The bathrooms and locker rooms are well-designed and clean, and the co-ed sauna and steam room are a major plus. The filtered water stations are always cold and well-maintained, and the smoothie bar is convenient. The reception staff are always friendly! SweatBox is intense, well-structured, and thoughtfully run. The music and variety keep me coming back. Providing ear plugs and cold eucalyptus towels are the many small touches that go a long way during this high-energy HIIT workout. Coach Gwen and Coach Mike are excellent instructors -- clear, motivating, and attentive to form. There are 3 other class studios and dozens of more fitness classes. I have enjoyed the yoga classes, especially Restorative and Deep Stretch. Chris also runs a great BodyPump class -- strong pacing and consistent energy. Overall, VIDA Ballston combines diverse programming with quality facilities and good service. Yes things break or require maintenance, but the team is constantly communicating this and working to upkeep their facility. Highly recommend!

The trainer I had, I had a free one hour introductory session but he kept acting like he wanted to leave early even though this was my first time at the gym in a while. He kept basically asking "are we done here?" before the hour was up. Also another time I asked if he could quickly show me how to safely use a new machine and he refused saying I had to book a paid session for that. I later got injured on that machine and had a couple of near misses. Also in the steam room it's not obvious where the steam comes out so if you sit in the wrong place you can burn your ankles.

Everything is cleaner, brighter, and much more modern, which makes a huge difference in the overall workout experience. The upgraded equipment is a big highlight, plenty of new machines, well-maintained free weights, and more space so you're not constantly waiting around. The layout is also much more functional now, with designated areas that make it easy to move through your workout without feeling cramped. The staff has been great throughout the transition, friendly, helpful, and clearly invested in making sure members are happy with the changes. You can tell they put a lot of thought into the renovation. If you've been here before, it's definitely worth coming back to check it

Today, I had the unfortunate experience of having to speak to Sarina (or Sabina - couldn't really hear), Victor, and, finally, Ranya (I think there are two here so not sure which one this is) about an issue they refused to resolve. I only like CS4 with certain instructors. At the last minute, they added a sub to the CS4 schedule. I didn't want take class with that sub. They're better for other formats. So, I call to ask to be removed from the class. Apparently, it's a problem. Long story, short: they wouldn't remove me because they still offer the class and I called within the 12 hours. But y'all changed the schedule with less than 12 hours of notice? Like... I continue to be floored by the behaviors and actions of the managers/supervisors here. They're so inconsistent. There was a tornado warning and inclement weather earlier this year and they were like, "well, we're open so if you cancel within 12 hours, you'll be charged." Sighhhh Also, showers haven't been as clean lately and routinely smell like urine.

Runners -- THIS is your place!…read more I joined MAD this summer for a month trial membership and was impressed with the support, technical and individualized coaching, variety of movements, and early results. I was starting marathon training and was initially hesitant about investing in a strength gym with scheduled classes. How could these types of workouts fit into a distance running training plan? MADabolic Arlington showed me. I cannot speak more highly of Julianne and the coaches at MADabolic Arlington. Julianne provided a clear, 20-week training plan that included MAD workouts, speed/hill workouts, long runs, and rest days. Their team helped me build full-body strength, prevent injuries, build mental discipline and resiliency (5:00 static effort, anyone?!), increase aerobic fitness, improve flexibility and range of motion, relieve stress, find value in rest/active recovery days, improve body composition (including bone density), and feel strong. I saw the results. The past few months helped me to run more than 40 minutes faster than last year's marathon time, with my fastest splits of the race in my last 5K. Without injuries. MAD class 3 days per week and running 2-3 days per week. I was a collegiate heptathlete 20 years ago and I am continually amazed what my body and mind are now capable of. I'm back! -- and post-race, I'm making more gains. Whether you are a seasoned runner or athlete, or pursuing formal strength training for the first time, MADabolic Arlington is the right place to invest in yourself and your fitness goals.

You can tell she has a dance background, and it shows in how well she paces the class and how clear her cueing is. She paid close attention to form throughout, which I always appreciate in a pilates class, and her music selection was great too. Looking forward to catching her class again! The location is also a real plus -- right in the Clarendon-Ballston corridor, equidistant from both the Clarendon and Virginia Square metro stops. And the 4pm Sunday time slot is great: it lets you sleep in on the weekend and still get your workout in. Starting the week having already met an exercise goal really helps me set the right tone going into Monday.

In an effort to check out some of the gyms in the NOVA area, I enrolled in a free trial of Class…read morePass and started taking some of the classes at studios I was always curious about. Over the holidays I tried a hot pilates class with friends, so I started giving a few studios a try. Initially, when I saw Mind the Mat offered a HAWT Pilates for Beginners, I was ESTATIC. However upon further review of the HAWT Pilates class offering, the description said the class wasn't really for beginners. So sadly I opted not to enroll in any classes BUT THEN(!!) MTM had the awesome idea to offer a beginner version and I enrolled immediately (at least I think it's fairly new)! When I arrived at the studio there were multiple classes going on and the "lobby" area was full of classgoers coming and going into various classes. The beginner instructor, Erika, called for all newbies to head over to the studio where class was offered - which was great because there was no front desk staff. Once in the room you were immediately embraced with the muggy temperature that hot classes are known for. I put my items into a free cubby and started setting up. This class was completely full so we were all comfortably close. Erika came around and checked us in as we started setting up so that class could begin on time. The class itself was AMAZING. Although lots of classes sometimes say they are beginner friendly, it can be hard to learn the fundamentals. What I loved about beginner HAWT pilates is it really walked up through the different movements and taught us how to breathe correctly and what it means to scoop your belly. I can say with certainty I was doing it all wrong before! Although the class wasn't the most challenging it was EXCELLENT for beginners and is the perfect introduction to pilates. Erika was very friendly and was able to offer corrections to everyone and ensure you were truly learning. I can't say enough positive things about the class and studio! My only "negatives" are that 1. There is no water for purchase so should you forget a bottle you're out of luck and 2. I wish the beginner's class was offered on more days and times. Nonetheless I highly recommend the studio and have had a blast at the classes I have attended! Thanks Erika and MTM!

Super convenient location and friendly staff. However the space in the gym is VERY poorly allocated…read moreand the layout was a bad design from the start. The barbell area set aside for deadlifts and squats was like added as an afterthought - it's in a small, cramped, crowded corner at the back of the free weights area. It's like a tight little nook with all artificial light, and it's very awkward and demotivating waiting your turn in such a tiny space crowded to the max with sweaty bodies and weights. Meanwhile, the outer portion of the gym where the treadmills and cardio machines are is huge by comparison, but at any given time only a few people are using the treadmills with many unused. They could have put more of the barbells and squat equipment there to alleviate the crowing and calustrophobia in the free weights area. There's no breathing room in such a crowded environment! BTW, to be fair, the location in Old Town Alexandria is MUCH bigger and uses their floorspace much better. Even though it's a little farther away from my house, I go their whenever I can. The layout is awesome, you can breathe, and concentrate much better on your workout, instead of fighting crowded bodies and metal equipment everywhere you turn in a tiny little corner of the weight room. As a member of OneLife's all-access plan I'm grateful I can go there too. It's a 5 star location. Overall, not complaining about OneLife as a whole, just the layout of the Crystal Park location which seriously needs to be redesigned.
