Since I turned off notifications about getting messages from business owners, hopefully I can say my piece without getting pestered. I get it. A $$$ ticket price gives you access to everything. I guess that is what happens when an event gets bigger every year; prices go up like it's freaking Disneyland or something. Hell, at least Disneyland offers military discount. With that said, I have gone to similar events (Ink-n-Iron back in SoCal when it still existed, Hot Rod Rock & Rumble in Colorado, etc.) Where the prices are more competitive. I get more bang for my buck without the crazy inflation (got to see many shows at Ink-n-Iron for cheaper, and Hot Rod Rock & Rumble actually has car races, drag strips, burn-outs etc.) plus military discount! That makes this patriotic pin-up happy. You'd think that with Nellis AFB being in Las Vegas and home of the Air Force Thunderbirds, and then the post-WWII period having that patriotic bent what with Elvis Presley being prior military and seeing Victory-themed Pin-ups everywhere, that there would be at least a military appreciation ticket for VLV like its competitors. Sadly, there is not. Instead, I left VLV feeling the occupation G.I. blues.

If you are an art-lover, collector, enthusiast, supporter, patron or just curious to learn more…read moreabout the art scene in LA, then ForYourArt or FYA is the place to go. ForYourArt is an interdisciplinary producer and meta-curator, creating fresh initiatives through its hybrid model of projects, publishing and media platforms. They cultivate patronage and cultural engagement, i.e.: The Annual LA Art Weekend, a four-day event highlighting a comprehensive assortment of the city's contemporary art, architecture, and design hot spots. Ooh! Wait, it gets better... ForYourArt media provides tightly edited information from the perspective of cultural insiders. Projects produced by ForYourArt focus on promoting cultural philanthropy as they further develop tools for navigating the cultural landscape - a virtual map to the best destinations. FYA keeps readers current with emerging trends, must-see exhibitions and vital resources in Los Angeles and beyond. How cool is that!? Now there's no excuse for us creative refugees from abroad, transplants or art enthused cultural junkies. A LITTLE HISTORY on FYA ForYourArt was started in 2005 by Bettina Korek. After working at LACMA, where she worked for the Prints and Drawings Department to raise acquisitions funds, commissioning editions by artists including Raymond Pettibon, Shepard Fairey and Alexis Smith and producing the IFPDA Print Fair. Upon leaving Bettina joined the board of the Prints and Drawings Council, and continued to support the Department as a volunteer until 200X and led the Print Fair Committee. Bettina then worked in the Development office, launching the museum's first young patrons group, which she co-chaired as a volunteer from 2005-2009. Bettina then transferred to the Marketing and Communications Department. During this time, she launched pARTy, an event to bring the young patrons from LACMA, MOCA, the Music Center and the LA Opera together. Her experience at the nexus of curatorial, development and marketing activities, and the realization that these departments did not often collaborate within the museum led her to found ForYourArt in 2005. While working in the development department, she had started a weekly email highlighting art events in LA, responding to a need voice by potential young LACMA patrons. ForYourArt has evolved organically, acting both as a media entity and cultural producer and as an event production and public relations firm through its consulting division, FYAworld.

oh wow, my level I class with Emily was so, so great. This was my first foray into improv ever and…read moreI did a LOT of research about into which LA-improv scene I should dump my moolah. My boyfriend and several other friends have gone thru UCB and the general review is always that it doesn't really start to pay off until level 4, so why the hell am I spending over $1000 to wait nearly a year to get results?? I chose Miles Workshops because the pay scheme seemed fair and the instructors seem to actually care about every person in the class from day one. I went with Emily because of her rep of not letting students be scared babies, which I am/was. She brings the improv player out of you immediately and calls you on your shit, which is great because if you want to get better bad habits need to get worked out asap. She doesn't follow some formula or dogma, she goes with what's inherently true about improv: it should be fun, easy, and natural. She doesn't try to cultivate some new set of ideals/games/rules for you to have in your mind about the process, she just finds and brings out the talent that is innately within you. For those who have gone thru other schools it must seem different because it is not a class built around structure. And it seems obvious that improv shouldn't be built around structure at all. For me as a beginner (and for non-beginners!), this was the perfect intro because it didn't get me "in my head" about the whole thing. In fact, Emily doesn't allow that. Think about it: anytime you try to learn something new (sports, language, whatever), if you focus on all the rules you tend to fuck up. You have to just go for it. So in Emily's class you just go up and start playing from your gut, and she calls you out if you're not (which I love!). While it's ridiculously hard, it gets one in an honest place from which to go forward with improv. I could go on, but I'll just close by saying *everybody* (especially if you're that player who stands up on stage stressin' and racking your brains about what to do next and blah blah) should take this class!! Emily will rock your world. P.S. You also get to see a built-in comedy show whenever she talks.
