SLUM LORDS - Since being taken over by Aboreal Management, the building has gone downhill fast. It's filthy, poorly maintained, and nothing ever gets fixed. The property manager is unresponsive and full of excuses. I've lived at Stockbridge 15 glorious years. Unfortunately, the property was sold last Aug/Sep 2025 and has gone downhill at record speed. The building was previously managed by Epic and is now managed by Aboreal which is an absolutely horrible management company. Since Aboreal took over, the outside call box that was working, has since not worked in the last six to eight months and has not been repaired. Several tenants have asked management to prioritize the repair since none of us are able to get anything delivered to us if we are not available to let delivery person into the building. Back security door is broken and makes a loud noise when closing and I have found it not fully closed which poses a safety risk. The back alley garage area is a mess for the first time in all my years living in the building, I don't know if it's tenants or random people just dumping. "DO NOT MOVE HERE" It's not what it used to be. read more

Seattle has its share of new apartment buildings, advertising spacious outdoor decks, modern clean lines, and new appliances. What they forget to add is how tiny the living spaces really are; the cheap building materials used to construct them and the high rent charged for breadbox-sized living quarters. Stockbridge is an older building with the charm of hardwood floors, generous windows, with art deco details reflected in the lobby and throughout the building. We've lived here for many years and can't imagine living anywhere else. We don't own a car but really don't need one for day-to-day life. We walk pretty much everywhere, Pike Place Market, Seattle University, Capital Hill Farmer's Market, etc. If we need a car, there are several Zip car locations nearby. Janelle and Paulo are available and helpful. They keep the building clean and stylish (I personally love the small details like flowers in the lobby and tasteful holiday decorations). It's obvious they both work to create a safe and friendly atmosphere. Although Boren can be noisy, we wouldn't give up the personal time saved by living at Stockbridge than sitting in Seattle traffic, waiting sometimes for hours to get home. read more

It was good until the end. My boyfriend and I moved here to be close to Capitol Hill, in terms of distance it was pretty good - close to restaurants, ~8 minutes to the grocery store, and ~12 minutes to the nearest light rail station. Over the year we had some small nuisances, such as smelling cigarettes and weed (management posted reminders), maintenance with a few days notice (they shut down the water for more than 12 hours once), washer and dryer machines repeatedly under maintenance, and occasional loud neighbors. Other than that, management was sweet at remembering birthdays. It was good if you enjoy Capitol Hill and it is affordable compared to nearby apartments. The rent increased by 100 when we were leaving. The problem was the 400 deposit. We only received 25 dollars back, which was shocking because we never wore shoes indoors, and we had vacuumed and cleaned before we left. They charged us 125 for cleaning (fan, blinds, floors, cabinets, etc. were marked dirty - though we did forget to clear out the freezer, 125 is still excessive) and 250 for repainting (we couldn't get one an oil stain off the kitchen wall, but we were charged for all rooms, including the closet). When we looked at other reviews on ApartmentRatings, our situation was certainly not isolated. Nowhere in the lease did it mention that tenants were responsible for repainting charges. We did notice that they do a quick job of repainting without sanding, so a few of our books on the built-in shelves were damaged because the paint tried sticking onto them. read more

I lived here a long time ago, and the building itself is actually pretty neat. I like the old feel to it, and the walls are thicker than most apartment buildings so you don't always hear every last thing that your neighbor is doing. At the time I lived at these apartments, the manager and his wife were very kind, knew everyone, everyone was friendly to each other even if we didn't know each other, but not up in your business, either. Looking at the photos, I see that not much has changed. In fact, the very first photo that you see in their gallery is the apartment that I lived in on the 6th floor. They show a few more photos (map and outside) and then another couple of shots of a studio - which is again, the same as the first photo, and the very apartment that I lived in. Not one thing has changed in that apartment since I lived there with exception of new flooring and a paint job. Everything else, even the kitchen cupboards, all looks exactly the same as it was more than a decade ago. Obviously rent is going to increase over time, but I have to say that I am shocked by how much they are charging for these units. Yes, they are decent sized studios, and the location is great (except for all the traffic on Boren Ave), but you have got to be kidding me with what they are asking for these units. When I lived there, these were sensibly priced. You could make minimum wage (as someone just starting out in life, going to college, etc (just as I did), and still afford to live here. Not now. The old manager and his wife are no longer there, and one of the reasons I moved out was because a new manager came in, and the "community" feel to the whole place just went right out the window. In addition, they started to raise the rent far too often, every six months they would raise it while doing nothing different to it. Some apartments have new appliances, according to the photos, but overall, the lobby, the laundry room, the hallways, the apartments themselves have not changed drastically enough to warrant that sticker price. What a shame that they have become greedy now. Too bad. I have fond memories of the place. read more

