I periodically look through the adoptable pets on the DeKalb Humane Society's website, just because I love seeing all of the animals who are waiting for their forever homes. Today, I came across a picture of a little black kitten named Petosky Stone. Something about that little face immediately caught my attention. Today, I went to the shelter to meet the kitties, and I honestly could not have felt more welcomed. From the moment I walked through the doors, the staff was incredibly friendly, kind, and helpful. You can tell that the people who work here genuinely care about the animals and the families who come in hoping to find their new best friend. And let me tell you... I found mine. The moment I saw Petosky Stone, I knew there was something special about him. He immediately came right up to me and put his little paws through the kitty enclosure. Of course, he was the very first kitten I picked up. As soon as I held him, he started purring, licking me, and making biscuits all over my chest. It was one of those moments where you just KNOW. I went in simply to look at the kittens, and I left with the sweetest little boy who I truly believe was meant to fill a little more love into our home. We renamed him Onyx, and he is already so loved. I also want to mention how incredibly CLEAN the facility is. It was obvious that the animals are well cared for, and the entire shelter felt welcoming and comfortable. Seeing clean spaces, happy animals, and staff who are genuinely attentive makes such a difference when you're visiting a shelter. It gave me so much confidence knowing that these animals are being cared for while they wait for their forever families. And if you're someone who has ever thought, "I'd love to help, but I'm not ready to adopt," there are still SO many ways you can support the DeKalb Humane Society. They have an Amazon Wish List with items the shelter actually needs. If you would like to help the animals, purchasing something from their Wish List is a wonderful way to give back. Every little bit helps provide food, supplies, enrichment, and comfort to the animals waiting for homes. And honestly... you don't even have to adopt to make a difference. Go visit. Go sit with the kittens. Go play with the puppies and dogs. Give them some love. Let them know that someone sees them. Sometimes a little attention, a few cuddles, and some playtime can mean so much to an animal who is waiting for their person. I am so thankful that I came across that picture of Petoskey Stone on the website. I'm thankful for the wonderful staff who made us feel so welcome, and I'm incredibly thankful that today brought Onyx into our lives. If you are looking for a new family member, PLEASE consider visiting the DeKalb Humane Society. There are so many beautiful animals waiting for someone to choose them. And sometimes, you think you're going to the shelter to pick out a kitten... when really, the kitten has already picked you. Thank you, DeKalb Humane Society, for everything you do for these animals. We are so grateful to have found our little Onyx there, and we cannot wait to give him the happy, spoiled life he deserves. Our family feels a little more complete today.

I told a local how I had a good experience here...she…read morewas surprised because she said she had a bad experience, but then said that was with the "dad" of the business so maybe he had retired. There is one female (don't know the name) that always sounds so annoyed when she picks up the phone...like the caller is inconveniencing her...and it made me not want to go back, but Dr Hitzeman was good so I did (mistake!) Second visit Dr Thomas Hitzeman was in surgery, so I got Dr Robert Hargarten. I have never had such an awful, uncompassionate, rude vet experience in all my life! I had a cat with me. Dr Robert Hargarten walked in with 2 big dogs...didn't say who he was or who these dogs were...didn't care if I am scared of dogs (I was attacked by a German shepherd so bad that it sent me to the ER after it tore up and scarred my arm for life)...doesn't care that my cat was now more terrified in that exam room...HOW RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL! I asked for another vet, but he was the only option. He then proceeded TO PULL MY CAT OUT OF THE CRATE BY HER TAIL! Who would do that??? He later grabbed her by the scruff on her neck and jabbed a needle into her. She fell back into the crate, was wobbly, and cowered from me for the first time. I asked what he gave her and he said it was just an antibiotic. I asked why she was acting wobbly and hurt, and he said it stings. I again pressed on that she was now acting really strange and he said the shot wouldn't do that. When I got home, my cat was wobbly, limping, and personality had changed. Well it is 3 days later and I STILL have a limping, hurt cat. I am so sad and angry at myself that I didn't do better homework before coming here. Brought my cat in friendly, sweet, purring, and walking fine, but came back out with a cat that is limping and shows s/s of pain. Please don't make the same mistake I did - go elsewhere!

When, 2 days later, we had to make the decision to have our precious Tedy put down, as difficult as it was ,and still is,( as it was just over 2 weeks ago) the folks there were the most compassionate and caring I have ever experienced, both to our kitty and to us. They are the only place we intend to go with any further pets we have, for sure!
