    Working hard

It's Midsummer not much open so this was it. Almost didn't get in due to security guard saying it was an hour and half wait! He pointed to a group of ladies and said the restaurant was full. It was a group of four ladies. Wow! I thought no way. So I told him we would wait. He was shocked but then let us in. Once I spoke to the head waiter he said 15-20 minute wait. 2 Burgers, and a lobster tail appetizer $80.00!! We drank water thank God. Ouch! Not worth it people. I don't mind paying top dollar if it's quality. The food was so so. This area is the Beverly Hills of Stockholm. We found this out the hard way. If you go out a bit, prices drop dramatically. Old Town is pricey too. I guess that's to be expected in touristy areas.

Dined at Strandvagen on a quiet Sunday evening. It was one of my favorite dinners during my vacation. Sunday nights the place hosts bands and this added to the enjoyment to our meal. Food & drink - 5 stars. I've never had ceviche served this way. The sauce mixed with the ceviche was surprisingly not creamy with a touch of spice that added to the overall flavor - excellent. For dinner I had the chicken. It was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the ham dish and it was full of flavor, cooked properly. Loved it. For dessert we ordered the Oreo cheesecake. The dessert was a little bit different than what I expected from an American perspective of cheesecake but nonetheless delicious. The chocolate terrine was super rich and dense. We didn't have any cocktails but the wine selection was nice. Service - 5 stars - our waitress was so kind and made recommendations and was patient with us and our questions. This is a can't miss place for dining in Stockholm.

Chanterelles fried in butter w/ bleak roe, goat cheese & pickled onion (245 SEK)

Strandvägen 1, located next to Dramaten, is a restaurant with an luxurios atmosphere that works just as well as in the morning, during lunch or for dinner. You can order from their breakfast menu throughout the whole day if you're craving for eggs benedict or an smoked salmon omelet for instance. I've seen a wide range of reviews of this place, which seems to be the HQ of Stockholm's fashionistas, in the past and was quite sceptic on beforehand, but fortunately I was pleasantly suprised. Maybe it was due to my low expectations? The dishes I ordered were generous, seasonal and flavorsome. The chanterelle toast with bleak roe, pickled onion and goat cheese was well balanced, and the spring chicken tasted great although it could be served a bit more moist. The portions were huge(!) and it was difficult to ingest everything. So the overall experience was good, except a few minor mistakes in the service.

The cocktails served at Strandvägen 1 are crafted with great care by Johan. I had several excellent "old fashioned" cocktails while watching a performance by Antonia Vai. One of the best parts of the drink was the enormous single rectangular ice cube that never melted. I did notice that unlike bartenders at home, bartenders in Stockholm tended to under measure while pouring into the jigger. I noticed because they would pour into the jigger away from your glass, instead of pouring into the jigger over your glass, and would underfill so as not to spill, whereas at home the bartenders tend to overfill and let the excess go into your drink. This is not a complaint, so much as a cultural observation. While at the bar, the manager Marcus recommended the beef carpaccio. I asked if I could eat it at the bar, because it doesn't seem like that's something people do in Sweden, and he was totally cool with it. The carpaccio is served thinly sliced, with a piece of buttered toast in the center, with an egg yolk and a spoonful of whitefish roe. I don't usually eat raw beef, and I almost never eat raw or cooked egg yolks, but it was superb. This is a great place to enjoy a drink and the company of friends.

Lovely lunch on sunny Saturday recently. I very much enjoyed my roast beef salad, and my husband relished his steak tartare. We have high praise as well for the gingery Moscow Mules. The dj's choice of music was a bit too techno for us, but we are pretty terminally middle aged, alas. The rest of the patrons seemed to enjoy it! Convenient to many tourist sites but with a hip vibe.

    White asparagus

The best white asparagus dish ever! They really know what to do; the dish had nice crunch on top inclusion hazelnuts which was a nice touch. I had the Arctic char with Lobster velouté. The other main was the steak with smoked butter. The Smoked butter really made the dish stand out.

The place is beautiful in winter and in summer. I have been there various times where I have usually enjoyed a hamburger and a drink or two. I recommend it as a beautiful place, the service relatively nice and great food. Right in the middle of the city. Right next to the national theater.

    Nice bistro style!

Surprisingly welcoming for a restaurant at this location, and we were even a family with kids! They were very flexible and friendly, managed to split main dishes to the kids liking! Not the cheapest alternative, but a very pleasant experience!

For our first round of drinks, we got the Easy Martini and Let them Eat Cake. The latter was too sweet for our liking but the Easy Martini had the perfect amount of sweet and tart. Our second round was the winner with the Girl Dinner and their Old Fashioned. The Girl dinner was crafted to perfection and possibly the best version of a martini we've ever had. The old fashioned too, made with WhistlePig 10 years was fantastic. The service cannot be faulted, we profusely thanked the lovely bartender, vowing to crow about it to whoever cares to listen and to be back when we are in Stockholm next.

Enter Penny & Bill! This cocktail bar features a rich, deep, and extremely well thought-out menu of very interesting cocktails. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable, and will be happy to talk to you about their creations, which have been helpfully sorted into informative categories like "Herbal & Punchy" and "Short & Fresh." Even classic cocktails, like the gimlet, are jazzed up with interesting ingredients (for example, their extremely popular Aperol Spritz features Suze and orange cordial in addition to aperol and champagne). Stockholm is an expensive city, but my drinking companion and I ended up ordering three cocktails each. We ended up with a bill of about a hundred US dollars, and after confronting $14 beers and $17 glasses of wine all over the rest of the city, we honestly felt like we got something of a bargain. I'd recommend this bar to anyone coming to Stockholm, especially as many of the city's very elite restaurants are nearby. It's a great place to wait for your reservation, and you'll end up saving money off what you would have spent on ludicrously marked up wine at your restaurant. I'd note that this bar is a little more on the "upscale" side and I felt slightly out of place in my flannel shirt. We passed several days in Stockholm drinking incredibly expensive glasses of wine with our meals, so we were thrilled to visit Penny & Bill on our last night in Stockholm. I'd put Penny & Bill on my to-visit list after reading about it in Eater Stockholm, and I feel like Eater undersold this place! The decor is Instagram-perfect (jewel-tone hunter green with mauve accents and lots of brass trim), and the aesthetic is so on point, from the music to the coasters to the bathroom -- the atmosphere sets the tone for the elegant, inventive, and diverse menu of cocktails. Whether you're a cocktail novice (as it seems many Stockholmers are) or a seasoned mixologist, there's likely to be something that suits your tastes; the menu is grouped into categories of mood/flavor to help steer you in the right direction. One thing I thought was interesting -- and probably a function of the cocktail-trepidation of the Swedes around here -- is that every cocktail costs 168 kroner, presumably so you'll choose by taste rather than price point. Penny & Bill is very committed to introducing people to cocktail culture, and they have lots of accessible concoctions on the menu that allow you to taste the familiar with a twist (e.g. the not-your-average espresso martini or their gussied-up Aperol spritz). I ordered three cocktails, all expertly made by a lovely and extremely knowledgeable bartender, and since tax/tip are included, these three drinks ran about $50 USD, which I think is very reasonable since I'm used to NYC prices. Please, please add this to your Stockholm itinerary; it's an amazing hidden gem and I hope more people discover it!
