We sat down and talked about everything my husband and I dreamed about for the reception - and Chris and the SHYC made it all come true. It's a beautiful space. The fireplace was lit, we had a gelato sundae bar set up in the library, and all the rooms were open so our guests had plenty of room. We got to enjoy a sunset over the water through the windows that span the entire length of the club. I am still getting tons of compliments about the food. Chris worked with us to set up stations with made to order steak, pasta, veggies, and bacon scallops that were TO DIE FOR! All of the servers, bartenders, everyone involved was so kind, helpful and in a celebratory mood. It was absolutely perfect and VERY reasonable!! Katie was a delight to work with in the months and weeks leading up to our wedding and the banquet manager Ashley was accessible and helpful the few days before and day of our reception. We were surprised by the quality of the food- my husband and I ate our entire dinners and had a couple apps during cocktail hour! Unheard of, right? It was so yummy I insisted we sit for a few minutes, enjoy each others' company, and eat our meals. We were 3/4 way through our first floor tour when another party arrived. Instead of adding them to the tour, and then covering what they missed, she asked them to wait. The living room is beautiful. Plaster work, beautifully hand painted walls (by a modern artist), elegant furnishings. Photos of the home pre-restoration are showed and discussed in this room. So much work has been done! There are also photos of the family and you learn a bit about them here. We also had the opportunity to ask questions about the home and family. Through this Q&A we discovered in what types of 'shipping' the family were involved. The dining room table displays a variety of period china. The fireplaces on this floor are marble. The dining room light fixture is very interesting, and although not original fits very well and makes a statement. Sadly, the kitchen is not restored for guests to view. There is however a butlers pantry in the dining room displaying more serve ware. An Antarctic research station is named after Captain Palmer and a live feed is shown in the next room as well as several ship models including the one Capt. Palmer was on when he discovered the continent. Information on the gentleman who created these models is also presented. There is a variety of information in this room about Capt. Palmers Antarctic discovery and one of his shipping trades: seal pelts. The short hallway between dining room and this include other items of trade such as Palmer tea and jade. The upper floors are self toured and there are three of them. Stair cases narrow as you ascend. The highest point is a small cupola surrounded by windows with a small bench seat that fits about three. There was a nice breeze with the windows open and long views. The two floors between include bedrooms, 'toilet' rooms, children's play room, fire alarm display, sewing room, office space and storage. Plenty of old furnishings, linens, toys etc. I particularly love the sewing box. Beautiful, intricate work. The price for the two locations is very reasonable and if you have time, are looking for an air conditioned space, love history/architecture/home décor, then this is going to be a nice stop. Free parking is available at the side of the house. Enter at the grand front door. A gift shop is located just inside to the left of the entrance. A restored ice house, storage and out houses are behind the home. I saw no public facilities (but didn't ask). There is a fair amount of land with the home including a small pathway with bench seating along the water on the other side of parking. In July there were plenty of mosquitos. Picnic tables are located behind the research library next to parking. Tickets may be purchased on line through their website as well as at the Stonington light house museum. Stonington residents and historical society member admission is free. Military, senior and first responder discounts are available. July and August the museum is open daily 10am - 4pm. The rest of the year hours are limited - check the website for information.

He was credited with discovering Antarctica (whilst hunting for seals) in 1820 at the young age of 21 with a minimal crew. He grew rich and built a stately home in his birthplace of Stonington, CT. After his brothers wife died, Nathaniel and his wife (who were childless) shared the home with his widowed brother and his 4 children. It was great to learn the history of this family and home, feeling transported to another time and imaging what it must have been like. I want to know more. Beautiful furnishings, interesting history and a beautiful setting. Parking is free and plentiful and the grounds are serene and quiet. A great way to spend an hour or so in this quaint town.

We were looking forward to getting married on October 1, 2021, at The Meadows but after our check was cashed that feeling disappeared. Since making our deposit we've been lied to, ignored and dismissed. Our issues began when we made our initial deposit. My fiance' grew up in Stonnington and it was important for her to have our wedding near her hometown. We were so excited to book this venue that on the weekend of August 22/23, 2020, while in Stonnington, we stopped off to give Sarah the check. There was another function getting set up and my fiance asked a staff person if Sarah was around so she could give her the check. The staff person said that Sarah had just stepped out and that she would give the check and signed contract to her. I called the following week to verify that the check had been received and what resulted was very odd. Sarah texted my fiance scolding her for dropping off the check, telling my fiance' that no Meadows staff were working that day and sounding shocked that we would want to make the deposit as quickly as we did. My fiance was so upset by this interaction that I ended up calling Sarah to deal with the situation. Sarah told me that she had the contract but did not have the check so I would have to send another check. I spent the money to have the initial check cancelled and mailed off another check. The second problem started when Sarah said she had the contract in hand when in reality it had been mailed to us by the bride and groom of the event. On September 1, 2020, I emailed Sarah to verify that she received the check and to find out what the next step in the planning staging was. I didn't receive a response. On September 16, 2020 I emailed Sarah to follow-up to see what the next step in the planning was. She responded on September 20, 2020, that the focus was on 2020 weddings and our tasting would be booked "early next year." In March of 2021 when we hadn't heard anything, I called Sarah on March 22, 2021 to see what our next step would be. I called again on March 30 and April 21st with no response and texted her on March 30th without a response. I submitted a message through The Meadows Facebook page and Instagram account without any responses. I did reach out to a caterer who informed me that Sarah would get in touch with me. On March 30, 2021, I submitted an email through The Meadows website looking to get in contact with someone but to also express several concerns about the lack of communication, questioning if we still had the date reserved since The Meadows didn't have a signed contract from us, asking when the tasting would be scheduled and feeling lied to about the contract. Sarah responded on March 30, 2021 only to say we had the date reserved and to please send the contract. The other issues weren't addressed, I emailed her again on March 30, 2021 to ask about the tasting and as of the date of this email have not received a response. Up to this point Sarah has been untruthful of being in possession of our contract, has not responded to simple inquiries and has dismissed my voiced concerns. I understand we are not the only wedding. I understand that this is a very challenging time. But we couldn't even have been afforded a simple "we're sorry things are crazy. I'm sorry I've been dismissive." We didn't have the confidence in spending an additional ten thousand dollars and having our special day be such. I understand we're not the only couple who is trying to get in touch with staff. What I don't understand is why we're being treated as a bother and someone that can't get a reply.

In our 30 years experience, we can tell you that when an event is excellently executed; whether it be with the food, timeline, cleanliness, etc., it ALWAYS has to do with the Event Planner. Danielle is PROFESSIONAL, ARTICULATE & EXPERIENCED!!!! Ian is lucky to have her, but he already knows that, as he stated as such when he introduced himself. She represents the business well and executes their events with ease. What an asset she is to their business. The great execution of any event is so important, especially a Wedding Event because you don't have a chance to redo it.
