I called Excalibur and they said this wasn't true. They could install a similar model of tankless water heater to the one I had. Their quote was almost $2000 less than the other plumber. I since had an HVAC company come out for something else and mentioned I had to change the heater recently. I told him what I paid and he said that was honestly a good price. Excalibur seemed honest and helpful and they were able to come out first thing the next morning and get my heater replaced. They did a good job and the new unit looks better installed than the original. They also gave me advice on how to maintain it and what maintenance I could do myself to descale it etc so it doesn't break again. Overall happy either way the service even though overall it was expensive it was still less than other quotes I got.

For example : He said it would tak $600 to fix, and when I asked him how much to just replace the toilet, he said $1300. Money is tight, and he showed no empathy in that regard. He told me he would need to be paid immediately, rather than sending me an invoice. And he was not friendly, or particulary sympathic to the cost I may be facing. He said he had to pull out the toilet to repair it, and the labor of that and replacing it would be a lot of money. I let him go, and called Advanced plumbing. They were here in a matter of hours (vs the two day wait from Discount) , came and fixed the problem without pulling out the toilet, to a total charge of $300. I've learned over time that a lot of these guys are trying to scam you and run up the bill. My advice is to shop around, and certainly don't deal with a serviceman who is less than professional, trying to increase your spending, and generally gives you a bad impression. Obviously, Discount plumbine (a misnomer) is off my list.

Theirs came in at a very reasonable rate, and most importantly, they had capacity to start as soon as possible because we had an urgent sewer line failure. When I called, I believe I came into contact with the owner. I explained to him the scope of the job, and I even told him that he probably doesn't need to send a plumber out because, at this point, we are just comparing costs and I even hinted that we were desperate to get started as soon as possible based on what was told to us by the other plumbers that came out. The owner told me that he'd send a plumber out anyway to do their own scope, since other plumbers may have not been consistent, he could have very easily taken advantage of my desperation in this time, but he didn't David was the only plumber out of the many bids we got who actually called us out and showed us what was on the camera, and explained to us what was happening underneath our house. Within 24 hours, he got the quote back to us. Again, he knew it was an emergency, so the turnaround was great! He came out with a nicely staffed crew. Within a few days, our floor was jackhammered, there was a mound of dirt in our garage, and within the next few days, they connected our sewer line, so we were only without water for a few hours at most. The sewer line installation passed city inspection (SF) the first time. the dirt was quickly backfilled, with concrete poured on top. From a little over a week to the initial consultation, we had a perfectly working sewer line, and we were able to park in our driveway. they were very neat after they completed their job, and they even cleaned out our garage where all the backfill dirt was being stored. Hired Water Heaters Only to replace a water heater in Hayward. Often the truest test of a quality…read morebusiness is how they perform when things do not go well. In my case, I have quite a story of having to go five days without hot water because the unit I received was defective. The day after the install we found the tank had shut down. After a reset and restart done over the phone with the installer assisting, the unit failed again, a short time later. The next day which was a Saturday, another technician came out to swap out a heat sensor which appeared to be the problem. While changing out the part, the tech noticed that insulation near the assembly had burned, and ash was present. He vacuumed it out and restarted the unit. It made a horrible noise, and he spent a half an hour on the phone with the manufacturer tech support trying to diagnose the problem. The noise eventually went away and he finished the repair. Unfortunately the machine shut down again after we got one warm shower. I called on Sunday, and explained that I was no longer comfortable with the unit being in our house and I wanted a replacement, of a different maker. Without hesitation they agreed, and Monday morning, after acquiring a, more expensive model of a different make from a supplier, we got a replacement installed, at no additional cost. These problems are rare, and not the fault of the installer. I could not have asked for a more timely and considerate treatment as a valued customer of this business.

UPDATE: Following my…read moreoriginal post, General Manager David reached out early the next morning to understand what went wrong. He promptly dispatched a supervisor, Steve, to inspect the unit. Steve went above and beyond from the start, successfully reigniting the failed water heater and troubleshooting the permit issue. The inspection issue was due to the local code requiring runoff to be routed outside rather than into the crawl space. Wanting to avoid drilling through my front porch, Steve proposed using a workaround device (FloodStop or Watts 210) and proactively reached out to the city inspector for approval. Once the inspector confirmed that a Watts 210 valve met code, David coordinated a return visit for Steve to replace the unit with a Bradford White model and install the approved valve. Steve did a beautiful job with the new installation, expertly redoing the piping and leaving the indoor cabinet completely clean. Best of all, I can finally take a hot shower without worrying that the water heater is going to die on me! I want to extend a sincere thank you to David for listening to my concerns and focusing on a real solution, and to Steve for his outstanding expertise, proactive communication with the city, and top-notch craftsmanship. All the fixes, including additional parts and labor, were provided at no extra charge. While the initial experience was stressful, the management team truly stepped up to make things right.

It only occurred when the weather was hot. Basically, only summer afternoons. We had PG&E come out repeatedly and they could not find the source. We spoke with plumbers and other heater repair companies. All of them told us that it was not our heater; that we were wrong about the inconsistency of the smell. That gas leaks are only consistent and would not happen only when it was hot. We were told that we must be wrong. We felt like we were going crazy. Until we called Bay Area Water Heaters and Dave came out (with a whole crew). He took the time to inspect our heater and said yes, this slight gas smell on hot days is something he had heard of. It was likely due to an old valve within the control panel. He walked us through our options but ultimately suggested replacing the entire heater. His team was able to do the job right then and there and at a reasonable rate. It was completed within the hour. And sure enough, no more gas smell in our garage. Dave and his team were amazing and incredibly professional. We will be using this company again.

I understand that cancellations impact a schedule, so I remained completely calm and polite throughout the conversation and paid their full cancellation fee immediately without hesitation or dispute. Despite complying with their policy right away, the owner became hostile. He lost his temper, raised his voice, and berated me for how much the cancellation hurt his business. A cancellation fee is meant to cover lost time--it is not a license to yell at and lecture paying customers who are speaking respectfully. Handling ordinary business interactions with this level of aggression and emotional volatility is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise against dealing with an owner who treats customers this way.
