Jesus Christ. The carne asada had no business being that tender. The tortilla was warm, soft, slightly charred, and holding everything together like it knew exactly what the fuck it was doing. Then the guac hit. Then the salsa. Suddenly I'm hunched over the table making noises that should've gotten me asked to leave. And the fries? Filthy. Disgusting. Obscene. I'd do things for those fries that would permanently alter my relationship with my family. By the end I had sauce on my hands, my face, probably my clothes. Zero dignity. Absolutely ravaged. I sat there staring at the empty wrapper like a sailor watching his wife disappear over the horizon. Five stars. No notes. I need a cigarette.

Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

Instead of oils, sauces, plastic lined baskets they are simply steamed. El Rey's tacos are on the smaller side, compared to street tacos, but with less filling, not overloaded, open with sauces. These are simply made and presented. Semi closed little packets of corn torilla and meat opened up and with lettuce, salsa added I generally eat a half dozen as a snack. Again I still prefer the offerings of tacos de canasta like green sauces, moles, chicharrones, potatoes. These are a regional specialty that most people haven't seen or made before so when comparing it to other types these often don't get a fair shake. These are simple, flavorful little bites that taste a little like moist tamales eaten without a fork, not how when you eat it off a plate and a fork. They offer a few different fillings that are standard as well as some seasonal ones. Get their red sauce.

I came here for their vegan menu. I've had Lady G as a street vendor before and now just felt like I needed good vegan food. Their menu is a bit confusing.. I didn't know what the steamed food was. Was it under the lids of the serving trays? I knew I wanted more than just lumpia and since they had a sign that said "vegan pancit and lumpia" I just ordered it. They make the lumpia fresh. I needed to wait about 10 minutes and I was OK with that. I ordered to go so when I opened up my container in the car, I took a bite out of the lumpia and it was steamy! But I was hungry!! Our vegan friends had already been, of course, but they'd liked it and was game for a return visit. It's a fast-casual setup, where you order at counter and they bring out the food to you. I saw their sign for a Birria ramen special and had to try it. It was saucy, not soupy, with good flavor. I wished the noodles were a bit more al dente but enjoyed it fine overall. The hubby had the chorizo burrito combo plate, which was HUGE and delicious. The horchata was way too sweet for my taste, unfortunately, but the sweet-toothed hubby thought it was pretty good. The cute modern decor was pleasant, as was thr friendly service. Definitely would be up for a return trip. One caveat was that it was very loud due to all the hard surfaces--can't imagine what it must be like during the lunch rush!
