Had a consultmfor hand surgery after researching lists of surgeons. Also , received steroid injection for trigger finger. Really personable fellow, cheerful, smart, funny. Wasn't able to have the surgery with him because his practice suddenly changed to not accepting any Medicare patients. Very disappointed! Had to start all over again with different surgeon and consult. Not so easy when still in long recovery from hospitalizations and a struggle to get things done.. If you can, though, go with him. Went to Dr. Shin for what I thought was a cyst growth in my wrist but found out that I was not just a case of tendonitis which would resolve on its own. Felt very nervous but his calming bedside manner is so relaxing I did not get anxiety. He is Asian American which is really important for me because I feel culturally more comfortable since I'm a second generation Asian American who has delt with some pretty bad experiences with first generation Asian male doctors that left me feeling worse. After a car accident, I was diagnosed with a fracture of the distal end of my right radius. Aside from some x-rays, no other imaging or tests were done. On my follow up visits, I kept telling him that my wrist and my index finger hurt as well, and that something was wrong with them. He didn't listen. Fast forward 6 month. My follow up was with his PA, and upon hearing my complaints of my wrist and finger pain, the PA ordered an MRI. The MRI showed that I had a torn ligament in the index finger and a torn ligament in my wrist... After my pain doctor heard about the missed diagnoses, he told me that I needed to switch doctors, and he referred me to a wonderful hand surgeon. One that actually cares and listens to his patients. Dr Shin is a brilliant hand surgeon who's on top of his game and cares greatly about his patients. After a car accident, fractured wrist, a terrible surgery and bad physical therapy I was in horrible pain and life was unbearable. TWO THUMBS DOWN!! This Guy (I refuse to call him a Dr......even though he is) misdiagnosed what was proved to be a simple Trigger-Finger Injury! (and he's the hand specialist?). During the consultation he was obviously distracted, annoyed and rushed (in his defense, they had more patients than they could safely handle). With that said, I saw another Doctor outside of Kerlin-Jobe & was properly diagnosed/Simple Procedure performed! I realize this facility is the "Orthopedic Medical Center to the Stars", but regular people deserve Quality Care too ! 4.5 stars, only because you have to schedule appointments through the phone rather than in the office and you get stuck on hold for a long time. Dr. Shin, however, is amazing. I was quite late coming in because I live far away and was caught in traffic. Yet, he was still willing got see me, was very polite and friendly, had great bedside manner, and was gentle with my hand. I had seen another doctor who told me I had a different problem, but Dr. Shin said that doctor was wrong, and gave me the same diagnosis my primary care doctor had. He was surprised the other specialist I saw had gotten it wrong and hadn't splinted me yet! I get my splint off next week and I hope I won't need surgery. Go to Dr. Shin! Had a giant benign tumor on my ring finger, after it was misdiagnosed by another Dr, started my search at Kerlan Jobe directory and ran into Dr S Shin. He examined my finger, sent to MRI and scheduled the surgery. Surgery went very well, result was 100% success and after recovery, I can barely notice the 1.5" scar. Super glad he recommended no surgery for me. Yes the steroid shot helped short term but what really helped me long term is the app Curable. Pain psychology is a thing and it works. Dr. Steven Shin is the best, he has operated on me twice and I have had great results both times. The first operation was to my left hand, I had severe malformation to my thumb due to arthritis, after the operation and rehabilitation, my hand looked normal and I was able to hold things without dropping them. The second operation was to my right wrist, I broke it while on vacation, Dr. Shin had to operate and put a plate and screws in, because it did not heal correctly, I now have full use of my hand after rehabilitation.
