12/31/25 My wife and…read moreI have been loyal to the Marriott brand for over 20 years, and for New Year's we decided to spend a few days in Asheville. I booked a one-night stay at the Grand Bohemian on New Year's Eve, using points along with an elite night upgrade award. From the moment you arrive, the hotel is impressive. The drive-up experience feels like you're entering the hotel itself. The valet service was outstanding -- they handled our luggage and belongings with great care and provided clear, helpful instructions on where to go for check-in. Walking through the front doors, you're greeted by a large open fireplace with chairs and couches surrounding it, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The associate at check-in was excellent. She thanked us for being Titanium members, provided water, and clearly explained where our room was located. We took some time to walk around the hotel, especially since it had been closed due to last year's flooding. The restoration work was impressive -- floors and walls had been replaced, and much of the décor had either been cleaned or fully refreshed. The hotel looks amazing. We then went up to our second-floor king suite, and it was exceptional. Straight ahead was a large bathroom, with a deck and minibar to the left. Waiting for us was a board with chocolate-covered strawberries and a handwritten card wishing us a happy anniversary and my wife a happy birthday -- a very thoughtful touch. The view from our window overlooked the entrance to the Biltmore Estate. While waiting for our luggage to arrive, we turned on the 65" wall-mounted TV and took in the room. When the luggage arrived, it was promptly unloaded, clothes were hung in the closet, and everything was placed neatly -- truly excellent service. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the shower had great water pressure. We had a late checkout, so we slept in, went downstairs for breakfast before it ended, then returned to the room for a nap before checking out. Breakfast was very good -- see my separate Yelp review of The Red Stag for details. Overall, this is an outstanding hotel. The staff goes out of their way to make sure you're well taken care of, and everyone we interacted with made us feel welcome. Yes, it's expensive -- but the level of service and attention to detail make it worth it. We will absolutely stay here again, or at one of the other Grand Bohemian hotels.

It gives off cool mid-evil vibes and the architecture throughout was unique. Every Grand Bohemian has its "thing" and you can see the similarities as you visit them as well. The valet guys were very helpful as the front desk agents. Our room was spacious, clean and I loved that we had this opening between the beds and bathroom. The showers were nice, bathrobes were super comfy as well as the beds. We like that there was several places in walking distance and a short drive to many restaurants and shops. Definitely a nice luxurious stay for us and they have the best smelling hand soap and lotion! The gym facility had everything I needed to do a solid work out. Really enjoyed staying here!

We walked in without a reservation, sat down, and had the kind of long, unhurried dinner that feels increasingly rare. Nobody rushed us. They let us share plates without hesitation. The menu is billed as New American, and that's the right phrase for it -- genuinely eclectic, pulling from Spanish, French bistro, and Southern influences without committing to any one of them. The pork chop was excellent. The grilled carrots were genuinely memorable. The green salad was simple and well done. Our waiter recommended a wine that we were pleased with, and even offered a tasting. The wine list is deep for a room this size, and the cocktail list looks the same. Music was at that sweet-spot volume where you can hear your conversation partner and still hear the song. You could bring your parents, or come on a date, it works either way. Some farm-to-table places feel pretentious; this one doesn't. They don't make you feel dumb for not knowing every local distributor. One small gripe: a 3% "kitchen staff fee" printed on the back of the menu. I'm all for paying the kitchen, but I'd rather see it built into the prices up front. 4.7 Stars. What would push it to a solid five stars: drop the hidden fee and bake it into the menu prices. That's genuinely the only thing standing between this and a perfect night out.

Local ingredients and really good food. A nutty amuse bouche to start the night. Beets and pickled apples were interesting in a good way. Cheddar onion rye sourdough was adequately sour and warm, on the dense side. Trout was super moist and the mustard sauce complimented it very well. One of the better fish dishes I've had in NC. Also tried some of the pork chop (very tender & great sauce) and mushroom risotto (herby and great flavors on the mushrooms).

