Popped into grains for the first time today and was splendidly surprised. There is quite the limited selection as the cuisine is rather niche: vegan Asian American fusion. We ordered the popcorn cauliflower and potaato wedges. The popcorn cauliflower was yummy and flavorful. It was paired with ranch and bbq sauce. The sauces were a little less flavorful, but I know these would be extra delicious with a rich aioli. The wedges were thick and delicious, as well. I LOVE THIS PLACE! TLDR: An amazing restaurant with incredible staff, gorgeous atmosphere and a wide variety of food (both vegan and non-vegan options). Came here on a whim for a brunch/lunch and was so pleasantly surprised. The menu had a wide variety of options, for food (appetizers and mains). There was also coffee and cocktails. We tried the monkey coffee (god tier), popcorn "chicken" (fire), the pan seared fettuccine (amazing) and the fried chicken ginger rice (non-vegan, they loved it). You can taste the quality and care put into every single thing they make, and if that wasn't already enough, the staff is so sweet and kind. I have not reviewed this location in a long time... now they are serving meat .. now they are serving brunch and cocktails! Right up front, I can say that this is one of my favorite locations in San Diego and their food is always consistent. I don't know what kind of magic they put in their breading for the fried items but it is absolutely amazing! For my first time having brunch I did the orange chicken and waffles . The waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside , the chicken had their amazing breading and an orange flavor that was not too overpowering. There is a small side of fruit as well as an orange infused syrup. Overall, as usual, Grains has amazing and friendly employees, delicious food, and a vibe that is perfect for any day of the week. OMG, their chicken menu is SOOO good! Tried their orange chicken, the chicken sandwich, and the breakfast quesadilla. Subbed the kale salad with the chicken sandwich. I have to describe the chicken sandwich because it's like no chicken sandwich I've had before. The texture is akin to a crab cake -- shredded chicken that's made creamy with a touch of veggies mixed in, so that every bite is a little different -- topped with melted cheese and sandwiched between crust-off, lightly-grilled but spongy bread. I'm also completely hooked on the coffee drinks. The Grains mocha (get it with oat milk) is lusciously creamy and has little melty bits of chocolate. The banana coffee is a creamy blend of banana cream and cocoa with a shot of coffee, a decadent mix of sweet, bitter, and fruity. Service is always friendly and neighborly, and the atmosphere is refined but cozy. The owners are great about keeping the decor classy but full of personality. Disclaimer I'm a meat eater so I might be easily impressed when I eat vegetarian/vegan food that is delicious which this all was! My wife and I ordered the tom kha, drunken angel, calamari, and holy shiitake. I would order them all again except for the tom kha, but that's cause I'm a tom yum guy and not to the fault of the restaurant. The workers were super friendly and helpful and the inside was warm and welcoming. They also allow dogs outside on the patio area which is where we sat. They have plenty of drinks options including kombucha, probiotic sodas, beers and wines. The holy shiitake and Calamari were fried mushrooms but hit different experiences. Calamari was light and fresh with a vinaigrette like dip. The shiitake was more "meaty" and with a sweet and sour like sauce. We enjoyed both and cleared both plates! They were fun to eat. Drunken angel was flavorful yet felt light and clean. The noodle could be a bit more al dente but still good. Already planning to take our vegetarian friends here. read more

Visited Grains on 2/28/25 with my mother and daughter. My friend gave me a gift card to use for my belated birthday dinner. FYI they only sell gift cards online unless you talk with Katia (owner) and she will make a gift card for you. Parking was very hard to find, it's all street parking and very dark. Not much street lights around that area. Once I entered, I was greeted by Katia and her staff. It was nicely decorated inside. Large open space, wooden tables and chairs, they have a patio area as well. You pay for your order first and take a number to your desired seating area. Our food came out super fast! We ordered a lot of stuff. We had salted pepper "calamari" mushroom, french fries, onion rings, holy shiitake, sweet rice and mango, pad thai, Panang curry and drunken angel. All of the food was delicious, it had great flavor. My least favorite was the drunken angel, something was missing from it. Overall, sweet staff. Great vegetarian dishes & nice place. I feel like this place flies under the radar, but it's so good! I love the atmosphere, it's such a cute spot and the staff is so friendly. The food is great, I usually get the Drunken Angel noodle dish and the Dragon Balls appetizer, which is so delicious and very unique - can't find these anywhere else. We