I've been living at Stockbridge for the last year and I love it. The manager Janelle is really helpful and friendly. She has truly put an effort to get to know me and my dog, and I can tell she loves managing the building. The maintenance guy, Paulo is also very helpful and friendly. He's always been on top of any issue that may come up The building is well maintained, the lobby is always decorated tor the holidays and there's always fresh coffee around. I love my apartment, it's a good sized studio with new upgrades. It's hard to find nice hardwoods that are still original. If you're looking for a reasonable priced studio or one bedroom in the heart of Seattle, look no further! read more

I've been living here for over two years now and I can't imagine leaving. It ticks nearly all my boxes: an affordable studio with character, in an incredible walkable location, with affable management to boot. The Stockbridge isn't a new building advertising its "luxury apartments" with a pool, dog washing station, and space for entertaining guests. Instead, the well-maintained converted 1920's hotel affords you details like milk delivery boxes and original mailboxes. All at much more reasonable price than you'd find in a newer, larger building (cough Panorama cough). Although I have a car and that parking can be troublesome it is worth it because I'll never live in as walkable a location. From here it's a quick walk to West Lake Light Rail (10 min), Cal Park (13 min), Pike Place (17 min), the Amazon Spheres (16 min), and all food and night life that Cap Hill has to offer. Dog-friendliness is another big perk, there's no breed restrictions or weight limit. Nice grass outside the building and an off-leash dog park two blocks away. The best part of every dog's day is their chance to say hello to Paolo, the building's maintenance man. Downside: Woe is you if you need to leave before your contract is up. No subletting/lease takeovers and breaking a lease early will cost you a month of rent plus your security deposit. So, either your moving timeline lines up exactly with the end of your lease or you pay $3000+. Also, any common space would be great. Similar buildings nearby have patios (Oxford Crest). This would add a lot to Stockbridge's value. read more

Seriously the most charming, welcoming, and beautifully maintained building in First Hill and Capitol Hill. I lived here seven years (my first apartment in Seattle as a newly independent 20-something), and then bought a condo in Eastlake. I never stopped missing the Stockbridge, so less than 4 years later I sold the condo and moved back into the Stockbridge! The BEST part of this building is Janelle and I was absolutely thrilled she was still here. Best building manager EVER. She really cares, makes the building and every unit feel like home with her hard work and special touch, is super on top of everything, brings positive energy, and is amazing at making the Stockbridge the classic gem that it is! I also adore Paulo the maintenance man, who's very speedy and equally delightful. When I saw them both greet me in the lobby my first day back I truly felt home. I'm a Stockbridge lifer as long as they're here. read more

Seattle is famous for steep hills and trying to navigate them on foot during snowy conditions can be treacherous. Stockbridge Apartments was the only property on Boren Avenue with shoveled sidewalks. Janelle and Paulo really care about keeping tenants safe! They are amazing! read more

