Don't sleep on Gowanus! It's quickly becoming the new "it" place to be, between the BBQ joints with cult followings, shuffleboard clubs, Whole Foods, and of course, breweries. I'm always welcoming of more beer options, so Strong Rope gets my seal of approval. Swung by on opening night, and it was a full house. The taproom is a decent size, with a few tables against the wall and ample bar seats. Love the wooden bar! They were going full force with their beer offerings, with 8 different taps (6 of them being their own brews, the other 2 from Finback and Rockaway Brewing). I tried everything ($3 tasting glasses go a long way). My favorite Strong Rope offering was the Fat Man, Little Stout. However, other than that, I preferred the Finback and the Rockaway they had on tap. I'm probably spoiled (or jaded) because of how many great breweries there are in Brooklyn now, but I'm struggling to see where Strong Rope fits in. Within walking distance, there's Threes Brewing 3 minutes away and they have rotating food, coffee, cocktails, and an outdoor space. There's Other Half, which is a ways away but has knock-you-on-your-ass ABVs. And there's Pickle Shack, which for all intents and purposes may as well be a de facto Dogfish Head taproom. There doesn't seem to be any points of difference at Strong Rope, but if they opened 5 years ago, I'd be all about it. I'll hold out hope that they'll eventually come into their own since it's opening week, after all. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it. It's a cool place to have a beer. Full stop. They were cash only when I went, but they'll be setting up their credit card system soon. Oh, and they have cool metal growlers. read more

Plus they brew dark beers, score. The atmosphere is welcoming. I feel like I should be spending time with my friends enjoying myself. Not stupid loud music (I like music a lot but when I drink beers I like talking to my hommies). Lots of games to play. Because games are great. Solid brews, no frills brewery. You walk into Strong Rope and you'll notice that it's a chill scene. There are dogs, the servers are interacting with the customers and giving them beer to try. The atmosphere is exactly what you want at a brewery. The space isn't huge, so hopefully you can squeeze into one of their long tables. This was my first brewery, BTW. I know almost nothing about beer, so where's a better place to start than Strong Rope? The woman helping us gave me a few beers to try, very helpful. I wish I could go on about the quality of the beers but again, I know little to nothing about beer. All I can say is that I loved my beer and people around us seemed to love their beers. If I'm back in the area, I will definitely be back. If you like beers, check this place out. read more

It's not a bad place to saunter in during a Park Slope pub-crawl; the choices of viand were diverse and there's no chance of not finding something you'd like to quaff down. Strange interior though: a mixture of ornate wood accents, flagstones(?) and stark white walls. Like someone's dad's basement halfway through a remodeling job. Can feel a little chilly at times. The beer selection here is surprisingly vast considering how small the place is, they'll usually have at least 6 different styles available on draft. The Strong Rope Brewery was pretty bare bones. They had a bar up front, a few long tables on the side, and their tanks in the back. However, aside from some rotating artists' pieces on the walls, the space feels rather drab, which is disappointing since their beers are pretty great. While they did not offer traditional sampling flights, tasting portions of each beer were available (at a steep $5 each) for you to collate your own progression. I was trying to keep it light, so I just had a small tasting glass of the Beautiful World, as seasonal peach ale with an unexpected 6.9% ABV. The medium-bodied beer had an underlying peach essence that was perfect for the unseasonably warm October afternoon. I also had a sip of the Pale Blue Dot, another seasonal offering, but this saison was infused with lavender and blueberries for a floral finish. Both beers were very unique and interesting. Strong Rope might not offer much in terms of atmosphere, but they make up for it with quality brews. read more

We decided to eschew the brewery in the area we knew really well (Threes Brewing) and kill some time at Strong Rope instead before heading over to an event nearby at the Ample Hills location in Gowanus. On an early afternoon on Saturday, the vibe at the taproom was extremely laid-back and chill, with the peacefulness only broken by one dog deciding to bark at a couple of folks who came in a little later. The ceiling are low, the ambiance is cozy, and there are a number of high-top tables and some larger-sized tables to hang out at, along with a small bar as well. Getting a flight of beers is easy, although 5 6-ounce pours was a little more to put away than I had initially anticipated, but it's a great way to try out most of the beers on tap (there are 10 total). Of them all, I definitely appreciated the IPA that was brewed in collaboration with a Berlin-based brewer - good flavor, a little hazy - along with the double IPA (Wolf Blossom) that IMO was far and away the best of the choices. The corn IPA was interesting but a little lacking in body, while the red ale had a nice, fuller body to it, and the blonde ale had a fun name (Pizza Boy Forever) but was on the lighter side - good for the style, but the genre is generally not my cup of tea. The food options are outsourced to nearby spots, so you can get some bites if you are interested. In all, though, this is a nice, lower-key spot to grab some good craft beer, and if you pull out one of the board games on the shelves by the storefront window, it's not a bad place to pass the time. I wouldn't mind coming back to explore some of the different options that roll through, and I do hope that Strong Rope does some further exploration in IPAs, which seem to be their strongest point when it comes to the beer varieties available. read more

