Being all Italian I was blown away by the imported selection. Met Chris the Asst. Mgr. Walking and ensuring things were on point. Staff friendly and helpful I was more impresses with outside garden. This is the only grocery store (of size) for the city of Amesbury. However, it is serving Salisbury, Seabrook, Newburyport and Merrimack as well. SB & Nbpt have their own stores but you still get a lot of traffic from those areas. Consequently, this place is typically busy and is very busy depending on the day and forget about it when you have the beach/summer rentals!! They don't have the staff to handle it and you'll always see lines. The self checkout is encouraged (after all they have already paid for the scanners). But the line is always long and seems to have the grumpiest people around. You will be charged for your paper bags and expect the machine to glitch while you are attempting to checkout and bag your items. The machine will be audibly telling you what to do and if you are not going fast enough (not those exact words). Doesn't this sound like a good time for paying for more expensive groceries, doing the work yourself, and best case is just getting stern looks from the frustrated customers who are waiting up to actual verbal confrontation by said waiting customers. I don't remember the last time I shopped in the store and didn't find expired food items for sale on the shelves. I used to take them to the desk to get them pulled so someone would not buy it and get sick. Now they don't have the desk staffed FT anymore so I don't want to wait for them to do this. PLEASE be mindful of the expiration dates so you don't get sick or waste your money!! The cooler that houses organics and some packaged Boar's Head, packaged pasta and hummus is right next to the deli doors. Sadly, I have often seen mice droppings in this refrigerator case. While the food is packaged and remains sealed, it is disgusting and unsanitary to be going through the case touching items that mice have been on (even if they didn't get into the package they spread by touching the items). As a disabled customer, I can say that they no longer have the power chairs at both entrances. You will need to enter the store by the Elm St entrance (closest to the pharmacy) to get a chair. Both entrances have regular carriages but not the powered ones -- so don't get stranded. The bottle return is no where near that entrance so it is very inconvenient for disabled customers. The deli has an electronic ordering system which is helpful if you're in a time crunch. Avoid waiting and put the order in while you do your other shopping. I've never used the butcher section because it is typically closed when I'm there or I have waited for someone to appear and I've given up. I pharmacy is by far the best part of this store -- but it is not owned by the corporation. The staff there is very friendly, helpful and sadly overwhelmed because we have a lack of good pharmacies in the area. The bakery section is decent. Again, I rarely see anyone there and they are bringing items in from a central baking location. They cover the basics with cakes, breads, donuts, and bagels. None of the offerings are what I would consider upscale or beyond average. For the price, you're better off going with any of the several local bakeries around. Bathrooms are in the corner of the store behind the deli area. Thankfully they are typically fairly clean or clean enough that I don't feel like I need to immediately get home to scrub down. Overall, this grocery store serves a wide variety of communities and is busy because of the lack of food/staples stores in the area. They'd certainly suffer if they had a halfway decent grocery store nearby as a competitor. All in all, just be aware of expiration dates. The rest is just a matter of packing your own reusable bags and having patience. PS: Vermette's is the local store for groceries. It's small and doesn't carry a lot of stuff. We put in a pickup order today. The app took several minutes to allegedly verify if I were human upon checkout and then finally kicked over without anything to click to show signs of life. They charge $4 for a "pickup fee". I have never seen anywhere charge anything for store pickup. This was more obnoxious when I later got a message that six items were out of stock. How about maintaining or at least accurately reporting inventory? Delivery to the car took only two minutes. Upon reviewing the receipt at home, we saw an added charge of ten cents per paper bag used for the order. Again, I have never seen a Stop & Shop charge for paper bags in other stores. And they used four bags for ten items. One mostly empty bag said "Dry perimeter", and the other said "dry aisles", leading me to believe that the excessive use of bags was more out of convenience for assembling the pickup order than anything else... even after the $4 pickup charge. I would need to hear from others that this process dramatically improved before considering a return visit. read more

