I came into this shop a few months ago because I had several lights on my dash and needed an oil change. They said they would fix the issue the best they could, and the scan of the car said I needed a new cam shaft solenoid. The scan itself was $125?! Over $1,000 later and all my lights were still on, and the owner says not to worry. 3 months and only 1500 miles later, my car is in need of ANOTHER oil change. When an honest mechanic checked out the car, they could not tell that any work had been done, and are having to replace the part again since it spit out the same code. Difference is, they are only charging me under $200 with labor included, and will negate it if that turns out not to be the issue. Steve's wants your money, they have no interest in how well your car runs when you leave. Don't go here for any reason. I live in south LA and still consider Steve's Express my primary auto shop. Everything about this place is top-notch. The customer service is impeccable. Yes, I just used the word impeccable. I first came here on the recommendation of a great friend and have been taken care of on each subsequent visit. They've came through for me and my friends time and time again -- from quick oil changes to diagnosing odd problems to quickly fixing a nail-in-tire problem as a group of us were leaving for a conference (for free if I remember correctly). There aren't too many auto shops left on this planet that are as honest and reliable as this one. I don't care how car illiterate you are, they will not take advantage of you here. That's why they've managed to stay in business as long as they have. I've always sent every person I know in the valley to this shop, and still will. Apparently the new guy is an Armenian guy named Tony. 100% shady mechanic. I sadly had my catalytic converter stolen recently, took it here to figure out which one (there were two) and what hardware needed to replace. Came back and this guy couldn't even tell me which one and charged me just for diagnosing SMH. Checked the recorder I had later on too, they didn't even put it on the lift. He did everything but tell the truth. He kept pushing how they can order a new one for me for $2k+. They are $1k online. I gave him an out and he kept lying thru his teeth changing the subject. I only went in to do a basic oil change and the mechanic started telling me all this stuff that needed to be fixed. I had just taken my car to a trusted mechanic to get routine maintenance check, so I know for a fact what he was telling me was already checked. Thats not my biggest issue. They used a cheap, off-brand oil rather than a good full synthetic brand. Anyways, a month passes and I get another oil change from another mechanic and he tells me that whoever did my oil change here overflowed my oil tank. Honesty and righteousness are the two things I search for most in a place I'm going to trust with my car. The staff is very knowledgeable and you can tell that they aren't there to string you along for the ride- going on about products and services your car needs that aren't even necessary or giving you false information. It's a sad truth that most mechanic/car service stations prosper on business centered on taking advantage of customers...but you wont find that here. Suspicion of them swapping parts in my car. Hustled me for a higher price then they originally asked. Took them 3 days to apparently replace one part. Evidence of tampering with the bolts on my engine when no service for that was requested. And the part they replaced had broken in less than 3 months of them installing it!! This place has kept going downhill ever since new management came in, they really should change their name since Steve doesn't even work there anymore. Payed a premium price for a part I had to replace again less than 3 months later, went to another mechanic and the experience was ten fold comparatively. read more