It was elevated Southern cuisine, and we enjoyed it enough that we may go back before leaving the area. The restaurant has a comfortable feel -- upscale, but not stuffy. The service was excellent. The servers were personable and attentive without hovering. At one point, I accidentally dropped my napkin, and our server immediately brought me another one. Our water glasses were continually refilled, and our server checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. My partner and I liked so many things on the menu that we knew ordering soup, salad, an appetizer, and entrées would be too much. We told our server we were sharing, and for most of the courses, they divided the portions and brought them out on separate plates. That was another small touch that showed they were paying attention to detail. There wasn't anything we had that we wouldn't order again. We started with the seasonal soup, which was a tomato bisque, followed by the strawberry and feta salad. The country ham board was excellent and actually had me looking for Lusty Monk mustard the next day. For our main entrée, we shared the shrimp and grits, which was also delicious. Great food, thoughtful service, and a comfortable upscale atmosphere. This was the best meals we had in the area.

Delicious, but make sure you love ginger before ordering!

We were told there was going to be a 15 min wait, but we're seated with five minutes. We got crab Rangoon, which was delicious. The portion was fairly small for the price. But, fortunately main courses followed soon after. I got the pad thai and it was really tasty. I chose tofu as the protein, and they went fairly light on the tofu. Also, I'm used to my pod Thai having a few more bells and whistles, like more greens, sprouts, and more than one lime wedge. But, it's on me for not requesting extras of those things. I ate all of my food. The portion was just right for a sit down meal and that worked well for me because as a tourist who was bopping around town, I did not want to have a to go box. Service was friendly and attentive. The place was pretty big and fairly loud, but the tables were spaced well between each other so we weren't impacted by the noise on either side. If you're trying to find a place that multiple people will agree on, this isn't a bad choice because they have a variety of different cuisines. Overall, I would definitely stop back at some point, though I might not seek it out as my top choice for a place to eat in the area.

We tried the popcorn shrimp, which are breaded and crispy. Really great. We of course, had to try the Mountain of fries - these are matchstick fries and the best part was the three different sauces that come with it. The chipotle ketchup was my favorite. We also tried the wings, which were good..I am not a huge wing fan, though. The jalapeno poppers (wrapped in bacon with a cheese filing) were great, as were the steak nachos. And of course, the hummus with the fry bread was great, too. My hubby liked the hazy IPA that was on draft. Even better at $3.50 a pint during Happy Hour. I really liked the cocktails - some of my favorite was a new espresso based tequila (for the summer menu) and the creamsicle. Service (5/5): Everyone up here is super nice - the manager Landry, bartender Raine and all the servers were really fantastic. Ambiance (5/5): Location - This is the top of the Bristol Hotel, and one of the only rooftop bars in Bristol. From the top you have a lovely view of the famous Bristol sign, great when it lights up at night.

However, this place clearly gets packed in the evening. There were lots of brews and ciders. They seem to rotate quite a bit, and there's a mix between local options and options from other states. A huge plus is very LGBTQ+ friendly without explicitly being a queer spot. Rainbows everywhere. The bartender told us that a local podcast offered to make them coasters and he said yes, but only if they make them as queer as possible. They were playing some alt music on a record. Also, locals were super friendly and engaged us tourists in convo. Lastly, there's a limited selection of games- so we played a little trivia game and had fun with it. Overall, I would definitely include this spot when bar hopping again. It is an easy walking distance of a lot of great stuff and it was easy enough to get to, even though it isn't on the main drag. It's on a small, one way side street but there was parking nearby. When we approached the front door we instantly noticed they were LGBTQ+ friendly which made it even better. Our stop was early in the evening, probably around 5 so it wasn't busy. We were greeted by a friendly bartender and he gave us time to look over the menu. My first choice was the Limonada Hard Italian Soda. This was absolutely delicious! The tartness from the lemons was noticeable but not over powering and this was a very drinkable beverage. I don't like seltzers at all, yes this wasn't a seltzer but it did have a bit of carbonation that I did not mind. The other customers inside were friendly but not awkward, especially for us being the only 2 women in there at the moment the bartender was super friendly and they had a nice selection of local brews from the area. My wife ordered a peanut butter and jelly beer from the Knoxville TN area as her 2nd drink. PB & J beer doesn't sound so appealing but OMG it was phenomenal. It was the perfect balance and tasted like a PB&J liquid sandwich. Honestly I can wait until I find some in the store nearby. This is a nice, no frills, friendly stop yo grab a drink in Bristol.
