Not quite ready for dinner, it was time for a beer. Yelp brought me here and it was a nice stop. I found parking on the street in front as I didn't feel comfortable leaving the van on the side street out of sight. Inside, a calm vibe and I found a seat with a power outlet to charge up the phone and sit for a bit to write a Yelp review or two while sipping a couple of beers. We've been fans of Strange Fellows ever since we tried Poppin Jay in 2020. We would frequent the brewery, which offers both inside and outside seating. Recently the menu has been overhauled and if I had a say in it, I would at least put this place on the Michelin guide. The new menu is phenomenal, which very niche Asian inspired items, every choice is a culinary treat. The service remains friendly and welcoming. I love the etiquette guidelines posted in the brewery. This is a solid must Vancouver brewery. I always enjoy the beer here. They also have sausage sticks & pretzels - good staples to assist the imbibing. The beer is great. You can always come back here and know you're going to get more than one or two beer that you like. The aspect I wish would be improved is that of the pint. You don't get an actual pint when you order beer; you get a glass for the same price. More and more breweries are doing this around Vancouver; I don't if it's because they want to get more profit for their beer or if they want to reduce the amount of beer people are consuming. Anyway, a real pint would be appreciated. If your going for a flight, then it doesn't matter, you get the typical amount. Personally, I love the Popinjay West Coast Sour - it's perfectly sour with enough sweetness. I also like their white ipa and the blackmail northwest stout. Whether you're driving or walking around the area, it's definitely hard to miss Strange Fellows, thanks to their large rotating sign right out front. I really like Strange Fellows, I really do. There are plenty of breweries in this area, but I always find myself paying a visit to or recommending SF. They have plenty of space - large long communal tables and high top tables mostly. Makes it great to stand around and socialize. I've tried many of their beers now and have liked most of them, my favourites being their IPA and Farmhouse Saison. I'm usually a big I{A fan, but SF has some delicious sour beers. They are always changing up their tap list as well creating new seasonals and collaborating with other breweries in the city. They also have really cool events that they host like bingo, art shows, and more. They have light snacks - pepperoni sticks, cheesy bread and pretzels. Perfect snacks to pair with a good beer. TL;DR: If you like sour beers and are looking for a fun afternoon/evening out, Strange Fellows is your spot. read more

Love this brewery! I've been a bunch of times and the beer never disappoints. Flavourful and funkified. One of my faves is Krampus! It comes out only around the November and December months. Have to be careful with this one tho as it's strong at 9%. The interior is a great space with full glass windows that show off the brewery space and where the magic happens. I love that they have a little art gallery in the back as well. It's kid friendly and there's always a food truck outside to get your munch on! Highly recommend going here if you want good beer, and friendly people! read more

I'm really liking the craft beer scene in Vancouver. Another hit with this place. Parking is available both in the spots in front of the building (looks like an old warehouse), as well as on Clark. The place definitely has a hipster feel, and it feels good. Nice high ceilings, and plenty of wood furniture. On one end is the merchandise section, and on the other end (where the loading bay once was) is a feel-good art gallery. One can scratch one's head and think deep thoughts while wandering through this room. Excellent atmosphere here - probably one of the best I've seen out of all the craft brew pubs. Special mention. The bartender was quite helpful. I agree with Mark H. in that the menu is a bit tricky to read, especially with the occasionally backwards lettering. ESL people and dyslexics beware. One special mention is that their flights (called "boxes of strange" here) are larger than the competition (which generally use 4oz glasses). I think the glasses are 6oz instead of 4oz. As a result, my friend and I ended up with much more beer than we expected. However, this kind of problem is easily solved, with the help of one's liver. Once this is factored in, the pricing is actually in line with nearby P49, my craft beer benchmark. As of the time of writing, they only sell 7 types of beer here, so 2 boxes of strange can clear out the menu. Beautiful. On the back of the label cards (where they write down which beers you're having), are some etiquette tips, or words of wisdom. More fodder for thinking deep thoughts. On the merchandise end, they sell growlers, shirts, and other goodies. I didn't have a chance to take a good look, but it looks very well stocked. Lots of breweries in this area, but Strange Fellows stands out with its tasteful variety of brews. New collaborations/ limited runs on a regular basis. Large and spacious seating area. Run of the mill hipster brew pub design. You get a big glass wall to view some of the factory floor and vats. I recommend the Saison and IPA varieties for beer. After Kishimoto my dining buddy and I went for a walk and detoured here aftetr -- no lie -- seeing one of the Strange Fellows Brewery cars. My friend was thinking of a beer, and voila! the car appears and we figured it might be going to a brewery nearby. I'm not a drinker, so take that into account when I review the strange eats here. They offer a Caramelized Cheese Bread that's really more cheese than bread. The veggie one has token veggie (one shrivelled stick of asparagus you can't even taste). My friend and her beer agree the saltiness helps with the beer. For me, this was two parts -- cheese cracker and token bread. Cheese part was salty salty salty. Bread was a sort of croissant? Puff pasty? Anyway, really light and flaky. Don't try to tear chunks off. Trim the cheese around it then pick it up and eat it. Sweet chili sauce here made it edible. For $5.25 this is more of a pricey novelty and to have some cheese crackers. Don't buy a couple hoping it'll add up to a burger. Nice space, friendly staff, eye-straining menu behind the counter on the wall. Small art gallery inside at the back! read more

