i wish i could subtract stars. I've had Steve work on my car a few times as I work directly across the street. He seemed an affable enough guy, even though the repair work was mostly spotty. I decided to give him one last try on an easy fix, which was the radio in my Monte Carlo. After evaluating it, he told me it was the amplifier. He looked up a few options, and called and recommended the amp be worked on by a third party friend of his. I reminded him that I didn't want to sink alot of money into it, but went by his recommendation. 3 weeks (!) later, he claimed that they couldn't fix the amp. I told him i'd just take my car to a Best Buy or something, and the next day the amp miraculously came back "fixed" to the tune of $140. I thought that seemed like a lot, and he said he had 2 electricians in to look at it and work on it. I considered that a lot as you can buy an aftermarket amp for $50 to $100 anywhere, but i bit my tongue. After reinstalling the amp, he said the radio was broken and offered me options to replace it to the tune of roughly $150 to $200. I said no thanks and took my car to Best Buy. A 5 minute look at my car told the Best Buy guy that my amp was still broken but my radio was fine. He wired directly from the preamped radio to the speakers in 20 minutes and charged me $100. It works great now.
So i went back to Steve. I very politely explained to him that the amp I paid him to have fixed was broken and the radio was fine. He didn't seem to understand why I would be a little frustrated with him and was defensive. I explained what the Best Buy guy did and he didn't believe me, and refused to refund my money. He didn't seem to understand that if I'd listened to him and replaced the functional radio for $200 at his recommendation, it still wouldn't have worked. No amount of discussion would make him refund anything. Excuses range from, "Well, it's hard to fix" and "I never said I was a Chevy mechanic" to "If a doctor failed to save your life, you still have to pay him." When challenged, he quickly started name calling and said I could sue him if I wanted. "Childish" was my favorite of what he called me.
There is no way I would ever let him touch my car again. I wish I had the time to sit outside and tell people not to use his business. He's the worst repair man I've ever heard of. Even my neighborhood guy where I used to live who would work on your car for a case of beer was more trustworthy and reliable. If my car was on fire directly outside his shop and he were the only one with an extinguisher, I wouldn't let him apply that tool to my car. Horrible ethics, terrible human, utter waste of time.
