DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago - Alsip

I wish I had found this place years ago! Nice accommodations and fabulous staff. And of course,…read morethe chocolate chip cookies served warm. I found this gem when looking for a hotel that would allow me to leave my care on the premises until I return. They have a stay and park program that I love. I stay the first night, catch the airport shuttle the next morning, and leave my car. No more paying to park a couple miles away and waiting on the shuttle bus to get there to pick us off or drop us off. When you return from your trip, you catch the free Doubletree hotel shuttle back to your car, get in your car, and leave. No need to check back in with the front desk. The shuttles to and from the airport are complimentary. Just give your driver a nice tip.

The DoubleTree by Hilton in Alsip Illinois is a hard place to review. There are some good things…read moreto note but these positive attributes are outweighed by the negatives. Let me start with the good stuff. The rooms were quite nice. To be honest, this is NOT a 4 star hotel, so do not expect a Ritz Carlton. But the furniture and the furnishings were quite nice and new. The towels were thick and heavy. The toiletries were very nice and plentiful. Likewise, the lobby is nicely done and big enough to handle lots of people at one time. We stayed at the hotel because of a big event/meal and, I have to say the event and food there were really good. The ballroom was nicely appointed and the food was very tasty (a hard thing to do when you're feeding about 300 people). But the hotel event staff ran a tight ship and I noticed a fair number of people going back through the buffet line for seconds. That is a good sign. Okay now to the bad stuff. The front desk staff were not very friendly or helpful. They looked at you, if they did at all, like you were bothering them. Housekeeping was sub-par; slow and they did not really clean anything. The bar and the dining room were also not good. The food in the bar and the breakfast in the dining room were not worth going back for at all, ever! One final thing to note is that the hotel is isolated in an area that is not so nice. Surrounding businesses are not interesting, there are no good restaurants and there is no place to shop if that is your thing. The hotel itself might be worth a 4 star rating here but the negative aspects drag it down to a 3 star review. Do I recommend this hotel? No.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I gave Sharn's a 4 star…read morereview in 2017 mostly because of the nostalgic decor that reminded me of the 70's. Carpeted walls, ,lots of mirrors (Including the ceiling), and varied lighting. A less expensive alternative to the Sybaris. Well, they lost one star when they remodeled the rooms. Sure, the decor was getting a little old and worn, but that couples retreat theme was their hook, what set them apart from the myriad hotels in the area. They seem to have kept the couples retreat theme by specifying 2 adults to a room. And, apparently some of the rooms still have mirrors, but the room we were given had none of that. More on why we did not get the room we wanted below. The remodeling must have included a new boiler system, because the water in the rooms was boiling hot when turned to hot and just hot when turned to cold. If you wanted Cold water, you needed to use Ice, or keep some water in the mini-fridge. Large flat-screen TV's were also part of the remodeling, and they even had handy guides to help you figure out the bewildering mode & channel system of the all-purpose remote. They lost the second star because of their reservation policy. There isn't one. I called about 2 weeks before my visit to Chicago to book the 2nd floor smoking room, and was assured I had the room reserved. When I called 2 days before my visit I was told I had no reservation. I then booked on-line at their attractive website, specifying I wanted the 2nd floor smoking room and got a printed sheet CONFIRMING my reservation. When I arrived, I was told that the second floor smoking room was already occupied by someone else. Management explained to me that when someone wants to stay an extra night then the reserved room may not be available. In EVERY hotel in the world, if someone wants to stay an extra night, the patron will be told that the management would be very happy to have them stay longer, but they would have to switch rooms because that one was reserved. Management was not even apologetic, and offered NO compensation for the inconvenience. So Sharn's hotel have converted themselves from a unique hotel experience to the same thing you can get in a hundred other hotels and motels within a five mile radius. The ONLY thing that still sets them apart is that they still offer smoking rooms, which a lot of hotels do not.

Have NOT had bed sheets changed and had to go get my own towels - no "fresh" towels. WTF. I understand if it's been possibly 2 days but 5??!!!! Do your self a favor and PASS THIS PLACE UP!!!!!!! (This greeted me when I came back to my room).

We finally make it to the hotel and the lobby looks clean and orderly so we are happy (that doesn't last). We go up to the desk person and she can't find our reservation, no worries right they have other rooms. When she gives us the paper work to sign the total is $115 with a "discount". That's $30 more than we were initially quoted but I am so tired and cranky I let it slide. We go up old ratty dirty elevator and get off on the 3rd floor. As soon as the elevator opens the combination smell of dirty old man, cigarettes, and massive BO wafts towards our direction. We get into our room and you can tell the cleaning crew did the bare minimum to keep this place "clean". I've stayed at better hole in the wall hotels in Mexico! The coffee pot, which I had no intention of using was full of coffee stains. And the disposable cups were all crush that two of them had holes in the bottom. Against better judgement we get up for their continental breakfast. I can't complain about the breakfast it is usual breakfast fare ie. toast, cereal, etc. But that room was hot an MUGGY! It felt gross. They had no plates and the milk was not in a cool container so needless to say I stayed away from that mess. The reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the desk people were nice and they ended up giving us the original price of $84. Next time I will prefer to stay in my home oven than this place.

The hotel I booked with was bought out by Motel 6 and I was not notified until I arrived, making it too late to make a change. NO breakfast was included (well, coffee....that's not breakfast). NO hot water in my room for the 3 days I stayed there, I had to shower in different rooms. The cleaning crew came in and left my blinds WIDE OPEN for everyone to see my personal belongings while I was away all day. No blow dryers. No refrigerators, or microwaves. Smoking rules were NOT enforced and my entire room smelled like smoke ALL DAY LONG! Smokers were smoking directly outside their rooms and right by my air conditioning intake. Nothing was done about this. Beds were so hard I might as well of slept on the floor. And crappy half size pillows provided! HORRIBLE! Didn't sleep at all the 3 nights I stayed there. Staff was extremely rude and not at all understanding. WORST HOTEL STAY EVER!!!
