I attended the April 26, 2013 performance of VS Theatre's "Cops and Friends of Cops." By no means…read moream I a theatre expert or aficionado, so my view of things comes from the perspective of an ordinary Joe (or Jane). In short: Cops and Friends of Cops is wondrous in both its production and performance. Without giving the whole story away, the thing that stands out most in "Cops" is the attention to detail throughout the entire production. Everything -- from the music, lighting/staging and dialogue -- is done with good taste and makes it seem as though you're in the scene with the characters. Yes, it's a drama...but there are plenty of moments where you'll be laughing as well. The characters "talk", much the same way you'd talk to a friend at a bar, locker room or in your office/cubicle. And this "talk" is where "Cops" succeeds and others fail -- it's accessible because you could relate to it.

I took my 10-year-old "Little Sister" (we were matched up as sisters by the Big Brother Big Sisters…read moreprogram) to the Faery Trail Theater's interactive production called, "The King of the Faeries Story," in a park in Brentwood, and it was tons of fun for both of us!! We met "Auntie Angelica" (whose real name is Debbie, and who is sooo sweet!) in the park, along with the other little "faery hunters" and their accompanying adults, and Auntie Angelica explained to us that no one knows who the true king of the faeries is, because of a spell put on him years ago (and she explains the back story...). But, she then explains, there's a prophecy that one day, a group of human children will show up in the forest and help the fairies find the king. The children and parents then walk through the forest/park with Auntie Angelica and sing songs that beckon the faeries to come out of hiding, and a handful of beautifully-costumed faeries appear, one by one. They were all wonderful actors with beautiful voices, and the script was very well written--there was plenty of humor for the adults that the kids didn't really get, but made for a more laughter-filled show. My little sister was definitely the oldest/biggest kid there, and I could tell she felt uncomfortable and out of place at first, but by the end of the adventure she was ecstatic, and in the car ride home, she asked me if we could join in another faery hunt in the future! (And I was glad, because I would really like to go to another one too!!) I think believing in magic and fairy tales is of the most wonderful things about being a kid, and I would highly recommend the show for kids up to ages 8-9. For 10- to 12-year-olds, I still say "Go!", but as kids can feel silly taking part in activities that they feel are for younger kids, it would probably be more enjoyable if another kid of the same age were to be able to go too. The theater group puts on several different interactive shows in several locations, from Palos Verdes to Griffith Park, and we will definitely check more of them out. ;)

A Faery Hunt is a FUNNY, engaging "for adults & kids" performance which takes place in a number of…read morevenues throughout Los Angeles parks. The faeries and event coordinators also hold birthday parties and will appear at other events on occasion. Personally I got a kick out of what I saw, from the faeries, who ranged from elegant to punky - to the comical Monty-Python-esque antics during some scenes, good ole' improv comedy between the fairies and their friends & enemies, really lovely costumes that spark the children's imagination. And it's for a good cause, the group is a 501(c)3 (or whatever it is, a non-profit), that raises funds for hospital and school programs - so you not only get to enjoy an entertaining "faery hunt" but you are giving to charity too. During this performance there was on-site face painting and, apparently the group is growing, as I heard several of the people at the check-in exclaiming over how many people showed up at the Griffith park show today - 120! Quite a crowd. Check out the pictures. I thought it was really well put together. Not only is it an unusual, interactive, outdoors & imaginative activity- children come dressed up (though it's not required), it's a modest $10 per child (adults are free), and this includes a "Faery Hunt" through the woods in a number of the Los Angeles parks (Griffith, Corrigancille or O'Melveny). Complete with songs, silliness, dances, everything you'd expect - it was well worth it if you have little ones who will surely become absorbed in the sights & sounds of a faery (or fairy) hunt in the woods. My personal favorite moment was when the half-bird-hald-man-creature and the troll burst into "Have Nagila." You can see when & where the performances will be held on the organizations website. I overheard a woman whose granddaughter came for a visit from Holland. Two years ago she toured Universal, Disney and all the other Hollywood-kids spots... But to this day she still talks about how "Fairies live in California," and reminisces about the show.

Yelp Elite event! I…read morewas fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the Cornerstone Theatre Company ("Cornerstone") through a Yelp Elite event. The theatre has a front entrance/patio area that opens up to the street and a hallway that leads to the back on the left hand side. We had lunch in the back space, which was a decent size. I am not sure if this is where a stage is set and people perform but there were a lot of supplies so it looked like a back storage/practicing space. The space was clean and inviting. We had a tasty lunch catered by Alonti Catering and got to know about Cornerstone, it's upcoming events, and its staff. We did an exercise to get to know one another and supported the theatre by joining a raffle. Thereafter, we were able to hang out in the front patio and do some tile painting. I had just adopted a pitbull from the Van Nuys Animal Shelter so I decided I would paint my new daughter. Overall I had a great experience and am interested in attending one of Cornerstone's plays in the near future. I saw "On Caring For The Beast" through this Theatre company. While there were parts of the play…read morethat honestly went over my head, I'm still really glad I went. It makes me realize how much excellent theatre is in Los Angeles. You just have to look for it. The Rosenthal Theatre where this particular play was performed is also gorgeous, with many sharp angles. I definitely want to come back and see what else Cornerstone Theatre has to offer.

