I just watched Hairspray Jr. for the second time, and had to come on Yelp to rave about Act3…read more On Act3...Act3 Productions is a community theatre in metro Atlanta covertly located behind the Trader Joe's in Sandy Springs Plaza. It was founded about a decade ago, but has only had a space since 2009. If you weren't looking for it you probably wouldn't even know it existed. Just take the small roadway between the Five Guys and Palm Beach Tan, and the theatre will be on your right. There is ample parking! The blackbox theatre isn't large, but it is incredibly intimate. The administrators and staff really add to the vibe as well. From their warm greetings and hearty discussions, it is clear that they love what they do. That being said, intimacy is only one part of the equation. Act3 manages to have that AND talent. Also, this theatre gives back. Act3 prides itself on being an active participant in the Atlanta community. As a 501c3, the theatre regularly hosts workshops for kids, some of whom can't afford them, does benefit shows, and helps feed the homeless. On Hairspray...Hairspray Jr was the product of a mere three weeks of rehearsal, and featured teens ranging from 12 to 17. this play was so well-acted, and easily one of the most moving children's programs I've ever seen - and as sister to a thespian, I've seen my fair share. These kids doubled as singers and dancers, and gave every song both the vitality that we continue to associate with Hairspray, and the gravity of its real world context. They made me laugh to the antics of Corny Collins, awww to the lovesick pairing of Tracy and Link, and cry to the heartwarming rendition of Miss Maybelle's "I Know Where I've Been". And I must not be the only one impressed by these kids; all six of their shows were sold out. So if you have the time, give these lovely actors and producers a nod, and visit Act3! They are doing great things for this community, and I for one am excited to see how the adults fare in Ruthless next month.

There is a separate photo room/mini bar. It is tucked away and actually has some good lighting & items that could serve as props while taking pictures or selfies. Some of the negatives are that there is only one small bathroom per gender. I do commend them on clean restrooms. Also, the chairs were metal, hard & high up on bleacher type wooden stands. Otherwise the decor was cool. The rest of this review is about the show & how it played out in the venue. I saw a show called F.E.M. It is a coming of age TRUE story of a black gay man naked Erik Dillard who was adopted, bullied & finally living his best life at age 40 in Atlanta. With that in mind, the props crew was definitely set to handle a lot of tasks. They had giant pictures, chairs, and other furniture that represented Erik's ENTIRE life in 2 1/2 hours. I found the staff overwhelmingly professional. They alone get a 5/5. I just think the seats need cushions & maybe 20+ minutes for the intermission would be great for the one bathroom per gender.

I've been an actress (film & stage) for over ten years, so I wasn't expecting to learn anything new, but her course was taught so eloquently that for the first time, I truly felt coached. She was able to break down advanced acting techniques in ways that were easy to understand. Her love for acting and for her students really shined through as she addressed each person by name and remembered what they specifically needed to work on. I was blown away by the precision in which she administered critiques, while remaining kind and encouraging. Coaches of this caliber are similar to the ones I've worked with on Broadway sets. I couldn't believe I stumbled upon this gem in a local Marietta studio. Her knowledge transcended the stage as she explained how to apply certain acting techniques to everyday life. She was kind enough to help me with a presentation I needed to deliver at work. I followed her advice, not expecting much, but actually ended up receiving a promotion. I hardly write YELP reviews, but I just had to share after that. Kia E. is one of the most talented and outstanding acting coaches out there.

I am truly so glad I got to experience this festive masterpiece. From the moment the curtain went up, the production was pure holiday magic! The set, the dazzling lights, and the powerful live band were incredible. Major kudos to all the unseen heroes behind the scenes--the stagehands, lighting designers, and choreographers. Every single detail was so meticulously crafted and flawlessly executed! The Cast and the Heart But the cast... wow! I've never witnessed such a large ensemble be so flawlessly in sync with each other. As someone with a background in theatre, I was actively counting beats as each performer hit their mark--it was a true masterclass in ensemble precision! What truly touched my heart was the moment the ensemble chose to honor our vets--the genuine respect and beautiful fashion in which they did it was unlike anything I have ever seen on stage! It's a moment of profound gratitude and connection. Behind the Scenes Dedication Even during intermission, the spirit of excellence continued! Every usher and server handled the busy crowds heading to the snack bar and bathrooms with such pride and professionalism. It's truly wonderful to see a team execute their jobs with such care. A special note: while this is Ann-Carol Pence's last time performing, she remains an intricate and cherished part of the company and isn't going anywhere! Her legacy shines brightly throughout the show. I had the most incredible, heartwarming night out! A huge thank you to @auroratheatre for the gracious invite.