Strange-ly appealing addition to the craft beer revolution in Vancouver. Fresh from Hawaii, I was craving some solid local brews. Browsing on Untapped, I noticed this new brewery that just officially opened today. Located in what likely was an auto body shop on Clark Drive, the interior design is minimalistic and slick. The beer menu consists of printing press block letters. Although it doubles as a sobriety test, it is quite hard to read. We had flights on all their beers available and walked away with growler fills of the Lager and Pale Ale. Every one of the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Their growlers and mini growlers are unique as they are shorter and fatter. Definitely adding to the growler collection. Welcome Fellows! read more

We stumbled upon this place while driving down Clark on our way back into downtown. I didn't even know what it was but the industrial looking front and unorthodox slanted signage caught my eye so I immediately busted a u-turn and had to check out what this place was (my thoughts were either a cocktail lounge or brewery). Parked and realized it was a brewery. Woot! After walking in, I noticed they had a decent selection of sours (which I'm a sucker for). We went ahead and ordered a flight. The staff were super friendly and even gave recommendations on what to hit up in terms of local distilleries. It was over 2 years since I've last visited Van and I can't recall so many craft brew spots being around. Cheers to some tasty BC brews! The place is quite spacious and plenty of seating for groups! Despite being in an industrial area, the inside was well thought out that you wouldn't even think you're hanging around a place off a busy street. Kudos to the awesome feng shui in here! What better way to spend part of the last day of 2014 than tasting some delicious new beers at the newest addition to Vancouver's explosively incredible craft beer scene? The decor is chic, clean, minimal, and modern. There's an art space in the back with some great work, and it really adds a warmth to the industrial quality of the room. I love that you can see folks working in the brewery through the giant glass wall all down one side of the room - such a neat thing to see! We stopped by late afternoon on New Year's Eve and although the location is on Clark and therefore harder to get to walking (make sure you find a crosswalk, this is not a road to dash across!) it was BUSY! Luckily some people had left just before we arrived and we managed to snag a table, but there were lots of people milling around, and when we left a woman was definitely waiting to swoop in and grab our spot - it's so awesome to see how passionate folks are about craft beer in Vancouver! It warms my heart! We chatted to one of the people behind the bar for a couple of minutes to get some recommendations and ended up ordering two flights so we could taste everything. We both loved the Lager and the West Coast Pale Ale so filled our growlers with those! The prices for tasters and growler fills were very reasonable, and their growler labelling station is awesome! We had a lot of fun with the stamps, and even mixed and matched a bit! We're both really looking forward to seeing what else they come up with, and I know I'll be back very soon! read more

