Very friendly staff. Well stocked shelves. Pleasant atmosphere for browsing. The prices were excellent.

The employees!! And the Groomer employee first what happened with the employees is very despicable just to save the company a few dollars what had happened was I went to purchase a fish tank the accessories as well as the filtration and the fish there was a sale on by fish and fish tank 50% off as I was going to proceed on getting the fish. The employee mentioned I could not get the discount because they will not sell me the fish until the next day because they had to come and test the pH balance in the water before allowing any fish in my fish tank! I explained are you serious? They had no joke on their face and they were absolutely serious. I was a little upset, so yes, I agree that I argue with them for a good five minutes. I even showed up a Google picture explaining that was not true. This employee explained their company required this so I left the facility with only the fish tank and filter with accessories. When I arrived home, I put the water in with the filtration and tested the water to make sure it was all ready for fish. Everything passed the next day after searching for other information about the fish being in my water less than 24 hours which proved they were very incorrect. The ladies were still there and I still had animosity because I couldn't get my sale and they were very immature how they spoke to me. I'm not selling you. I'm at 100% perfect lady, but I know how to treat people with respect being that Chow Hound the only place in town I can get fish for my grandson for his birthday. I continue to get the fish, but I tell you one thing right now I will never! Ever! Purchase or spend one more dime at my cost at this Chow Hound company anywhere in the world and with the Grooming I was very unsatisfied. My dog was noticeably untouched with grooming, clippers her hair was still very damp, and her cause her nails were the exact same to be have gotten overcharged basically doubled what I pay now at this other groomers I should have never wasted my time going to Chow Hound's and I recommend nobody ever goes there unless employment changes hands. Groomers need to be up to par and at least know what they are doing before trying to over charge. I was so correct on this issue. I was called and set a free appointment to have him groomed for free, which still does not help. Pet owners beware. I will only write one star because there is no option for no stars. read more

Wanted to buy a Goldfish but was refused purchase because I have a 50 gallon tank and apparently I need a 55 gallon tank to buy one because the goldfish would "suffocate". Meanwhile there are dozens of dead fish in the tiny tanks. Odds are the Goldfish would live longer with me... read more

We were camping in Angola and after being on the road for a couple of weeks our two dogs really needed a bath. We headed over to Chow Hound because it was the closest place we found (about 25 min away) that had a self dog wash station. Upon arriving we saw a note on the door that said the dog wash station was closed (just our luck!). We decided to go in anyway to see if they could suggest somewhere else to go to get our dogs washed because they obviously would be much more familiar with the area than we were since we were just traveling through. We explained to the young man at the register that we were on an extended trip and we had driven all the way to their store to wash our dogs and asked him if he knew of another place nearby where we could go since their wash station was closed. To which he replied that no he didn't in a very disinterested and unhelpful manner. We went to the back of the store to try to find a treat for our dogs to reward them for being such good puppers when a woman, who seemed to be the manager, emerged from the back. She promptly asked us if she could help us and we explained as we had to the previous employee why we had come to the store and asked her if she could recommend somewhere else to go to wash our dogs. She seemed to genuinely empathize with our situation and told us the station was closed because they didn't have sufficient stock of clean towels but she thought she might have enough to at least accommodate us. Within a couple of minutes she reappeared with four clean towels and she escorted us to their dog wash room. The room was clean and extremely well stocked with brushes, cleaning supplies and several shampoos to choose from. The only thing that it seemed to be lacking was a whitening shampoo (a must since one of our dogs is a Westie and just loooves to roll around in the grass). The situation was easily resolved though as I was able to run out into the store and grab a bottle of whitening shampoo to buy. After washing our dogs we perused the store and picked out some treats for our fur babies. While we shopped two other employees checked in with us to see if we needed anything. We didn't but it was very kind of them to ask. The prices seemed reasonable for the treats. However other items like grooming tools were a little pricey. Overall, this was a nice little pet store. All of the employees we interacted with were great with the exception of the young man we first spoke with and we really appreciated the employee/manager who made such an effort to help us out. read more

Prices are almost triple what they used to be. The staff that used to help out with everything is gone now too. Looks like another big box store destroys the family based store. Will not be going back. read more

