Last night, I enjoyed my first Tai Chi class, held outdoors on the lawn. The instructor was precise and attentive, making sure we were getting into each pose correctly while maintaining our pace throughout the practice. I especially loved being outside, using my senses, staying present, and even catching a beautiful sunset along the way. This is one of Spruill's free wellness classes, offered on the first Monday of each month. What a beautiful way to bring wellness, art, and community together! Once again, the Spruill Arts Center reminds me that inspiration can take so many forms. The pace was perfect and I never felt as though we were moving too fast. There were only 4 people in my Sunday afternoon class which allowed plenty of opportunities for him to walk around and help us individually. We also had opportunities to take little snack/bathroom breaks. The building is shared with the library and since that's closed on Sundays, there was usually ample parking. Sometimes there would be a children's performance in the theater near our studio but it was never really disruptive. Although sometimes, there would be less parking spots near the studio entrance on those days. I genuinely enjoyed taking this class at Spruill! I hope to take more classes here in the future and I even told my friends about it. The classes are reasonably priced for the quality of instruction that they offer, and there may be a few need-based scholarships available on their website. I believe there is a donation-based supply closet available to students who are currently enrolled in art classes, but the closet itself is only open during the week. Overall, I think Spruill is a great place hone any craft and I would love to take more classes in the future.

Well since this 5th birthday was SO special because my husband just published his first children's book about our son being a superhero..And the party had to double as a book release too.. We wanted to do something uncommon for a 5 year old's birthday or at least something we don't usually do! I called the Vinings School of Art, and the owner Cara or maybe it's spelled Kara, was very thorough and got my party booked right away! She insisted that I come by and view the space and decide which sculpture we wanted to do. The place is super cute, very colorful and festive, so minimum decorations are needed. Her and her assistant had the rooms spotless and ready to go way before it was time for the party to start. The kids had a blast! They created 3D rocket ships with two revolving planets! Cara/Kara was even nice enough to clean everything up after the younger babies who couldn't paint had made a mess of the toy area! Everything about our experience was professional, fun, and well executed! We'll definitely be back!

Going to college alone is just not enough to build a good book, in my opinion. And The Creative Circus is the place to be if you wanna go to portfolio school. (And have people constantly asking you, 'wait whaaat? where do you go to school?') I didn't just build a book there, though. I met some amazingly talented, super smart (so smart they're intimidating at times but also awesome) people, and made connections. People say your college friends are 'for life,' but honestly, my Circus friends are the ones I'll never forget. Plus, the people are really nice. Very low asshole population. I originally stopped by in search of pottery classes--and was delighted to find not only that they offer them, but also that a new session begins on October 13th. In addition, there's a Fall Break Art Camp for grades 2-5, where children will experiment with a range of media including watercolor, acrylics, and collage. As I walked through the space, I was able to watch artists at work and enjoy the current gallery exhibits on display. The atmosphere was inspiring and welcoming. Adult fall classes--running October 6th through December 13th--are also available, covering both visual and ceramic arts. Each class is taught by individual instructors, making it approachable for students of all levels. Best of all, online registration makes it simple to sign up. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that such a wonderful resource has been right in my neighborhood all along. It was a great experience, and I've already registered for pottery classes--something I'm really excited about! The pottery and paint selection is fine for the most part, but they don't have any of the sponge…read morestamps that they used to have when I went there several years ago. The stencils and stamps the did have left were very old and didn't work. Also, the employees just seem really absent minded and not knowledgeable or interested. And whatever you do don't forget to take a picture of your art work before you go. If you don't, they will have no way to figure out if it's finished. They won't call to tell you it is finished. And if you don't go get it within 30 days it will be destroyed. Their system is very archaic and dysfunctional. They don't tell you that you have to take a picture, you're somehow just supposed to know this. Also, expect to spend at least $75-$100, which I think is very over priced. Just go somewhere else instead.