This was our first visit to Strange Fellows and it definitely will become a regular stop on our Vancouver brew stops! The space is post-industrial with high ceilings and a factory vibe. Along one wall are shelves of growlers collected from various other breweries (I noticed several Bellingham faves up there but didn't see Wander so since we happened to have one of their growlers in the car we swapped it with Strange Fellows for one of their growlers to keep). Beer-wise I enjoyed their porter and their dark IPA, and the hubby enjoyed their unfiltered IPA. They also have snacks to buy, including those ridiculously addictive melted cheese bacon croissant things which are ubiquitous at area breweries and rightly so! Parking is not great and the street is pretty busy - but these are small prices to pay for a new spot to enjoy great beer in YVR! read more

I was hesitant about coming here because it had so many mixed reviews,especially about how rude the staff can be to the customers. Walked in and was greeted right away by a very friendly female server. There were eight beers on tap and so my fiancé and I decided to get two flights of four beers each in prefer to try all of them. We walked over to a high top and. Priced we were two out of four people in the whole place. This is most likely because we came in on a weekday. The place was dimly lit with a modern industrial feel to it. And towards the back there is a small art gallery. The flights were given to us with pieces of card stock where the server wrote the names of the beers for us. In the other side of it were "etiquette of a strange fellow" with three different rules on them. My favorites were Hop Devil and Talisman. The only one I would not order again was the last one we tried which was a sour beer. I had never tried a sour beer before. It was my first and last time. This is probably one of the best interiors of all the breweries I've been to. They are also dog friendly! (For now). This place also has probably THE BEST service- the door/bartender guy was so friendly and cute to boot! Lighter beers here are meh. Great to have yet another East Van craft brewery and tasting room. Friends had told us about Strange Fellows and we included it as the 2nd stop of a craft brewery tasting tour. The tasting room is very unique with its collection of masks. It is clean, modern with plenty of natural light. The staff are very attentive, pleasant and happy to pass on their knowledge of their beers. Strange Fellows advised they celebrate the Strange - people, traditions and ways of life from around the world. The beers are not all that strange (except perhaps the names) and fit right in with the Vancouver craft beer scene. Being an IPA fan, I ordered the Nocturnum Dark IPA (6.5% and 65 IBU). Nice easy to drink middle of the road IPA. We would be happy to return to Strange Fellows. read more

Strange Fellows is already clearly the real deal. Recently opened, it already has a solid line up of beers. Of the six brews available on tap, I partook in five of them (I sat out the stout). I sampled them first in flight form or as they call it, a "box of strange". 1) Jaune Fizzé (Helles style lager): A light, standard tasting lager. It was a very nice, all-around basic beverage that's clean and crisp. 2) Talisman (west coast pale): This was the easiest drinking of the bunch with a robust, almost fruity flavour and hop to it. I chose this for my growler fill for its refreshment. 3) Nocturnum (dark India pale ale): The IPA had a deep, rich taste full of interesting bits, but I can see an acquired taste feel to it. I need a second taste to see if its complexity jives with my tastes. 4) Jongleur (Belgian style wit): My highlight and initial standout pick of the bunch. I really dug the cloudy and full tasting wheat beer and all the flavourful hints. 5) Bière de Guarde (a French style saison): Sharp and biting, this French saison was full of great flavours and full-bodied. Very French tasting. I'm already plotting return visits to drink more of Strange Fellows' well-brewed, sophisticated concoctions as they're off to a very promising start. read more

When I saw the event for craft beer week hosted here for sour beers I bought tickets immediately. Glad I did, it was a smaller seminar and it was such a great experience! What a treat to hear from the two brew masters here, and learn the history around sours and taste some fabulous beer. I have had many of their brews bought from the liquor store, but this was my first brewery visit here. Lovely space, great branding and design. I agree with another reviewer who said this is one the best interiors of the breweries. Beautiful! read more

SMILE!!!!! While we all enjoyed the awesome beer this place has to offer, NOT ONE STAFF MEMBER SMILED. A small group of us tried this place out last Sunday, and unfortunately the poor service left more of an impression than the Beer. There were 3 or 4 women on staff, all of whom didn't feel the need to smile or be polite with the anyone. The table beside us even took note of this. They truly made it feel like customer's were inconveniencing them when they ordered and looked bitter at life in general. Great customer service is free and essential in a city with many options for breweries. While I agree with most when I say the beer is incredible; I will not be spending my money in a place where the staff simply don't care to try. Pick it up guys.... SMILES ARE FREE! read more