How silly of me, thinking I could show up to a brewery during its opening weekend and get a seat; of course not, this is Brooklyn. We flock to new establishments like a bunch of pigeons that also happen to be beer nerds. I could immediately see why there was a nice size crowd on Saturday, day 3 of Strong Rope's (hopefully) very long tenure in Gowanus. It's a warm, unassuming space with a few tables and a beautiful wood bar. There were several groups there so we jockeyed to find a space to stand without being obstructed by a stroller, but once we had a spot we were set. Offering $3 "tasting pours" (a healthy 6oz) is a godsend: we were able to try the full spectrum of brews without stumbling home afterwards. I really enjoyed the stout and brown ale in particular. I also loved the great mix of beers: I love a good IPA but so often those beers take over the tap list at bars. Strong Rope had a great IPA, but so many other varieties as well, so well done. Full size pours are also reasonably priced! So add Strong Rope to the embarrassment of riches we have in the area. Just tell me when you're going, so I can join you. A final note: not sure if they are cash only or not. They said they were, but then they had a fancy iPad cash register that appears to take cards. I'm sure someone has said it already but you kind of have two choices in this part of Gowanus for this kind of microbrew drinking - Three's Brewing, which is impressive and hip, and Strong Rope, which is like comfort food. I like both but there's just something about the makeshift bar and unfinished look that makes you feel like you at a friend's barn estate upstate. There is no pretense or BS. Great to see yet another brewery in the neighborhood. The craft beer renaissance truely is upon us. Strong Rope definitely is putting out some good brews. They are just starting out, but their core offerings appear to be pretty strong. What's also nice is that their system is super, super small, which means that their taplist is constantly rotating. Strong Rope is pretty cool in that it is smack in the middle of a very random, unassuming block. There is little to no decor and not necessarily enough seating space but there were a few bar like areas where you could stand. For a Thursday night (the night before Good Friday) it was surprisingly crowded with parents and their small/infant children. They had an extensive list of brews and were happy to let you taste them or get smaller 3 oz tastes for around $3. The bartender was fairly friendly and its a cool addition to the neighborhood, but nothing to write home about. read more

Stopped in on Saturday around 1PM. There were a few other people in there, but it was relatively quiet. Each person I was with ordered 2-3 of their 6oz tasting beers. I ordered the pale ale & the ipa. I forgot the name of the pale ale, but the ipa was called Forest Juice. Both were good, but I definitely enjoyed the ipa better. My mom got the cider, which I tried and really liked since it was a dry cider. The tasting room itself is super cute inside with a bunch of tables for you to sit and enjoy your beer at. They don't serve food there, but they had a sign on the wall saying you could bring outside food, which is nice! I also really liked that they sourced a lot of their ingredients from different parts of NY state & they had a big map on the wall with thumbtacks in all the areas where they get ingredients. I would come here again if I was in the area or had company from out of town visiting. read more

Strong Rope is a nice addition to the area. I tried nearly all of their beers and enjoyed every one. There isn't any food but you can bring your own and eat at their tables. They allow dogs inside which is a plus. The only downside is that they only have expensive metal growlers ($30 for 1 liter and $35 for 2) so bring your own or be prepared to pay up. The short: Great place, great beer, and great staff. The long: I was looking for a place to host my boyfriend's birthday celebrations without having to shell out too much $$ as half the night would be spent at Kick-Axe (a few blocks away). I saw on the website and yelp reviews that it was a "bring your own food" establishment and quickly emailed with Jess at Strong Rope Brewery who happily assisted in reserving their large back table for me in the evening to bring in some catering for my group before the axe experience. Lots of emails from me so thank you for patiently answering all my questions, Jess. I definitely recommend this as I wasn't asked for ANY money to make this reservation which helped in my party budget. The night of, I arrived a little bit earlier than my reservation and it was PACKED. I had trays of food but we were assisted quickly and the reservation before us was cleared out by the team. They checked on us a few times but definitely didn't hover. The large table in the back had plenty of chairs and I was able to fit all my food and some extra stuff on it. There was also plenty of folding chairs for my group. The bar crowd seemed to be locals and people doing bar crawls - fun environment!
