We stumbled across this place on our way home from Winston-Salem to West Springfield, Va. after a quick Google to find out it was family owned and local. So we went. It's extremely busy, and all the workers (and customers) had a smile on their face, which is always a good sign. I asked whether I should have a Fish Sammy (that's what they call it) or a salad and was told I should have the fish. It was simply the best fish sandwich I have ever eaten. The roll was unbelievable! The fish was perfectly cooked and a thick, moist piece. Great tartar sauce and lettuce and cheese. My partner had turkey and Brie on Focaccia that was also extraordinary. Needless to say, we had to buy some cookies, strudel and pastry to take home. We had already gotten bread from my sister or we would have bought that also. You simply cannot go wrong with any of the baked goods. The strudel was wrapped in waxed paper and a plastic bag. It travelled incredibly well. The town of Oxford is a hidden gem with lots of locally owned businesses, and a hot sauce festival in the fall. This would be the perfect place for a getaway weekend. The next time we drive South to see relatives, we're going to make this a destination stop. We love small businesses that are quality focused, and this is one of the best we've been to. What a gem! Downtown Oxford is so cute and this local spot is so nice! Met a friend for lunch here and it was hopping! There are breakfast options until 10:30 am and then lunch choices, along with a variety of baked goodies and breads. I got the fried bologna sammie with tots. So fresh and the tots are seasoned and yummy. Brought home a tshirt (Comfort Colors!) and some baked goods. Super busy this morning with a queue at the register that stretched almost to the door but the ladies back there seemed to have it under control and it moved well enough. When I got to the front, after standing in front of the pastries counter for a good few minutes, I had changed my mind five times. In the end, it was the chocolate croissant which they helpfully warmed up for me. Self-service coffee was excellent and they had actual mugs in addition to paper cups. Refillable! I found a table and hung out for about an hour trying hard not to drop croissant crumbs into my keyboard! The wifi was a bit slow but the power outlet at the table worked great. We picked up a few pastries and had them with our coffee at nearby Foster Street Coffee: https://www.yelp.com/biz/foster-street-coffee-durham. The pastries were outstanding. Very tasty. Service was great too. I recommend this place. During our visit, Strong Arm had over 20 different kinds of pastries for us to choose from. Examples included Ham & Ricotta Puffs ($8 each), two kinds of Bread Pudding (Sweet $4, Savory $4.50), and Sweet Potato and Black Bean Empanadas ($5.50 each). They also had a good variety of cookies, brownies, cakes, muffins, scones, pies, buns, and quiches for sale. Everything was laid out and labeled to make picking and choosing easy. Behind the counter were tall racks of pans filled with fresh-baked pastries, ready to serve. It looked like they had sold out of a few items by the time we made it to the front of the line around 11am. We picked up a Fruit Danish ($5.50), a Chocolate Chess Tart ($7.00), and a Butter Croissant ($3.75). I was impressed with the quality of each item. Everything was really well-made. The Fruit Danish was incredible. It was sugary, but not too sweet. The cheese center was creamy and luscious. The Danish had yummy blueberries which added a nice pop. The Chocolate Chess Tart was awesome. It had a great crust, and fantastic texture and flavor overall. It was rich and packed with flavor. The Butter Croissant was simple yet special. Delectably flaky on the outside and appetizingly moist on the inside. It hit the spot. It was nice and big too. Durham Farmers' Market is open every Saturday morning and on Wednesday afternoons, mid-April through mid-October. It's located in downtown Durham. You can park for free in the surface lot on Foster St, in between W Seminary Ave and Hunt St. Strong Arm Baking's brick-and-mortar shop is located in downtown Oxford, North Carolina. It's roughly 30 miles up I-85 north from Durham, a 30+ minute drive. This morning I was accidentally given the wrong croissant sandwich. I didn't realize it until I had gotten to work to eat it. I called and they were very apologetic (I wasn't mad, just wanted them to be aware.) They offered to bring me the right sandwich and refund my money, which I am incredibly thankful for. Situated in a very cute building downtown, you'll find a local bakery with tasty baked goods and an extensive menu. There's plenty of seating, and service is fast. I had these spinach feta croissant, which was flaky yet moist and very flavorful. They also have really cute jadeite mugs that are reminiscent of 1960s Fire King mugs. We absolutely loved this spot in downtown Oxford, NC. The baked goods are divine. We split a mini chocolate chess tart that had a flaky crust and melted in your mouth. The selection was huge and ranged from homemade pop tarts to a miso caramel brownie, and it would be worth a trip just to grab a pastry and latte! We tried lunch today. My husband had the ham and butter on a fresh baguette. He loved the texture of the baguette. I had the chicken salad on focaccia with crunchy lettuce. The chicken salad was hearty and the bread was soft and plush, which was a perfect vehicle. They were also pushing out pepperoni pizza made with that thick focaccia which had my mouth watering. I discovered the delicious pastries and bakery items from Strong Arm at the Durham Farmers Market years ago and just discovered their bakery and pizzeria in Oxford, NC. Oxford is a small town with about 8500 residents and the downtown Main Street is very quaint. The Strong Arm bakery lights up the street and it was packed on a Friday night with families and friends. We ordered salads, pizzas and wine at the register and then took our number sign and placed it on an open table. The seating is casual and you can see the baking and preparation in the open kitchen area. Pizza boxes line the walls and you help yourself to water. We had the salads first- the apple crunch with pecan and then the salad with peppers and cheese. They use bib lettuce and light vinaigrettes. For pizza, we sampled the pepperoni and the sausage. The dough is just right (not too think and not too thin, the cheese was tasty and so was the tomato sauce. I loved the subtle spiciness of the pepperoni. The service is great and we had a very enjoyable experience. Next we will have to check out breakfast! read more