Warning!!! Avoid this place. I took my car to Steve's to get my axle fixed and to fix my check engine light. While I was waiting I noticed that the guy that was working on my car was banging with a long metal wrench on the opposite axle that did not need work. WTF!!! And on top of that he said all I needed was to replace a broken gas cap and two weeks later my check engine light is back on. Steve's does great work, fast and friendly. I use them often, as they are walking distance from home. I was a certified auto mechanic for years after my discharge from the army and while going to college, and have always performed the work on my own vehicles, however, I no longer have the time or space to do so, and have been using local and near local shops for servicing of my cars for the past ten years or so. I recently had $2000 worth of work done to my wife's 2000 Toyota 4 Runner, as it will turn 200,000 miles in less than 900 miles. Services included brakes/rotors/drums all around, timing belt/water pump, tune up, plugs, wires, and all fluids and filters. Car was done in less than two days. I went to the shop to pick it up, and the rear drum brakes shoes had not been adjusted. (the parking brake lever pulled up to the stop) Per usual, the mechanic was friendly and cooperative, jacked the car up in the parking lot, adjusted the shoes, and after I took the car around the block, I brought it back and he readjusted them a second time. One of the jobs, the tune-up was done especially well. The car for the last 3000 miles has exhibited bucking and surging on kick-down acceleration. When I took the car for the test drive, and mashed the pedal to the floor, the response was immediate, smooth and with good power. Job done. Overall the work from Steve's is better than most. The guys know what they are doing, but I do have a few complaints, which I made known to Nelson. First, the car was returned filthy, the top of the front quarter panels were smudged black with greasy hand prints, the driver's inside armrest was black from greasy hands, and the interior is cloth, so it is not easy to clean. Same with the four wheels, the rims were smudged, and when I grabbed the driver's handle, it too left my hand black with grime. Second, the timing belt kit usually comes with a label that is applied to the top of the belt cover that is marked to indicate the date of the change, and mileage. Instead of replacing the grungy old label, the mechanic just took a marker and wrote 90,000 miles on it. (Recommended renewal interval is around 60,000 miles on the 4 Runner, BTW. The belt is usually not an issue, but if it goes, it will lunch the engine. Better to be safe than sorry.) Simply indicating the next time the belt is to be replaced in miles is useless, without knowing when and at what mileage it was last done. I asked for and received the old parts, except for the brake drums, rotors, pads and shoes. Always ask for the old parts, I specifically asked Nelson for them when I authorized the work, but the mechanic binned the brake bits anyway. Not a big deal, it is easy to see the new discs/pads and drums/shoes were replaced, A top tip: If possible, take a sharpie and mark the parts you know they are going to replace, that way when you are handed the box of old parts, you will know they are yours. I am not insinuating Steve's is dishonest in any way, at no time has this been an issue for me, it just give you peace of mind, knowing you can trust them. I know they are busy, but a little more attention to cleanup and detail would be appreciated. I always returned anything I worked on to the customer cleaner than when I received it. I recommend you take your car for a test ride, and look it over carefully when you pick it up, make sure it is wiped down and presentable. Don't be intimidated, if something is not right speak up, push back until you are satisfied. Great service from Art and the other mechanics! Took a used Mazda 3 in for a pre-purchase inspection and they had me in and out in no more than 90 minutes. I trusted their opinion because of their 5 stars on yelp and they are the cheapest option around for a pre-purchase inspection at only $30. Other places charge $75+ for the same service. After I left I even called them back three times with follow up questions regarding the rust they found under the car, and they were always happy to keep answering them. I searched for quality car shops in the Northridge area and ultimately decided to bring my car to Steve's Express because of the high reviews. I was extremely pleased by the professionalism and service by Art and his team! My car was leaking what I initially believed to be engine oil, so I asked Art to check it out and provide the necessary repairs after I dropped it off around 8:30am. It was a busy day with five cars already in line in front of me, but they moved fast and my car was up after a couple of hours. Within minutes, Art and another member of the team determined that the leak was my transmission fluid, so they tightened the valve and topped off the fluid for me. I expected to have to pay for the work (even though it was a quick diagnosis and fix), but I wasn't charged and it was completely free. I'm really thankful for their honesty and kindness, especially when I easily could have seen another mechanic charging for labor and unnecessary parts. To make the experience better, Art also allowed me to take a look at the leak and valve for myself. I'll have to monitor the leak to see if the valve tightening solved the issue for good, but I know it's rare to find a business like this. I'll definitely be coming back here next time for future work. Some additional positives about this place: indoor and outdoor seating while you wait, magazines to read and television to watch if you have nothing else to do, bathroom inside, Starbucks within walking distance. read more

On 01/25/19, I brought my vehicle in due to a noise coming from the rear wheels and rear suspension. Nelson, told me they'd check for these problems. Nelson called me later that day and told me that the right rear and left rear hub bearing needed replacement. He also told me that my shocks needed replacement. I trusted what he had said because I'm not a mechanic. The sound from the rear of my car has not changed over the last 2 months. I do not believe my shocks needed replacing. I'm not certain the hub bearings needed replacing. In checking on the pricing for the shocks (KYB), I was charged 4 to 5xs the value of them sold online by reputable car part websites. The hub bearings were charged at more than twice its value too comparing it to other reputable online car parts sights. Add in the labor and I was taken at the cost of $858.30. I was not shown the alleged worn out parts upon picking up my vehicle by Nelson. Steve's Express offers 12 month, 12K mile warranties for all of its work. However, I'm very disappointed in them and guarded for my car to even be touched by them again. I previously had positive experiences with their work. read more

I was having problems with my car. Turned out to be the transmission. Steve's sent me to a GREAT transmission shop that was honest and great at what they did. I've since been back to Steve's for brake pads. I walked in around 12 and they were able to get my brake pads done before 3.