Join Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Daisy in their adventure at the mickey mouse clubhouse. This show also features Handy Manny and his friends, My friends Tiger and Pooh, and The little Einsteins. Its a very cute show that runs for roughly 20-25 minutes. Floor seating only, unless you get lucky to snag a bench around the edges of the room. I recommend you stop by for the little ones, most kids over 10 might lose interest in this show.

The best parts of the show are during the various moments when stuff "rains" from the sky and…read morewatching what happens. The stuff that rains, are the soft crumbly paper leaves that kinda sorta look like gold coins to the preschoolers and kindergarteners (as well as 1st graders, very delightful and amusing to watch their reactions) as well as the colored rectangular strips of paper (like confetti), who all make a mad dashing rush to pick up as much of that stuff as if amassing Easter eggs in a competition, or the equivalent of adults snagging free samples of 85 C baked goods (yea like that will ever happen) as if the rapture were coming.

Bf and I just saw an awesome play in this cute little theater - and we had the BEST time!…read more Meta Theater is very close to two of my beloveds: Sweet Lady Jane and 8oz Burger Bar (hint, hint: dinner, play, dessert!) so we were happy to make this mental note for next time. Parking was a breeze for us in the residential neighborhood, but (another mental note) we noticed that the theater actually has their own little lot on the roof! They have acting classes in this theater, so when you walk in the front door, directions point you upstairs for the production - and a friendly face greets you as you look and walk upwards. We got a great deal on Goldstar Events for tonight's play - called Big Hair - but after we saw it I would have gladly paid full price! Big Hair was a one-woman show put on by this darling and talented actress named Amberlee Colson. This quirky petite blonde wrote and starred in this entire 1.5 hour-ish production - and she was all the audience needed for a GREAT show! There was laughter, music, parodies of the Hollywood "industry", poignant moments, dancing and singing! And to wrap it all up in a sweet little package, each audience member got to take home a little gift on the way out of the show. Oh - and they were also serving FREE WINE on the rooftop before AND after the show! I don't know if I should thank the theater or the production of Big Hair for that nice gesture, so *thank you* to those that made it possible for bf and I to have some red wine before, during, and after the show heehee : ). We definitely got on their mailing list - this is one of those little theaters we'd like to remember, and come back to! Check out Amberlee in Big Hair if you can - it's running July 23rd and 24th still - and it's a super fun evening for all!

I've had 2 UCBTLA classes here, one in the upstairs theater space and one in the downstairs corner…read moreroom. Both experiences were quite excellent. The upstairs theater is just that, theater style seating and a set that's not really on a stage at all, but ground level. The downstairs corner room is always stuffy when class begins, the smell my classmates dubbed locker room odor. Nothing that the AC can't fix, which begs the question, why didn't the previous class use AC?

After the wandering through a couple small art galleries, it was time to see a play at this…read moretheater. LOCATION: This very small 65 seat theater is located directly above the Vioski Furniture store on La Brea. You'll find a small doorway to the left of the store which leads to the theater above. Through the door at the top of the stairs there's a small "bar area" which serves as both the ticket office and refreshment area. We were all gathering in the (lobby?) in front of the bar as well as an adjacent room with a large table, some chairs and a few sofas, through the large doorway across from the bar. Star sighting: Edward James Almos! He was standing there no more than 2-3 feet away from me as we all waited for the "house to open". The theater manager David had the A/C running before the play and during intermission, but turned if off during the performance because it was "too noisy". As such, it got a bit warm and stuffy during the performance. The theater has a rectangle stage with an interesting semi zig-zag seating arrangement on the opposite wall. The production itself, staging, lighting and sound were all well done. As it's a small theater the actor's voices were au natural. The play was called "RX". It's a somewhat humorous (skewed) look at workplace depression, dating and a pharmaceutical company conducting clinical trials for a new drug, code named SP-925 (9 to 5), which specifically targets workplace depression. While there were a few funny bits scattered throughout, my friends and I all agreed the play was "a bit flat" for us.

Honestly, even though the play was not my type, as it was one of those overly absurd plays, I was amused by some scenes and a couple of the characters. The theater space is pretty small and affords a great view of what is going on for just about everyone. Some of the seats though have a bad angle it seems. There is also a space for art just as you enter The Lost Studio. This space has comfy sofas. I must admit I really didn't like the artist featured the night I went. Nevertheless, it's always good to see local art. The staff are very friendly. They serve refreshments and snacks. We had no problem finding free parking as it was the weekend, but this part of town is notorious for parking problems. This is a really, really ridiculously great neighborhood playhouse. With the right play and art it can provide a truly unforgettable experience.