I have been living at the Stockbridge since 2012, and while I have the means to live at some of the more modern apartments in the middle of downtown, I feel no urge to move. The Stockbridge is an antique building dating from the mid-1920's, and for a building so old, it has really held together well. Of course, sometimes the age of the building shows, but the property managers have done a great job of keeping it looking more like a refurbished classic icon rather than letting the building fall apart. Its structure is also very, very solid (surprisingly for a brick and mortar building). When I first moved, I lived in a studio on the 5th floor. It was extremely spacious for the amount of rent paid (I have friends who lived in smaller studios for the same price per month). It included hardwood flooring, a very nicely sized kitchen, spacious walk-in closet (could have also substituted as a 1/2-size bedroom), and a gorgeous view of part of downtown and Queen Anne (facing north). It was perfect for a bachelor working downtown. Around June 2013, my girlfriend and I decided to move in together, and a 1 bedroom was available. The manager at the time was more than happy to let us do a transfer midway through our lease. The 1-bedroom is very spacious, and more than perfect for 2 people. Walls in all of the units are quite thick so that when neighbors are loud, it generally comes through very muffled. Apartment management is quite exceptional, and the management company (Epic) seems to take great care in selecting the right personalities for the job. Our current manager has been here only for about 2 months at the time of this review, and he is a terrific fellow. Both managers I've been under seem to have a genuine interest in getting to know their tenants, which is not something you see all-too-often. The maintenance man, Dave, is a kind-hearted and good-spirited guy that deserves all the recognition in the world. He is the one keeping the building going, and he takes immense pride in his work, which he does extremely efficiently. I've never had to be concerned letting him into my apartment while I'm not there to perform maintenance. All-in-all, the Stockbridge is conveniently located right on the border of downtown and Capitol Hill/First Hill, so it is a premium location for anyone working in any of those neighborhoods. Being that it's on Boren Avenue, which is shared by about 3 major hospitals up further up the street, the ambulances driving up and down the road with sirens blaring do take some getting used to. Thankfully a lot of the ambulance drivers turn off their sirens during the night hours, but it will take a few months to get used to the noise and be able to sleep through it when they don't. My only real complaint about the Stockbridge is that it is lacking in a lot of amenities that are offered at some other apartments for a few hundred dollars more a month. 1st floor laundry can be a pain, along with the lack of dishwashers in the units, an exercise room, and any place to hang out in the summer months like a rooftop or courtyard grilling area. However, at a lot of those places, you lose out on the charm that the Stockbridge has, and a very cozy feel for one of the more fond memories I'll be taking with me from the city when I eventually leave; but I don't see myself doing that anytime soon. read more

I'm going to miss my spacious little apartment and the credit card operated laundry room. I lived here for about 9 months and only moved because I got an incredible deal on a condo. Had I not purchased I would have stayed here as long as rent was reasonable. My place was only 403 square feet but its layout made it feel huge, almost like my nearly 700 square foot 1920s apartment I had in college. It had a big walk in closet that fit up to a full size bed, a large living room with beautiful built in window seats and shelving (my cat was a fan) and a nice sized kitchen with full size appliances and plenty of storage. My apartment was not remodeled but there are remodeled units in the building with dishwashers for more $$. I don't know what's considered expensive anymore. I paid $1285 and this might be expensive but I was a 10 minute walk from Pike Place Market or Broadway, or a bus anywhere. I don't regret not living in a cheaper apartment elsewhere in town. Anyone who ever is looking to move close to downtown and doesn't need a place with modernities, I highly recommend this property. read more

Lived here for a year when I first moved to Seattle. The management staff was pretty nice and were quick to get me approved for a studio apartment. The apartment itself was pretty huge for a studio. The walls were pretty thick and you couldn't hear your neighbors (beauty of older construction buildings!) Very convenient location to downtown and to Cap Hill areas! I lived in Seattle for a full year with no car when I lived here until I got a job out of town and had to move. Really enjoyed the access this apartment provided to shopping and to nightlife. A huge bus terminal was not far away either. Only cons were that it was a little pricey compared to other properties in the area. (but still reasonable considering the location), and that there was quite a bit of street noise from drunk people partying or ambulances. I didn't sleep well for the first month or so, but once I got used to it, it was just fine. Also, if you have a car - good luck parking on the street in the area - ti's tough! Would def. rec this place to a friend! 3.5 stars read more

Just moved in a few months ago, but so far I'm loving my new apartment more than any I've had in the past. I love the layout (my huge closet is amazing and the small kitchen is perfect for me), and having the rent payable online is awesome. In addition the management is incredibly responsive and does a good job. The only complaint I have is that while the walls seem to be relatively sound-dampening, the hallway door is thin as anything and you can hear anything that happens in the hallway. And I'm assuming the hallway can hear anything happening near the door. All in all, I'm very happy. I'll add more after 6 mo to a year. read more

