He is everything you would want in a handyman. And how hard it is to find someone like that now a days... I have hired many contractors and he is certainly one of the best I have ever came across. First time I have ever witnessed a handyman (or anyone for that matter) whipping out an UV light thingamajig to observe the details of his painting job. I don't even know what that tool is called. It looked like a mini lightsaber. I can safely refer him to my Japanese friends in Greater Boston area, which really says something.

For our latest…read moreproject, we needed to increase the functionality of a small nook in our Cambridge condo, which was serving as a book shelving-cat feeding-cat litterbox-storage area. Ed worked with us to design and build beautiful built in bookshelves and cabinets that perfectly fit the space (with all of its uneven surfaces!), and even included a custom litter box space for our discerning felines. He also adjusted the electrical outline to accommodate the new built-ins, and, with a newborn in the house, we appreciated that he did as much work as possible ahead of time! We would trust him, and his design recommendations, for any future project. We keep staring at the bookshelves, saying to each other how great they look!

Billy was SO accommodating and was able to come just two days after contacting him to do an inspection on my future home. He was so responsiveness immediately even before meeting him and throughout the whole inspection, he clearly and thoroughly explained what he was doing, looking for, why it was important and what it meant for me as a future homeowner. Any questions that I had, he answered openly, provided pros and cons and helped me think realistically about future projects, ROI and general impact. I truly cannot say enough incredible things about how helpful and educational he was, especially me being a first-time homebuyer. I am beyond grateful I picked him and you will be too! His pricing was extremely reasonable, under market value and he was so friendly and made the experience enjoyable and fun! We all had a really nice time learning from him and simply having his company. Will definitely be using him to consult on future projects. Thank you thank you thank you, Billy!

What was a three bedroom morphed into a place to dump our things (old things, new things, things we didn't want or need, things that we outgrew. Clothes that NO LONGER FIT, clothes that I never wore, etc. I hated what happened to our home. I never would invite people over. I was embarrassed with how in almost 8 years I made my home turn into a place I didn't even want people to see. Every time I opened the door to these two rooms I had a feeling of sadness. I let myself down. I was happy to learn of Judy's services and made an appointment with her and she came over and for three hours helped me declutter. She went through closets, drawers, all the stuff on the floors! She ended up making my home a real home. I am enjoying my two new rooms. One is slowly becoming a room for me to do my home yoga and meditation and the other room is my partner's man cave. Only it's not a cave, it's clean and happy and useful. Judy was really helpful and very nice and I didn't feel judged or embarrassed at all. I have kept these rooms clear and I know they'll continue to be clean and happy rooms! She made me actually enjoy cleaning up and decluttering. I donated bags of clothes, housewares, and the things I kept all have a place to belong in my home. I can't recommend Judy enough. Give her three hours and I promise you'll have a newfound happiness in your home!

However I was ready to dig in and learn. Sean called me early this morning and we played a bit of phone tag. When we chatted he was so chill and flexible. I told him I was thinking of doing the job myself but it would likely take me forever. He actually said he would come by today and do it or I could give it a whirl and if I still needed home he could come by on Monday. That type of openness and flexibility was what I wanted to hear. I asked for a price for labor and he was very reasonable. So I suggested Sean come by and do the installs and I'd learn by watching if he didn't mind. He was all for it. He was very thorough and I asked very specific questions about different techniques, connectors, and boxes and he explained it all. He even pointed out a few things I didn't ask like that if you wire hot you should connect the neutral first so it's not open when there is power. Then you go and touch it and zap! Anyway it was fun. I learned a lot, and this was just a bonus on top of the clearly excellent work.

It's interesting to see positive reviews commenting on Dan's pricing and work quality. After…read moreterminating my most recent project with Dan, I hired other contractors to finish the job. This made me realize that excellent workmanship can easily be found for more reasonable pricing. The starting point for my project was an already gutted space consisting of a former walk-in closet and a large bathroom. The goal was to make the bathroom smaller so the closet area could function as an extra bedroom. For privacy reasons, the new bedroom needed its own entrance and bathroom access, while the master bedroom required a separate bathroom entrance. After an initial consultation, Dan sent Noel to start framing the very next day. Dan did not provide even a simple sketch of the new layout and, as far as I know, did not take measurements. As a result, a framing error was made and I was charged both for the installation and the correction ($1,100/day). After a second faulty doorway was installed in the bathroom--despite my purchasing a tub Dan had recommended and sending him the specifications--I terminated the project. Correcting this error later took my husband three full days. To complete the project, we hired other professionals. For example, we hired a plumber who installed all bathroom fixtures for $2,800 (two plumbers, two days). Based on their estimate of the prior work done by Dan's plumber, the total plumbing cost would have been approximately $3,600. Dan's plumbing estimate was $7,000. We also had to pay $850 to repair and bleed the baseboard heating system after the work done by Dan's plumber. Dan's carpentry estimate also raised concerns: 15 days at $1,100 per day. When I requested a list of full carpentry days, dates when no work was performed were included, such as picking up a check or a quick consultation. If you are working with Dan, I would strongly recommend that you keep a daily log of actual work performed and ask whether short consultation visits are billed. Another frustration was Dan's repeated attempts to convince me that I needed work I had never asked for. Dan and Noel stopped by for a consultation about closets and proposed installing a walk-in closet in the master bedroom. This was surprising, given that I had previously paid them to remove the existing walk-in closet because I disliked it. I reminded them of this and indicated that I planned to purchase IKEA storage instead. Despite repeatedly expressing no interest in closet work, Dan continued suggesting that Noel come build closets. There was no proposal, no agreed scope of work, and no pricing, yet the texts kept coming ("Noel is free tomorrow and can start the closets.").

Most people calling are in the early stages and looking for guidance, not to be brushed off.