Went to to see what kind of fish they had. Found some fish I wanted to add to my established 55gallon freshwater tank. First time in months that I added fish to the tank. I added 4 more fish. Now all of a sudden I have Ich. (Disease that kills your whole tank and very hard to get rid of.) I have roughly $250 of fish in my tank. They are most likely going to die because of this store. This would be the 2nd time I got fish from this store that had Ich which was the reason why I stopped getting fish from them over a year ago but decided to try them out again. Never going to buy fish from them again. read more

I will not shop here again. I went in to buy my dogs food that I have bought for two years now, the guy behind the counter proceeded to tell me how bad the food is and that I should change food today. I told him that I have been feeding this for two years with zero issues and I like how my dog looks on it( it is ppp). He said well they just had a recall and two of our customers dogs are sick at the vet. I know that was a lie because the only food recalled was their prescription line of dog food and they don't carry prescription food. The man was just extremely rude and pushy. I didn't argue and just left and will not be back. I will go anywhere but here. read more

Nice little place, one of the rare pet stores I see that actually care about the animals. I haven't had many issues with the place-- just a bad batch of GloFish infected with ick. Otherwise, the animals here are well-cared for, though I don't know if the conditions of their feeder rodents are amazing. Dozens of mice crammed into one 10-20 gallon tank-- all in the public eye. Not a fan of it, but I understand why they're kept like that. They don't need mansions if they're getting fed off, yknow? Regardless, close quarters is how diseases get passed around: mouse to snake, mouse to human, etc. Otherwise great place with nice staff! read more

My wife and I moved to Garrett from Fort Wayne and was happy to have a local pet store to give our business. I formerly worked at Petsmart so I have great experience with animal care and the management/inventory side of things. We have been nothing but disappointed every time we have shopped at this Chow Hound location. Several bags of dog/cat food we have purchased we have had to return for being expired or having holes in the bag. After we exchanged out the bag with holes, I explained the importance that having holes in the bag could contain bugs from warehouse or transport and shouldn't be sold. The next trip we made to the store weeks later I was shocked to find the exact bag we returned back on the shelf!!! Almost every fish tank has had ich issues and they are still selling these fish to customers without informing them of the illness. They had nursing rats in cages with no water in their bottles. When I informed the supervisor on duty he explained that their pet care attendant quit days ago so I'm not sure if these poor babies and momma has had water since then. The bird habitats are filthy and look as if they hadn't been cleaned in months and the bearded dragons never have food or water access either. The employees never have on a work shirt so it's hard to tell who even works there. After all the bad experiences we will not be going back to Chow Hound and will make the drive to Fort Wayne to buy our supplies from a franchise store, which is dissappointing since we wanted to support local. read more

Chow Hound was a very great and pet oriented place to go! We went there promoting our insulated doghouses and chicken coops! There were very sweet and let us hang out flyer up on their windows! There said they always post missing dogs signs and other flyers to help animals! Great store and owner!! Absolutely an animal store like no other!!! read more

At the auburn location the manager Heather is wonderful, there was also a taller man there who was wonderful to me as well, however some of the other employees are not great at all. I was offered discounts on some bags of dog food and upon picking them out I noticed some bags of food that were past expiration date (some 5+ months passed) I sat a few bags aside (not in the way at all and they were the small 4-6 pound bags) and told an employee and she said they had someone come in and check all the dates and I didn't need to let them know about expired food... she then proceeded to put the product back on the shelf for customers to purchase. I continued to check out and when i got up there the employee (the same one who told me that they have someone who comes in and pulls off expired food) rings me up at full price for every bag and I told her they where discount, she then told me I could only have half of the bags that I picked out, that she had already discussed it with her manager(if this was the case why wouldn't they let me know that when they saw how full my cart was 40 minutes prior to checking out and why ring them all up at full price?) I requested to speak to someone else and she argued with me for a minute, she walked away and then came back to the register and proceeded to discount all of my bags of food. My pack and I appreciate the discounted dog food, however I didn't appreciate the rude staff and will take my business for dog food else where. If you shop here for any consumable items, I highly recommend you check the dates as you don't want to be feeding your dogs products that have expired months ago. read more