were searching for a good vegan, whole-food, plant-based spot in San Diego, and Grains looked promising. Unfortunately, it fell short for me. The restaurant was freezing inside--I had to keep my puffer jacket and hat on the entire time. I also prefer organic ingredients, but they have very little, including non-organic tofu. Ordering was easy and they were happy to answer any questions I had. The food was way too oily for my taste. My husband ordered the Pad Thai and thought it was okay but also on the oily side. They gave crazy copious amounts of noodles and very slim pickings for any veggies - I wouldn't go back, but if that's not a dealbreaker for you, give it a try and see what you think. The only thing I'd change is for the jalapeños to be stir fried and for there to be salt and pepper seasoning on everything to imitate real S&P dishes. Holy Shiitake: - satisfyingly dense, crispy, and chewy with a sweet soy glaze sauce. Feels a bit like fried battered clams. Drunk Angel: - nice, light, and fresh. The pasta was addicting to eat. Such a great little Thai spot. I heard this place used to be vegan and vegetarian and they incorporated meat options onto the menu. Honestly, the vegan options are just as good as the non-vegan options. Their chili oil has got to be homemade! It was so good and had a good kick to it as well. Our waitress was friendly and gave excellent recommendations for happy hour. We started with the dragon balls and Tokyo fries. The dragon balls were a little sweet and the fries were salty and spicy, so they complimented each other. The wasabi sauce on the fries was pretty fire, but didn't make my nose run. The red bean in the dragon balls was also a good texture. The drunken angel noodles were divine and the panang curry is perfect for a cold, rainy day in March. I love this place! It was so clean, roomy, bright and warm with the yellow and white colors, wooden tone of the seats, the playful decor and wall art. Very inviting. The whole cafe is plant-based so there were many food options. I went with Grains Garden, a stir-fry dish of vegetables and tofu with a side of rice. I skipped the rice and the cook was so sweet and added extras veggies for me. A healthy and flavorful dish. Washed my meal down with a some crisp and bubbly ginger kombucha. I enjoyed my meal very much, staring at the trees outside, finding my moment of zen. Host and server were very friendly and cheerful. I appreciate this plant-forward restaurant a lot. Despite this being forward with the veggies and vegan offerings, there are a lot of carb-heavy and fried offerings on the menu that I don't jive with all the time. However, I'm a sucker for their kale tempura and their popcorn "chicken" cauliflower, and I think the latter, among many other appetizers and items, are on their happy hour menu. I've enjoyed their house pasta and thai yellow curry but admittedly haven't eaten too much off of the main menu yet. They also have a good selection of beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Found this casual place not far from my sister's, and very happy we checked it out! The food was excellent, very fresh vegetables, delicious! We ended up getting the same thing, grains garden with tofu, with different things removed. Very mild, yet flavorful, to which we added chili oil, Sriracha, and another chili sauce for spice. Ordered at counter and food brought to our table by very nice woman. Liked the plants, many real, and fun pictures of birds and more plants. Outside tables also available. They have nice pan-asian dishes and offer brunch, too! Looks like they do take out. It was not busy, not too loud mixed house music, someone was even working from there. SERVED ME A CHICKEN SANDWICH WHEN I ORDERED MUSHROOMS AND THEY DID NOT CARE I went to Grains for the first time on Sunday January 25th right when they opened. This was my vegan girlfriend's favorite place and she was excited for me to try it. Our group of 5 was the only people there so it wasn't busy. Apparently this was the first weekend they introduced serving meat on the menu, but we didn't order meat. I ordered a Vegan mushroom sandwich, but instead I got a not Vegan, real chicken sandwich! I had already eaten half of it thinking this mushroom sandwich that's imitating a chicken sandwich is really authentic. Once we figured out it was actually chicken we were astounded they would make that mistake and we immediately brought it to the attention of the server and they just said, "oh. sorry." and walked away. No replacement. No refund. No real apology. I'm not vegan so it wasn't my worst day, but luckily my vegan girlfriend sitting next to me didn't take a bite like she normally would. When we kindly emailed the business to let the owner know of the mistake, they never responded. This was not the only bad experience that happened with our orders this day but this was the main thing we wanted to let people know about. (One coffee never came, tofu uncooked, cook chewing gum or eating while cooking not sure what she was doing) Vegans beware when ordering your food. They don't seem to care. read more
