Good portion size, solid flavor for the chicken and steak dishes and reasonable pricing.
After many years in the lower part of the FiDi, it was a welcome sight to see this new food cart in the area because everything eventually gets stale. Basically, the Street Cook food cart sells Asian/Chinese fusion food. The menu for the cart is quite simple, with just a few chicken and steak dishes that are served with white rice, brown rice or fries. And best of all, everything is priced at $9-$10, which is sadly considered reasonable in 2019 NYC.
On my 1st try of the cart, I swung by at about 12pm on a Monday. Since it was still early, the cart wasn't insanely busy yet, but there were a few customers ahead of me already. I can only assume though that lines form just like the other surrounding carts during the height of lunchtime. And on top of it, the food is cooked on the spot, so that will add to the wait times too.
The steak entrees all sounded really good and I was tempted to get any one of them, but since it was my 1st time, I went with a "safer" choice with the Chicken Manchurian, which they described as an Indian style Chinese cuisine, taste sweet, sour & mild spicy. When I finally got back to my desk to eat, I noticed that besides the Chicken Manchurian and white rice, there was also a small salad laid out inside the dish. I typically say no to the salads in rice boxes, but this was a welcome addition because it was actually good along with the spicy mayo and white sauce they include. First, I highly recommend mixing in the sauces because they add flavor to the salad and the plain white rice. As for the chicken, it had good flavor and was tender. It reminded me a bit of sweet and sour chicken, but more tender and better tasting. Besides the flavors, the serving size was more than I expected. It was very filling and hit the spot for me.
Street Cook makes for another solid street food addition to the Hanover Square area. Now if they can just work on that name for their cart. read more
