence is composed of fairly rotten wood...so please use caution. There are stairs down to the creek area at least two points [ one is at the little known Kiwanis Park {also with a few picnic tables & a creek view}, which is right next to the cool historic Arroyo Grande Bridge] along this back Olohan Alley. Off peak, you will see alot of colorful semi-wild Roasters. At the center of this small park, is a charming rotunda which sometimes has live music for those in the area for the Farmer's Market. While sometimes you can also find Artwork for sale in this area, it varies as does the vendor selection. There are some steadfast regular local AG, or other farmers, who come here almost every Saturday at Noon, year round. Some do the huge Sat. AM Farmer's Market in SLO @8AM [in Madonna Plaza near the Dollar Tree] first & then come here to sell the rest at noon here. While sometimes you can find baked goods here, you can always find freshly baked Eclairs, cupcakes, bread, and more at Eclair bakery just two blocks away. You can also frequent the amazing 100+ year old AG Butcher shop and either get their signature housemade smoked products/sausages, or get a fresh huge Tri-tip sandwich to eat in one of the nearby parks....like this one. Needless to say, AG village is home to a nice eclectic assortment of restaurants and shops that are so pleasant and enticing. In general, people here are very friendly and the whole place seems almost utopian...except it does cost money. Fortunately, prices are quite fair in general. Centennial Park is one of the many great cool features in AG Village that makes this area one of the local favorites. This park also has a cool history and even contains a time capsule to be opened in the future. The seemly "indigenous" rooster population is somewhat of a mystery. The local newspapers think that these guys have been abandoned here. They usually do not bother anyone and do add some color, mystery, and character to this area. I must have been here a zillion times, but only now I had noticed that I could not find a listing. While this could be redundant, I apologize. Thank you & please enjoy! BTW- On 8AM Wednesdays, there is yet another AG Farmers Market, but it is way down on Grande Ave. in the same Plaza as the Dollar Tree & Smart & Final.

We normally would stop by on the way up to SLO town or Paso Robles. There's a few little shops that I like to frequent for lunch and coffee. It's only a good half mile or so strip which is their downtown area. Cute boutiques, coffee shops, bakery, souvenir shop, a bar and some restaurants. We stopped by on Sunday morning which the town was pretty mellow. I don't think most of the shops are open before noon as it was quiet. Mainly the coffee shops were open while the restaurant was starting to set up. The street is cute in a sense of walking though a make believe town fit for a movie. It's like a movie set. The people are alway friendly and welcoming. I can't figure out if it's more locals or visitors that come through. But it's a cute place for a nice wander and meal. Or some shopping and just enjoying the day. It's not far from SLO town or Pismo just off the 101.

Picture if you will a little town in San Luis Obispo where the community gathered in Centennial Park for special celebrations, a jazz band playing underneath the gazebo and nearby a swinging bridge, walk across the bridge, feel it sway--- you have now crossed over into... THE TWILIGHT... err, I meant a residential neighborhood and a historic schoolhouse. Huh? What? Where?? I know... Arroyo Grande is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California's Central Coast. Arroyo Grande is just south of San Luis Obispo and is surrounded by Grover Beach, Oceano, Shell Beach, and Pismo Beach. Anyway, just kidding about the Twilight Zone bit but we almost missed finding this place. You have to lookout for a small narrow entrance to get to this little area. It is behind Branch Street and City Hall. The park has a nice gazebo surrounded by a grassy area. There are also public restrooms just across the gazebo. We stopped by the Swinging Bridge [separate review] located at Centennial Park, the only bridge of its kind in California. This historical landmark is 171-ft long and is suspended 40-ft above the Arroyo Grande Creek. We were already at SLO and we wanted to check it out. The bridge is open for foot traffic. There is plenty of open space public parking in Centennial Park. We walked towards their main street and explored a little bit. Purchased some pastries at Eclair Bakery [separate review]. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, bakery, along Branch Street. Review #1466