YES! Another excellent Vancouver brewery and tap room. We're becoming spoiled for choice. As with many of the other top-notch East-Van Vancouver breweries both beer and venue are excellent. Strange Fellows has a great selections of brews (combined with appropriately odd names, labels, and backward spelling on the board) with the Pale Ale, Dark IPA, and Saison all fantastic. There's also a great selection of, my personal craft beer accompaniment, cured meat sticks. Without a doubt the best brewery in Vancouver, hands down! From start to finish, Strangefellows strikes the right cord for every element of their beer experience. Their tasting room is well laid out with ample room even on a busy night. It's got a great vibe with music being played in the background so as to not overpower the environment. The tables and stools are exactly what you'd expect from this quasi industrial area of town. They even have artists work that rotates through a small gallery in the back in case you're stuck for conversation. Their beer selection is unrivaled! With 7-10 beers rotating through just long enough to not leave you feeling left out or bored, they always seem to know how to strike a fine balance. The array of beers is always from light to dark, well represented no matter what time of year you go. More dark in winter, more light in summer, but they will still surprise you with what you'd typically expect as seasonal beer. I'm not an IPA or Stout fan but their beers made me realize that a beer doesn't need to overwhelm in any flavour. It's the subtlety in each style that's key, so you can feel comfortable in any choice that you won't be stuck with a dud. I became a member of their beer club called the "Fellowship." If you're a beer lover this is for you! They've exceeded our expectations in doing so and what they are providing! After purchasing my fellowship, I had a small issue with the package that comes with it. Upon contacting the brewery I was treated with the utmost respect while Aaron wanted to make my experience right. In doing so, he went above and beyond and set an example for the industry of how to handle customer service! When planning your next brewery trip you should include a stop or a night out at Strangefellows! Fun joint to make a destination. Can't wait to be able to get there on bike. As soon as they get some bike racks. Solid selection of beers. Really enjoyed the brown ale - one of the best in town, very smooth and drinkable. The others were solid and the weakest was the stout. Props for taking risks however; it paired ok with the food we brought in from outside but on its own its palate and finish is too acidic and yeasty for me. Decor is cool. I like the darker ambience but because of that, the menu is unreadable. Not to mention it was put up by a dyslexic. Merch is also very cool. Bought a tee as a gift and it went over well. A few suggestions to make this a even better destination if this hasn't already been done: 1. Make the menu legible. One flipped letter is creative. The whole word flipped is just being weird. Put some light on it too. 2. Put out a bike rack or two. People will still ride in the rain if they want to drink. 3. Put up coat and purse hooks. If you have backless stools, you need hooks. This beer is good, great, excellent. Dark IPA? Saison? Yes please. Also, their tasting bats come in little boxes and it's adorable. The space is lovely and pretty typical decor - you know, that hipstery wood and metal combo. There is a lot of seating, so you can usually find a spot even if it's squeezed in at the counter. Their growler display/set up is pretty gorgeous and makes me wanted to buy A LOT of beer to go.... it's a nice touch. Ample bike parking and it looks like art. The parking is limited but you shouldn't be driving anyway. They also carry the infamous cheese buns, which I really should have started with because it's all that matters to me. read more

This is a toughie. I had the "box of strange" tasters flight, with the Hansel, Gretel, Wit, and Pale Ale, and I found the beer at Strange Fellows to be somewhat akin to a solid 70's prog rock album. There is a coherent theme running throughout, and a thoughtful and clearly deliberate consistency is maintained across all of the offerings. Unfortunately, this particular prog rock album was by a band that I apparently hate. From first to last, while each beer has its own character, and you can tell it's from the same place, with the same creative energy behind it. There was no beer that didn't "fit" with the others. However, none of the beers were to my taste. At all. I couldn't drink them fast enough to get out of there and find something else somewhere else. That said, I didn't dislike the beers the way I dislike a lot of the Parallel 49 beers, where they seem the be either overly thin, very sacharine, or just plain blah; I just don't like overly hoppy or sour beers. The Strange Fellows beer is substantial and full-bodied, and should appeal a great deal to people who like sour beers, and very hoppy PAs/IPAs. That's not me, though. So I dunno... 1 star for personal appeal, 5 stars for execution of a well-conceived and nicely articulated beer catalogue (that I happen not to like at all), which evens out to three stars-ish. read more

