Stew and his whole team at RPM were so helpful and extremely responsive from the first day we walked in the door saying "Uhh...we...think we want to start looking to buy a house...how does this all work?" up until the day we closed. Stew, specifically, seems to have a real passion for this type of work and was always willing to explain things (sometimes a couple different times) and work through different loan scenarios with us. RPM Mortgage was recommended to us by a friend who was adamant that who you use as a mortgage broker when buying a house, particularly in this bonkers housing market, really matters and can even make a real difference in the strength of your offers. I recently used this mortgage company for a condo I purchased with my wife and sister in law. None of us were in the market and we kind of stumbled on our dream home and decided to buy it. We were not pre-approved and had to scramble to get our financing in order. We used RPM on the recommendation of our real estate agent. Monica Di Perna was our assigned mortgage broker. After submitting all of our paperwork to Monica, we asked about receiving a better interest rate than the one she quoted. My brother in law recently purchased a home and said his mortgage broker could get us a better rate. Monica replied that if she saw another mortgage broker running our credit, she would stop her team from working on our application and her company would not give us a loan. Because of our last minute decision to buy a home and the time that had passed since submitting our application to RPM, we could not afford to take the chance of RPM dropping our application. I felt that Monica took advantage of us in this situation. She knew we were in a time crunch and thoroughly exploited it. When we purchased our home using RPM, my wife and I owned a property as did my sister in law. We each sold our properties shortly after this purchase and used the money to refinance with a different lender. During the refinance, we were contacted by Stew Sweet - the branch manager of RPM. He received a request for documentation from our new lender. He reached out to us stating that he and his team would lose the compensation they received on our loan as a penalty from the bank. Apparently this happens if your loan is open less than 6 months. Stew informed us that our loan could be "recast" as opposed to refinanced. This option meant that we would have kept our same interest rate. This would have cost us tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. When Stew reached out to us, we informed him of Monica's behavior. He was very apologetic and stated he would speak with her. We informed Stew that we had made it known to Monica we each owned a house and would be selling it shortly after our new home purchase. Why this wasn't taken into consideration prior to receiving our loan is still unclear. To Stew's credit he did offer us a free refinance. However, he attempted to have us recast our loan rather than refinance with a different lender so that he and his team would receive their compensation while we would be out tens of thousands of dollars. I found this to be unprofessional and unethical. I am shocked that a mortgage broker would behave this way. Steer clear of these people. read more

Stew made the mortgage side of my home buying experience so much easier than it would have been with anyone else. He found money for me that no one else knew existed. He listened to me when I told him how much money I had to work with for the sale, and he worked some serious mortgage magic, allowing me to close with cash to spare. He was so easy to work with, always very responsive, and worked into the night several times on my behalf. Stew doesn't really need another review but I think I need to leave one, for myself. We met Stew at a home buying info session, he was just there to answer initial questions about financing. He was knowledgeable and patient, and had some great ideas. When we found our real estate team (Locally Real- Red Oak), we mentioned meeting and being impressed with Stew to them and one of the agents said she had actually just used him for her own home and had a great experience. Still cautious, we ran our numbers by several other recommendations. While most people knew their stuff, Stew was responsive, respectful, and complete in his replies in ways that other brokers did not even compare. When we were ready to start putting down offers, this is when this responsiveness really matters. We put down several offers back to back within a matter of days/weeks (it's a tough market ya'll), and he always had our next letter ready with individual recommendations for each house/market. Reading the comments published by the other makes me think that they maybe friends or relatives of Stew, as I had a totally different experience with him and the company. First, it took them a long time between the ermail and it just seemed like they do not care. They were very "Salesman" type and positive at the beginning, but after they charged me a substantial amount of money for an appraisal and having me wait for over TWO months for getting an answer of "sorry but...". I do not know why these incompetent people opened an office in Berkeley, they just create a bad reputation for mortgage professionals, just go back to your village in the 925 area code. read more

Initially, I was drawn to some of the "no-cost" refinance advertisements, but I did my due diligence to of course be reminded that nothing is free. Stew, Monica and their crew made my loan process painless and quick. They are professionals in every sense of the word.
