I've been buying chocolates from Stowaway Sweets for 10+ years. Due to illness last year, I missed buying from them for Valentine's Day or other events. This year, I ordered online instead of visiting in person. I noted that the prices had gone up significantly, but my past experience was that their chocolates were fresh, creamy, not-to-sweet, and delicious, so I ordered anyway. It's clear that ownership and/or the chocolate formula and recipes have changed, because the chocolates I received were no better than a Whitman's Sampler. The chocolates were very bland and too sweet, without the creamy mouthfeel. They were so bad, in fact, that I drove to Phillips in Dorchester to buy replacements-- they, at least, are still high quality and worth the price. It appears from some research and asking around that their ownership has changed-- and that my experience of the serious decline in quality and value is similar to others'. If you were inclined to buy based on past experiences, skip it. read more

I felt like a kid in a candy shop here. Everything looked so good here and I couldn't decide what to get. So I got a 2 lb box of chocolate and filled it up with almost every type of chocolate in the store. The 2 lb box cost $85 but is totally worth it. Received a box of chocolates and fudge as a gift. They really pack a lot in there, perfect for sharing. Their chocolates are smooth and slightly sweet. The almonds and pecans mixed in with the chocolates were fresh and crisp. My friends and family really enjoyed these pieces of happiness as well. They couldn't stop talking about how good they were. The chocolate boxes were wrapped with pretty red wrapping paper and a gold ribbon. The chocolates and fudge were tightly packed in plastic wrap as well. Neat and perfect for shipping these goodies. Being originally from the North Shore and now living on the Left Coast, I try to bring back local favorites for the ladies at the office-- I am not personally a big chocolate fan but can appreciate the addicts among us. And I've never had a gift as well received as Stowaway Sweets, when the gals know I'm hitting the road they always ask if I can bring some back. On top of the quality is the story: supplier to the White House, fans include the Queen Mother and Katherine Hepburn, etc. Only downside: the stuff is fresh and real, so doesn't travel easily-- keep it refrigerated and pack it in your carry-on. I have been a fan of Stowaway Sweets for many years. I adore their milk chocolate orange creams. I visited on Saturday afternoon May 13. I got a lukewarm greeting and was never offered a sample; Something that has never happened in the past. This was disappointing but more so was the $18 cost of a half pound of chocolate. I'm not sure if this is reflective of the fact that it was Mother's Day weekend or if it is now the current price. Either way, I'm disappointed in my latest visit. read more

I grew up down the street from Stowaway Sweets and it is a very special place for me. I can remember the aroma when opening the door. I have been back a couple of times recently. The first, I found that they no longer made the chocolates that were my favorites. The cases were less than full or attractive. No temptation to get another type. The second on the 22nd of Dec. 2012 - there were NO chocolates! No aroma! Some run of the mill round chocolates with the colored foil. The kind that you can get at CVS. I'm so disappointed! The best. Service is very friendly and efficient. You are greeted warmly, not at all rushed, attended to without being hovered over. Perfect. I can't get over the quaint cottage! It is just too cute. The door sticks but is absolutely part of the charm. It looks like something out of the English countryside. You'll be charmed as soon as you pull the old gate and walk under the trees by a small pond. Delightful. Okay all of this makes the experience but let's get to what's important - the chocolate. Get the snowballs. Don't even wonder. Get them. Amazing. Everything I've tried there is delicious, you can tell they are made fresh with quality ingredients. I also love the meltaways, half chocolate dipped peppermints, and caramel enrobed marshmallows. This is just naming a few, and I better stop so I don't get a craving. I am sure a lot of pride goes into this outfit, as you can see care in every detail. What more could you ask from a chocolatier? Oh apparently that they have had standing orders from both Buckingham Palace and the White House, as well as, in days of yore, being a favorite of Katherine Hepburn. Very cool. Just returned from our family's semiannual visit to Marblehead and, always our first stop, Stowaway Sweets. We were very happy to find the NEW OWNERS HAVE KEPT OUR FAVORITE CHOCOLATES available at their beautiful home/shop! The young woman who helped us - and let us choose whatever chocolate we wanted to sample! - had worked at the wonderful shop through high school and was going off to college, but we're sure the staff will continue to be warm and welcoming, and help create boxes of just the chocolates we want. We left wishing we could carry more beautifully wrapped boxes of delicious chocolate in our suitcases; we are ready to order maple cream-filled chocolate, meltaways and much more sent to us from a family favorite for many years and happily with THANKS TO THE NEW OWNERS more years to come! read more

Good chocolate, makes a great takeaway gift.

A friend of mine sent me a box of chocolate covered cookies (she called them crackers - either way, yummmm) Sadly, due to some error in shipping, they arrived melted (I live in AZ). I contacted my friend who sent the candy, then I called the store to let them know how the box arrived. When I received the call back, the representative was very professional and apologetic. I explained that once refrigerated, I broke the cookies into pieces and had them over vanilla icecream - as I said, either way, yummmmm! Due to the unusually hot weather here in AZ, arrangements were made to take care of the melted candy where all parties were happy with the outcome. I must say that my interactions with both representatives at Stowaway Sweets was very pleasant and accomodating, even given an un-ideal arrival of a gift. Now I know why my friend has been going there for her chocolates for the past 15 years - great candy and even better customer service. read more
