I initially came to Stephens Dentistry on the recommendation of my husband who has been a patient there for many years. They have always treated him with respect and kindness. However, my experience was extremely different. My husband is a white man, I am a black woman. I'll let you infer from that what you want. First off I will say that the ladies at the front desk and all of the assistants are wonderfully lovely extremely professional people. I wish that I could take them over to my new dentist. They are the only reason that I gave Stephens multiple chances. On my very first visit, Dr. Stephens treated me rudely and was extremely arrogant. I have a mouth that needs a ton of major dental work. Dr. Stephens began to lecture me on how irresponsible I had been to let the work be delayed. He then made gross assumptions that I was a young adult who had spent my money irresponsibly on cars and toys (while bragging about his own car and toys) instead of getting my dental work done. Once he took his hands out of my mouth, I corrected him and told him that I was a 40 year old woman who grew up poor and was finally able to repair the neglected work. He apologized for his rudeness and said that he had just come from a funeral so he was in a bad mood. Because he apologized and my husband had had such a great experience, I gave him another chance. Over Labor Day weekend I experienced excruciating pain due to a bridge that was scheduled to be eventually replaced. I called the emergency number twice and sent Facebook messages to the office, but no one responded to my calls and I spent all weekend in agony, barely able to eat or drink room temperature water without extreme pain. On Monday morning I finally received a response from the office and went in for an appointment. Dr. Stephens barely apologized. When I asked why no one called me back, he began bragging about how he had the most amazing weekend in his cabin in Wisconsin that does not receive cell reception. He said that it was absolutely normal at Stephens for a patient to not receive a call back in an emergency. The few times that I have had to call other dentists in the past over the weekend, I always received a call back from their junior dentist or another practice that they referred emergencies to. The fact that Stephens doesn't have emergency service is bizarre and unacceptable. Or, perhaps he simply chose to not call me back and leave me in pain. I'll never know. Dr. Stephens looked at the tooth and said that he couldn't see any reason that I should be in extreme pain. He said that it was possible that the tooth would eventually need a root canal, but he didn't think that I should go to see the endodontist for at least three weeks because my mouth was so sensitive. He blamed my hot/cold/sugar sensitivity on eating chocolate (???) and said that it was just normal sensitivity that comes with age. He wiped a little sealant on the tooth and told me go home to take Advil for the pain and just wait it out. He then charged me $180 dollars for basically telling me to "suck it up". As he finished up, the assistant prompted him to fill out the referral form thoroughly, but he waved her away, saying "he'll figure it out". He was upset that I questioned his judgement and blew me off. I immediately called my Oral Surgeon who got me in immediately, did an exam, took an x-ray, prescribed me a painkiller and referred me to a new dentist immediately - no charge. I went to a new dentist who did an exam, took an x-ray, and sent me across the hall to an Endodontist. Again - no charge. The Endodontist treated me immediately and said that the tooth was severely infected and began the first part of a two-part root canal. Dr. Stephens has poor bedside manner and did not believe me when I said I was in severe pain and has no emergency service. There are thousands of other top notch dentists in Chicago and Evanston that treat their patients with respect, have emergency service and will believe you when you are in pain instead of letting their own issues get in the way of good care. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. read more

I have been a patient of Stephens Dentistry for more than 6 years and I unfortunately I cannot recommend Stephen's to anyone any longer (though I did for many years!). I will start with the positive: Lauren and the office staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They follow through, return calls, and share empathy. They are friendly at every visit. They are the only reason I am not giving Stephens only 1 star. Unfortunately, both Dr. Jim and Dr. Bob are extremely unprofessional. They have neglected our family on numerous occasions, most recently ignoring calls to their emergency line over a holiday weekend when we had a dental emergency (their excuse: the Dr. was at his cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin and has no cell service). They did nothing to apologize or to right the situation, the doctors and staff simply made the excuse that he was out of cell range, as if that is an acceptable excuse as to why a doctor does not check his emergency messages or have another doctor, not at a cabin in the north woods, to check it. When they finally called back and saw our family to address the emergency pain, Dr. Bob refused to do anything to address the pain, refused to prescribe any pain killer, and said that he did not think the root canal could be done for a few weeks, and to go home and deal with the pain using aspirin. He provided a "sealant" to help with pain and charged us $188. (We immediately went to another dentist who, for FREE, x-rayed and saw the root canal was necessary immediately, and sent us across the hall to a surgeon who did it immediately and gave us a pain killer WITHOUT QUESTION. That is our new dentist!) Worse, Dr. Bob was extremely rude, insinuating on several occasions that my family had not taken well enough care of our teeth, that we spent our money on other (less important) things, and neglected our teeth, and that our concerns were not important enough to warrant action. After neglecting the emergency line, and refusing to take action to alleviate a dental emergency, I have to wonder if these doctors know what they are doing. There are plenty of talented, friendly, helpful dentists out there and my advice.... go find one! read more