Finally had a chance to check out the tasting room after being exposed to their beer in various restaurants and boy was I happy that I did. I had no idea that they made such terrific sour beers. First of all the room is open and modern. I don't think I would walk in and be too concerned about getting a seat as there is more seating than most of the breweries in the city and the turn around is reasonable. They also have a space featuring local art! Many of the breweries are now offering snacks and Strange Fellows also does (I.e. Cheese bread, pepperoni sticks, pretzels and lunch boards) to keep you full as you drink. Today I tried the alligator wit, the Ivanka the tart, the Penelope tart as well as the goldilocs (their 9% strong beer). They were all terrific though the Penelope was my favourite (passion fruit sour). The goldilocs was smooth but had a strong hit at the end as well. I took a growler of the Penelope home! My partner also tried the dark IPA and the stout. I quite liked the IPA. Great place to stop in if you're doing the tour on this end of town! read more

Strange Fellows Brewing is one of the many new breweries opening up in Vancouver and luckily like the rest is not only a great space but a great brewery! With a brewmaster like Iain Hill you should not be surprised though as he is one of the most experienced ones in Vancouver. The tasting lounge and art Gallery have a ton of natural light from the huge bank of windows along the entire front of the brewery. The entire place is done in a great wood finish that really screams BC. The masks hung above the bar all pertain to a different beer they produce and a strange days event during the year. The beer on tap is great with a lager, wit, pale ale, black IPA and Russian imperial stout to name a few of their beers. The brewery is big already but there is a ton of space for expansion so these guys will be making their way into your fridge sooner than later you just may not know it yet. On first impressions I couldn't help but like this place. The interior and tap room is both sleek and bright. The front windows of the place really do give it a welcoming vibe, and for those with a designated driver there is parking out front. The branding is pretty also on point. From the slanted exterior logo sign out front to the various interestingly designed t-shirts and assorted swag for sale, to the little "Etiquette of a Strange Fellow" cards they list your flight samples on the back with... I like their marketing and packaging, and was happy to find out that the beer wasn't bad either! I would say that they focused on making drinkable but not over the top styling to their beers. This works both as a plus and a minus. On the good side, everything seemed well developed as their were no disappointments in our various flights. On the flipside though, some things felt admittedly toned back. The Farmhouse Saison was lacking that bold farmhouse funk I hoped for, and the Sour Grisette was surprisingly smooth drinking for its style which also left me a bit underwhelmed (although to that point, most west coast made saisons and sours I had during my trip were pretty plain by my standards). Even the Belgian Wit was smooth but non-descript. So all of these beers went down smooth and without offensive flavours, but I couldn't help but feel they could be a bit more bold, or "Strange" if you will. However they did have a couple of standouts, which were the ones that did get a little more freaky in their flavours. The Jolly Rancher IPA scared me off at first by its name, but actually ended up being my favourite of the bunch. It was juicy and fruity like a proper east coast IPA, which even made me appreciate the Dark IPA even more as well for its warming dark malts and contrasting flavours. The thought of oysters in beer is a bit frightening, but even the Black Sea Oyster Stout had an extreme caliber but overall smoothness. In the end, I'm very happy to have visited this place and hope to see them continue to succeed, while also perhaps being willing to push the boldness a bit further as they go. read more

Been meaning to come out here for awhile now. My review is only for their beer and growler fill, I didn't sit down to drink. I've had their beers before at various locations, but never made it out to the brewery before since it's a bit out of the way, and I got comfortable with my usual haunts of 33 Acres and Brassneck. But it just so happened that all the other locations were super busy, and it was a nice day out so I biked all the way to the Clark street brewery to check it out. Luckily the growler fill station was not super busy and I grabbed a fill quickly. I've only tried the IPA offerings here, and I really really enjoy Cyclhops.
