1/16/17 NEW EDIT: When I came back to my apartment to get the last of my things during the last week of June, SOMEONE BROKE INTO MY APARTMENT???? WHAT?? Hell no. Regardless if it's gated or not, there's so many robberies and break-ins. I'm glad I wasn't there when they broke in. They completely destroyed the door handle. EVEN WORSE, I FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS BREAK-IN FROM MY ROOMMATE. ABSOLUTELY NO NOTICE FROM STAFF / HOUSING. What kind of staff is this when they don't report the break-ins to the people living in the area? And even after cleaning up the space, they took half of the security deposit for "cleaning purposes". Okay?? I still had flying cockroaches in the apartment so good luck to whoever lives in there next year. D240. Previous Review: This place is horrible. Stay away if you can. BUG PROBLEM: My housemates and I dealt with a roach problem for more than half the year and they are still in the apartment. They constantly multiplying and the management has done nothing significant in getting rid of them. I'm pretty sure when I moved out, there were even more. Flying ones too. Bathroom: will always mold. For being the newest apartment complex, shouldn't you at least have a bathroom fan? Even the older apartments have them. Kitchen: I have no idea who designed this kitchen but it is tiny and squishy. Someone's always burning something so the fire alarms go off a lot at any time of the day. Not worth your time or money.

They saved me donuts because I requested some... (they ran out the last time they had it) This made me so happy and I'm so grateful!!

Maintenance is alright, they usually deal with the work order within 2 days, but the problem isn't guaranteed fixed. We had a leaky faucet in the kitchen, and maintenance fixed it for a while, but then it came back after a few weeks. Water runs well, hot water usually comes on within a minute. However, the water in the sink is white for some reason. The kitchen is a little cramped, since usually 2-4 people share it. Maximum of two people can use the kitchen at a time, and the fridge space and kitchen cabinet space is limited. Mailboxes are a little complicated to get to, since I had to ask the RSO where they were. Swimming pool is a little small and dirty even though the staff cleans it daily (could be the residue that it accumulates over the day), but UCR has their own swimming pool too. Internet isn't covered, so you have to get your own router and set it up and pay for it monthly (it isn't billed to your Growl account). Other than that, great area, gated community, safer than the other campus apartments.

Firstly, I…read morewas told it would be a 12 month lease by Brittany; and was told by Erwin that regardless of what I enter on their housing application online, they would manually correct it for me to be 12 months. Not true, they waited until I paid my security deposit and then gave me the official lease for 15 months. Then I was told that the previous 12 months option had ended. Secondly, I was told by Erwin that I would be living with my housemate, and in order to do so, we needed to pick the premium option (which is much more expensive that the other options). However, after submitting the application and upon talking further with Brittany, it seems that the option is no longer available. We won't be able to live together for the first few months and we're still going to pay premium pricing. To top it off, I was referred to talk with the manager Chyna tomorrow because she's out right now, so our conversation ended. This happened within the span of 2 days, and I haven't signed the lease yet. Let's see how tomorrow's talk turns out. **UPDATE: thank you for resolving the issues that arose, Chyna. Really appreciate your help.**

I try to avoid leaving negative reviews, but after my experience at Highlander at North Campus, I…read morefeel obligated to share it so prospective tenants can make an informed decision. **If you read nothing else, please know this:** some positive reviews are written by students who are incentivized with chances to win raffle prizes, including things like e-scooters. I personally believe these make up the majority of positive reviews here. When you tour, you're shown a bright, clean, carefully staged model unit. My actual apartment looked nothing like it. On move-in day, it had an odor that made me question whether it had been cleaned, and the concrete floors were badly stained. I spent months trying unsuccessfully to remove the stains. Unfortunately, I signed a transfer renewal early into living here and moved into another unit. Somehow, the second was worse. The cabinets and refrigerator were still filled with the previous tenants' belongings, including cookware, opened food, and expired items. These appeared to be contributing to an infestation. My roommates and I had to dispose of everything ourselves. A maintenance employee also told me off the record that, based on the condition of the wood cabinetry, they suspected a termite infestation. A basic inspection before move-in should have caught all of this. Instead, apparently we were the inspection. As for safety, as a woman, I would not feel comfortable living here again. I witnessed unhoused individuals staying in the stairwells and was once approached in the parking lot by a man asking for money/food. When I reported people staying inside the building, staff simply told me to call the police. My partner also had his license plate stolen while parked in visitor parking. I don't blame Highlander for the theft itself, but prospective tenants should be aware. Building upkeep is horrible. I'm attaching a photo of what the elevator looked like on move-in day. If the photo looks bad, unfortunately I can't attach the smell. There were multiple occasions when spoiled milk or vomit was left in elevators for DAYS. Your choices were essentially the filthy elevator or the stairwell where people were sometimes staying. Lovely. Water shutoffs were also communicated terribly. Several times we received only an hour or two of notice, and once we were notified AFTER the water had already been shut off. I missed class because I hadn't had an opportunity to shower/get ready beforehand. I've attached my complaint. The Wi-Fi is unpredictable, which is ridiculous for housing marketed toward students. During finals week, it went out for hours at a time and I eventually drove to my parents' home in Los Angeles just so I could study. I'm fortunate I had that option. I also had multiple packages stolen and eventually stopped having packages delivered here altogether. Paying rent somewhere and still feeling like your belongings are safer being mailed to another city says enough. Lastly, I found the leasing staff consistently unhelpful and, at times, downright rude. During my transfer, my father asked what certain renewal/setup fees in the lease were actually FOR. Staff repeatedly responded, "It's in the leasing agreement!" He explained that he knew they were listed--he was asking what he was paying for. Brittany eventually told him he'd have to wait until after move-in to have his questions answered. A leasing office should be able to explain the fees it's charging residents. "It's in the lease" is not an explanation. Ultimately, no apartment is perfect, but this wasn't one isolated problem. It was filthy units, an infestation, poor upkeep, safety concerns, stolen packages, unreliable Wi-Fi, poorly communicated water shutoffs, and frustrating management. By my final few months, I'd had enough. I looked for someone to take over my lease and had a few people interested. However, upon seeing all the move-in fees that Highlander charged, they changed their minds. Despite still paying rent here, I moved back in with my parents and commuted from Los Angeles to UCR instead. I would rather commute from Los Angeles to Riverside than live at Highlander at North Campus. I think that says more than any star rating could. Please look past the staged model unit, read the critical reviews carefully, and think twice before signing a lease here.

(The actual room) not their "show room" which is nothing AT ALL like the real thing. DONT SIGN THE LEASE until you see the room they're actually going to give you. I was told by the girl at the front desk that the manager said we're not doing any clean outs of apartments when only the tenants move out of one of the rooms. Can you imagine renting a home or a hotel and come to find out that they don't clean it first. So before my daughter moved I , I had to come in and shampoo the carpets, scrub the walls, clean the filthy vents, clean the bugs out of the closet, etc. before my daughter could move in. It was so disgusting that she only lived there for about a week. There was a bag of rice in the cupboard from the two girls that already lived there and it was completely taken over with bugs. They were crawling all over the cupboards. It looks like nothing has been updated since the 60s my daughter looked at the online model apartment and thought that it looked fine. Big mistake. The whole apartment had a moldy smell that I'm sure is not healthy to breathe in. There was food smeared on the bedroom wall and when we asked them to take care of it while they just painted right over it and didn't even bother to clean the food so yeah, It had a new coat of paint, but you could see the bumps from the food smeared on it. I wouldn't even bother with trying to live here.