Have you ever been hesitant to relocate for a job? Possibly. But have you ever been hesitant to relocate for a job because you like your dentist? Probably not. I'm a recent grad in the middle of their post-college job hunt, and as crazy as it sounds, part of the reason I don't want to leave the Chicago area is because I don't think I'll find a dentist I like as much as Stephens. You might be thinking to yourself, "But no one LIKES the dentist!" Well, Stephens Dentistry proved me wrong. I mean, it's not like getting your teeth scraped and gums poked is ever fun. But the dentists at Stephens do their best to make you as comfortable as possible during every procedure. For example, I've always hated cinnamon, bubble gum, and mint flavors of toothpaste, so at today's check-up, Kayla brushed my teeth with crown polish instead. During my first appointment, my teeth were treated to by Olga, who was super friendly, hence why I still remember her name six months later. I had to take a lot of pictures of my mouth, which was uncomfortable, and Olga walked me through the whole process patiently and sympathetically. Another time I went in was just to fix a poorly-molded mouth guard my previous dentist had issued me. Dr. Jim insisted on taking the extra time to make sure the wax fit my teeth perfectly, even when it was a busy day in the office. As someone who really wants a career in marketing, I can tell you that a business with earnest practices, dedication to their goals, and a sense of community is the easiest sort to write about. Stephens Dentistry is a place that encapsulates all of the above. Its atmosphere is professional yet welcoming, and their new office is somehow even more beautiful than the last. If you're looking for dental care that puts your molars before your money, Stephens is the place for you. read more

I love Stephens Dentistry! Seriously. Go here. My first experience with them was three years ago, when I chipped a tooth during work. I called several different dentists who wouldn't see me day-of, but when I talked to Colleen at Stephen's, she told me to come in right away and they'd find a few minutes for me. They patched me up and I've been a fan ever since. Everyone at Stephen's is super-nice. And not the fake nice, but truly, genuinely, care-about-you-as-a-person nice. They go out of their way to get you everything you need to have a good experience during your time there. I have terrible teeth (very soft and weakened from years of not brushing when I had braces), so I've had a lot of fillings in my time. When I first went to Stephen's, I had something like seven cavities that needed attention. Dr. Bob (who is the best!) got me decay-free and I've now been cavity free for three checkups in a row! (Which hasn't happened for fifteen years) My dental hygienist, Lauren, is amazing. She is really friendly and keeps you quite entertained during cleaning-time. She has helped me to be very proactive about preventative dental health, which is awesome. I do end up paying a bit more here than I might at another dentist, but it's completely and totally worth it for the quality of care that you receive here. I used to loathe the dentist office, but the people at Stephen's actually make it enjoyable. If you're in the market for an awesome dentist, I could not recommend them more. 5-stars!! read more

First of all, let me just say that I have been coming to this practice for 30 years and I can truly say that its never a dull visit at Stephens dentistry. With a family like atmosphere, I am always wowed by something every time I go for my visits. No matter how nervous I am about getting the actual work done in my mouth, somehow that feeling subsides with the upbeat always smiling staff. It's been a while since I had crown work done, but Dr Jim took the time to explain in interesting detail how they would mill and fabricate my crown to perfection with the latest and greatest materials. I felt like I was on a fun museum tour because Dr Jim's knowledgeable assistant gave me a tour and I actually saw my crown in the making through the clear view window of this neat robotic milling machine lol. This saves me time as well so that I don't have to go back one more time to actually get my real crown. So in a nutshell, if you are as nervous as I am about people working in your mouth and are seeking the best quality dentistry; look no further. You will leave smiling:) read more

