The LA County Holiday Celebration is organized by our city's Board of Supervisors at Dorothy…read moreChandler Pavilion for 59 years! It was a condition given to Dorothy Chandler upon her desire to build the venue - day for all the Angelenos to enjoy it for free!
And that turned to be a wonderful 3-hour Christmas Eve concert, that is broadcast live on PBS. It's free to the public and they offer free parking as well. We took the Red Line, Civic Center stop is next by.
You just have to get there early, the concert starts at 3 pm sharp, they open the doors at 2:30 promptly and there you go!
The lines are big, but it's very well organized. We stood in line since 1 pm and got to the 4th floor balcony after they let us in. Got decent seats, ready to enjoy the X-mas celebrations put on by multicultural choirs of various ages and music styles and dance troupes from all over LA, various ethnicities that made the show colorful, bright, festive and energetic (latino, filipino, korean, hawaian cultures - among others were well represented). They had 21 acts, no breaks, the show goes on smoothly and fast, lots of caroling in various languages. It's enjoyable to watch and didn't even take a restroom break!
I never knew about this LA traditional concert till recently, when I was looking for a nice activity for Christmas Eve since I had family in town. We all loved the concert, the presenters, the sets, lighting, sound, nice production, they ran a tight ship.
It was nice to check out the beautiful Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, home of the LA Opera and host of the Academy awards for decades before the move to the Dolby Theater.
The organization was nice and smooth, the staff is pleasant, helpful, just bring a snack for the time you're in line, get there early and be patient. We felt taken care of, the event was well organized even if the Music Center is under re-construction. They had nice programs for everyone and if this concert doesn't put you in the holiday spirit, then I don't what will.
Beautiful celebration for our city brought out by wonderful artists and performers, a truly holiday gift. Thanks to everyone involved!