We lived here for three years. The time was okay, but very far from ideal. Our move-in was a disaster as the then-manager was several hours late. We were left with a moving truck, movers, and no keys or access to the apartment unit or the building itself. When the manager changed she was much more present and available, but for some reason we never meshed well and it made the living experience very uncomfortable. We had a very small unit facing Union Street and the ambulances and traffic that zoom up and down Boren Ave. plus the juvenile and frat-like commotions from across the street made for a very noisy apartment, day or night. The unit itself was beyond outdated and had a kitchen that was almost useless, especially if you like cooking. We noticed at move-in and after move-out that the building also has a very 'old' smell that permeates your clothing and fabrics. We had to wash everything a few times to get rid of that smell. The building is dark and almost claustrophobic; as a writer, and someone home a lot, I can attest the carpets were very rarely if ever vacuumed and old (though they were professionally cleaned once in those three years) so we tracked dog hair and other dirt into your apartment very easily and in high quantity; the hallways are like something you would see in The Shining; the elevator is one of the slowest on the planet; there are virtually no amenities, unless you consider an outdated and shared laundry room an amenity; the building is structurally in need of serious retrofitting to comply with earthquake standards, so I never felt safe there, especially with the gigantic crack across our studio wall that seemed to get worse as the years went by; the front entry has two sets of doors, one that opens freely the other you need a key, resulting in a free urinal to homeless or drunk people; our walls were thin making it so we could hear entire conversations and other activities of our neighbors. Our move-out was also far from ideal. But not worth discussing. In fairness, a lot of the issues were ignorable and we were able to live life just fine there for a while, although not without chagrin. I loved the hardwood floors and some of the other original details were charming. Ultimately we left when the rental increases became too unreasonable (by the hundreds per-lease resigning) with little to show for it and a manager that created an unwelcoming atmosphere for my Husband and I. read more

While I am moving out to a different area of the city, I am going to dearly miss my adorable studio at the Stockbridge. The building is awesome and exceptionally well maintained, my studio was perfect size with tons of light (and incredibly sound proof - if I hadn't seen my neighbors in the hall I'd swear they didn't exist), and the leasing manager is the best. Seriously, that guy deserves a raise. He's gone above and beyond many times over and does so with a smile. The building is walking distance to basically everything you could need. Street parking can be a bit of a gamble sometimes, but that's the hill for ya. Overall, I have zero complaints about my time here. read more

I have moved at least once a year for the last ten years because of being in a contract job. This is hands down my favorite apartment I've ever lived in and would love to stay. My apartment has an incredible amount of Natural light, hardwood floors, a full length mirror,a great shower, a perfectly roomy Walk in Closet, and plenty of storage in the beautiful kitchen. Its all I've wanted. One of the greatest things about it is that it actually feels like a home with the attention to details and not one of these modern Plywood, plastic expensive apartments. The management and mechanic is as friendly as can be and I find this to be one of the most comforting parts of this apartment complex. Its pet friendly and all the pets here are friendly back. Once you walk in to the main hall, it will be hard to look for any other apartments. I've spent hours multiple years looking for a place and this is it. read more

A great, affordable studio I lived in the Stockbridge for about a year, and am now moving out to live with a friend (two bedrooms are a great deal in Seattle). All in all, it's an excellent apartment Location - Really can't be beat. A short walk to Cap Hill, Pike's Place, and South Lake Union - it's central and terrific. Management - The property manager is excellent. Super nice guy - always responsive, willing to go the extra mile to get packages to you, and so forth. Maintenance is also very responsive, nice, and effective! The Unit - My studio had a HUGE walk in closet. Hardwood floors are also a big plus. Much bigger and nicer (and cheaper!) than a lot of my friends apartments. Love these studios - great bachelor pad. Got some nice modern furniture and went for the minimalist look - looked great! Cons - Only cons are expected. 1st floor laundry is a bit of a pain, and having no dishwasher isn't bad but a dishwasher would certainly be nice. Also no real common area as other reviewers have said. Bottom-line, if you want an affordable real nice place to start your time in Seattle in a great location, go Stockbridge. If you have no friends, don't expect to meet anyone and solely want to meet others in your building to make friends, you might want to try somewhere else. Oh - and it's in an RZP zone - meaning you can get a pass from the city for $30ish a year to park on the street! Hard to find a spot at night sometimes but an awesome deal! Almost none of my friends are in neighborhoods with this added benefit. read more