Although the location makes this stop and shop wonderfully convenient, I'm going to do my shopping at market basket from now on. There are several reasons for this decision. 1. Quality control is questionable. I purchased 40 dollars worth of lamb chops and about half were spoiled and inedible. 2. I hate self checkout lines. Whoever decided this was a good idea deserves to be smacked. Id rather wait in line for someone who knows what they are doing then contend with these machines that slow everything down and aggravate. 3. For the price of food items it actually turned out to be cheaper to get Whole Foods delivered than drive to stop and shop, shop myself and drive it home. All in all a genuinely unpleasant experience that could be rectified quickly, however senior leadership doesn't seem interested in doing so based on the other reviews. read more

It's fine. Produce is good quality. Not many registers open and the self-service line can get long at busier times. Generally speaking, watch out for the employees organizing orders for pickup. They speed through the aisles and share a dirty look when you're "in their way ". read more

Absolutely horrible. Always a problem. Went for a bag of salad, every single bag was brown. Horrible produce department. Went to get 3 items, none of them were there. Asked for a manager. The manager was argumentative and said he ordered the items, it's the factory's fault, I will not be able to locate the items at any other store. I was able to get all 3 exact items at Walmart in Seabrook. Employees at the management level are not dressed appropriately. Employees are allowed to wear offensive political gear. A teenager, probably half my age accused me of smelling like weed and said how he didn't like the smell at all. He asked me if I was smoking in the store, with my child? Seriously!? When I went to get in line (HUGE lines!) an employee jerked her thump over her shoulder. No, words telling me where the line ended. I left what we had picked up. Why give this place my money. I love this store. Have you been to the pharmacy, that crew works hard and knows most of their clients. I love being able to shop and then drop by the pharmacy on the way out. They are plenty of options to cater to everyones tastes. Boar Head Meats, Florist, store brands also a decent price well below the name brands. As an employee I'm a little perplexed that there is minimal management involvement with their employees, i.,e., are employees required to wear name tags and aprons, or not...and when employees do not comply with policy, shouldn't they be spoken to ? Shouldn't employees know beforehand where they will be scheduled to work when they come in for their shifts? Seems like hit or miss . Supervisors seem uncertain as to where each of us will be assigned to. We have had so many problems with the produce at this grocery store. At least once a week we bring home seemingly fresh food only to cut it open to see that it's rotten. This week it was a red onion that was green and brown with mold on the inside (felt firm and look fine on the outside), and last week it was 3 rotten apples in a 5lb bag. I also opened a new box of organic breakfast bars to find them covered in white, fuzzy mold. When I checked the box, they had expired 6 months ago and I had just purchased them that morning. The poor quality of food here is very disappointing. With the amount of food we have had to throw away here, it's worth the ten minute drive to shop elsewhere. read more

Great store!,although I'll admit the set up is somewhat bizarre and the meat dept service worker could be a bit more helpful. I find this Stop & Shop's produce to be very good. The bakery is good too. The deli has Bore's Head meats which are excellent. We really like their marinated meats as well. The store is always clean and it's not overcrowded. When they have sales the prices are very good and often excellent. All the people who work there are pleasant. I shop at Mkt Basket too, but over the years I have found real value and quality at Stop & Shop. I am so happy we have this grocery in Amesbury after many years of not having one. read more

Lazy employees that don't do anything in the front end and leave employees alone at the end of the night. They get one line open at the end of the night. There are good deals at the end of the night, there are some decent sales at times, I don't go there too much to say. read more