I went to Stephens Dentistry yesterday for the first time. After going to at least 12 dentists in my live, I can honestly say that this was my best experience. They are all extremely customer service oriented. They have all the latest technology, some I had never experienced previously. The care was awesome. I thought I was in for recommendation saying I virtually needed to have every tooth fixed in some way but was surprised as the dentist pointed out the condition of everything, what I may want to consider down the road, what the cost would be, and whether I needed the procedure or not. Even with worn teeth, he told me that after all these years, teeth wear out but you have a 'clean mouth'. While not scheduled yet, I know I'll be going back in a few months to have some stuff done but I already know the cost and that it's not going to be all that expensive. I moved to Evanston, IL 3 months ago and almost right away my front tooth cap fell off. My sister's family goes to the Stephens practice and called for an emergency visit for me. They fit me in the next morning. When I went for my initial visit, it was the most comprehensive I've ever had and the most explanatory. At my teeth cleaning, the office has the technology to take pictures of my teeth and the technician, who did an amazing cleaning, also showed me pictures of the plaque and what I should do to try to prevent the build up. Now, I've been to both Dr. Bob and Dr. Jim and have total confidence that I've found the best practice I could have. Prices seen to be on the higher side but that may be because I'm coming from St. Louis, MO. Good care of teeth is so important and I am so pleased to have found both dentists and their support staff. read more

I've been a client of Stephens Dentistry since moving to Chicago and both Bob and Jim are superb. Initially, I decided to see them because of convenience of working in the same building as Stephens Dentistry, but after using a half dozen dentists in my life, including my grandfather, I have always been impressed by the personal interest as well as the technology they use during my sessions. Dr. Jim and Dr. Bob are great to talk to and their assistants have every tool necessary to ensure my teeth stay in pristine shape. I also want to credit the dental hygienists for their friendliness and great work. I have worked with three or four hygienists and they are very comprehensive in their cleanings and recommendations. Fantastic dental practice -- I am a recent convert to Stephens Dentistry. After being a patient at another dental practice for 30+ years (a practice I was happy with), I needed an emergency appointment and Stephens was able to fit me in. They created a -- crown on the spot, no return visit! -- that fits wonderfully. Since that time, I have been back for cleanings and will continue to see them. The staff is amazing -- upbeat, happy, caring and very attentive. You can tell they enjoy what they do. From the front desk, to the assistants & hygienists to the office manager -- everyone is great. Stephens Dentistry is very professional in every way. They are up-to-date and I have complete confidence that they can solve all my problems. I first came here with a problem with 4 front teeth that were worn thin from grinding and in danger of breaking off. Another dentist said I had to have my entire mouth recapped due to how the front caps would change my bite. Dr. Jim Stephens had the equipment to scan my teeth and determined that he could cap just the front teeth. Since then I have had quite a bit of work done and everything is done right. Our new GP here recommended Stephens Dentistry, and I couldn't be happier. The whole staff is friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is upbeat, and the office is lovely. I just had my first appointment at Stephens Dentistry and I love them. Every single person in the office was extremely friendly and I didn't feel like they were trying to push any products or unnecessary procedures on me. I think that I saw Dr. Jim and he actually talked a great deal about how their policy is prevention rather than invasive procedures. Their office is also very modern. Everything is digital- so convenient. I'm privately insured, so I don't have dental insurance and I felt like their prices were very reasonable. I have no suggestions for how they could have improved the process or the results when it came to Dr Jim's repair of my front-top, chipped tooth. The color match and sculpting were spot on. The support staff was polite, competent and efficient. Very good attention to detail from the waiting room to the exam room. Got the "Yelp" discount. Couldn't be happier with the process or the results. No reason even to give them a 4 star rating. The experience was perfect.