Solid quick and convenient. They have everything. It will be pricey but it will be fresh . My favorite part is that they hire people with disabilities. They are an equal opportunity employer. As far as Stop and Shops go - this one is underwhelming. Compare it to, say, the S and S in Exeter, NH you can see what I mean. The Amesbury location is a bit smaller and less stocked than I'd like to see. My biggest issue with this place is every time I try to use the bottle redemption, the machine is broken. It's been broken for close to 6 months and when I ask the friendly customer service people (the only reason I gave a 2nd star), they say "they show up whenever they want" and can't give a time frame when it'll be fixed. Missing a lot of items that are available online to choose from for delivery. Clean, layout is a bit odd and hard to navigate. They do one line and have someone who tells you which line go checkout in from the one big line, this does make things faster i would say. The reason I give two stars is the people in the store- not very helpful and my cashier was just awful. She was mean, and had a mask on saying "if you can read this you're too close", well I could read it and every other customer can read it from where you stand while being checked out. I'm surprised management allows her to wear this, she didn't have a name tag on I'm guessing because she would get lots of complaints. Asked me to move further back athough there is a red line that I was not crossing, and I was trying to look at the price. She shoved my reciept at the bottom of a bag with lots of heavy things on top, said "slips in the bag" and I looked at her kind of confused and she said goes "your RECIEPT, slip means reciept" well yes I know that, I don't know why you put it at the bottom of a bag. I had to stand there and take an item out of my bag and get my receipt, which she rolled her eyes at me for! The bagger named Maya was incredibly quick and nice and thoughtful enough to ask if I wanted my meat separate from other items. She could see the awkward interaction with cashier and was making up for it, I think! She seemed a bit timid and wouldn't even look at the cashier as if the cashier is mean to her as well- I wouldn't be surprised. Cashier said nothing else to me but what I wrote here, "step back" "slips in the bag" "your RECEIPT is slip" and that's all, no hello, no goodbye, no thank you. Grocery shopping is stressful enough during COVID, and she literally made it so I will never go back, stop n shop please make your employees remove masks with nasty messages- she's a customer service employee- she should wear that mask outside of work only. How can this store stay open? The employees are so rude and not helpful. The dress code must be nonexistent there. Dirty, untucked shirts... dirty aprons and just an overall unkempt look. I usually go to Market Basket but thought I would give Stop & Shop Amesbury a try since I was in the area. It was a Tuesday at about 3:30PM. I stood in line for about 20 minutes which to me is far too long. I like to call it the "Walmart Syndrome" where they are looking at the profit of the store so closely that they will not add another cashier on, and depend on people going to the self checkout which was a very long wait as well. Who wants to do self checkout with a cart full?? Being a frequent Market Basket shopper, I am used to them adding another cashier as soon as it gets busy to keep people moving and it is always a fast experience. Layout was a bit confusing, had a large magazine section which at first I thought was cool, and then I said who buys magazines anymore? On the positive side I like the large selection of stuff you don't typically see at a regular grocery store and it is a bigger store. Put 2 more cashiers on and you would improve the experience unless corporate is pushing this tight strategy on you to max profits. Bottom line is my time is important to me, I want out of the store asap especially during a pandemic. read more

Definitely not my favorite grocery store around. Their salad bar is great but over priced like most "pay per pound" services. I stop in here for quick last minute food needs. Stop and shop has a quality organic line called promise . They have boars head deli meat top of the line. Get mark downs all over the store and good sales weekly when you use there app you will get special coupons for 4.00 dollars of your order. No long lines. Friendly staff and good selection, but DO NOT BUY MEAT HERE! I've had to return meat three times, all different products. Two times it was rotten (stinking to high heaven) beef, and most recently it was a rotisserie chicken that tasted like it was soaked in bleach. With a little Googling I discovered that "chlorinating" chicken - yes, with bleach - is a thing here in the US. And if it's so bad that you can actually taste it, that means that what you have is a "reclaimed contaminated carcass". That's right. What they sold me to eat, was a chicken that was deemed contaminated, so they soaked it in bleach so they could still sell it as food. According to the staff, all these meat products are processed and packaged off-site (the rotisserie chickens are only cooked there), so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you should not buy meat at *any* Stop & Shop. read more

I find the workers to be pleasant and helpful and they do hire quite a few handicapped people. I actually go out of my way to stop here. Way more xpensive than other local options, impossible to find things (nuts in 3 different locations?) poor quality/poorly stockd produce, always the choice between brain damagd self serve checkout or waiting in endless line at a staffd checkout line. This store never has any plastic bags at the self checkout. I asked why and the lady told me the manager doesn't want to order them anymore. They had just 4 bags left at one of the 4 self checkouts. This store has not restocked Celeste pizza for ones in over a month and they only have a few of their stop and shop brand too. Other items never seem to be in stock lately either. I don't know what this manager is doing but I think he should be let go so someone who has a clue can turn this store around. read more
