They pick a video or iPad to keep them occupied, choose a toy/sticker/balloon animal and even get coins to get a couple little prizes from that old-school candy/prize machines. It's so cute how much they accommodate for kids! We also get quality toothbrushes...I haven't had to buy a toothbrush for them in years! Dr. Park is THE nicest man I have met and owns the business. We wait to see him and he is do personable, knowledgeable and trustworthy. I really need to feel like I am getting the best care with honesty and integrity with service and pricing and this is definitely the place!! I've seen a variety of measures in dental offices and I felt really safe in their practice. - Laura and other front desk staff are so organized and efficient, and communication has been super easy. They really make a big difference to keep things running smoothly. - Dr Simon and her assistance are great. Dr Simon is fast doing the dental procedures and her assistance works seamlessly with her, which works so great for the short focus span for kids. Unlike our last dentist, Dr Simon doesn't put on anesthesia and walk away. She stayed with us the whole time in every visit, which made things go faster and helps my son stay calm in a stable environment. - Genuinely nice and caring people. As first time parent I certainly was not prepared for how bumpy the kid dental visits can be. All the people mentioned above gave us so much encouragement and support throughout! - Last and so importantly, most of our appointments were right on time, and for only once we had to wait for 15min. Prior to the actual appointment, Dr. Suzy came out and spent time inquiring about my son's hygiene habits and even offered proactive tips. I was floored at how well the actual appointment and cleaning went. Sure, the five minutes felt like an hour as I held my son down while he whimpered, but Dr. Suzy and the hygienist sang the entire time while my son's nanny and I cheered him on. Afterward, he was rewarded with a balloon and life was good again. The woman at the front desk was incredibly friendly as well- introduced herself. She also helped me verify my out-of-network dental insurance benefits. Personal responsibility goes a long way, people!

The fact that the contracting with insurance and the leg work of insurance reimbursement is not handled by the office, but instead left to the patient, is in my opinion nothing short of a racket. I have not received reimbursement from my insurance and now it's my responsibility to call BCBS, sit on hold, wait for a reimbursement check. Hours of my time that should have been handled by the Grins administrative office. If you have money to flush down the toilet - this practice is great. If not - do not recommend. They play up a sense of urgency and heavy handed tactics to get you to agree. My biggest regret is not getting a second opinion. For all their modernity, they are incapable of gathering an accurate estimate from your insurance. I have never had this experience with any other dental practice; the final bill has always aligned with the insurance estimate. At Artful Smiles, the bill was always, always significantly more than the delivered estimate. When I questioned the office on this, they told me to take it up with my insurance. Again, I have never had another dental practice (or doctor's office) do this. To give some idea of how absurd their pricing is, I was quoted $1,000 (with insurance!) for a crown. I am mortified to say I just accepted this without question. The final bill, however, was nearly $2,000 for a single crown. The crown broke down within a few years. I had a replacement done at North Shore Dental down the street for under $400. This office profits on scamming their clients and exploiting people in need of care. There are plenty of honest dentists in Evanston; I urge you to entrust your dental care to anyone other than these scam artists.

I have been going to Artful Smiles for a while, and while the care is generally good, I am getting…read moresick of them pushing random extra treatments, especially when they don't fully explain what they are. They convinced me to do Invisalign a few years ago. Not covered by my insurance, and the only discount they offered was if I paid in full up front. So, sure, I did it, and yes, I am glad I did it in the end, but the process was very frustrating. They said I would be swapping out aligners over the course of about 8 months, but that it could take a little longer. They did not explain that they would be placing semi-permanent attachments on my teeth until I was sitting in the chair. I felt like, oh, this is basically the same thing as having braces again. I followed all of their instructions, but it still took about two years to finish the process. At what I thought was the end of my Invisalign treatment, since they said it was the end, they had me sign a piece of paper that said they actually recommended further treatment. They'd been "fine-tuning" everything on the top, but apparently thought something else was needed on the bottom, but hadn't addressed that in the six months prior, so that I could have been wearing different bottom aligners, or something? I was vexed at this complete lack of information, only to have a hygienist sit down to put a wire retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth without saying ANYTHING. I had to ask, wait, what are you doing??? All of the Invisalign aside, they also recommended me for gum graft surgery to fix some gum recession, something that wearing those retainers for months/years actually exacerbates, yet another thing that was never explained. The last two times I have gone in for a cleaning, I really didn't like the male hygienist at all. He was very heavy-handed, poking my gums to measure each tooth for recession, and then "check for bleeding," like, yeah, my gums might bleed if you're jamming a metal pick into them. He also pulled up my X-rays and pointed at a couple of different spots and was like, "Yeah, these look like they're going to turn into cavities," before pushing some new spot-treatment. There was literally nothing on the X-ray to see, and I really wondered why the hygienist and not the actual dentist would be making calls like that. I've had one cavity in my entire life (of course, discovered and filled at Artful Smiles), so I was pissed off that this guy was pushing yet another expensive "treatment," yet again without any explanation of what it is, the cost or how long the "treatment" takes. After looking it up, I saw that it's very expensive, not covered by insurance, I guess approved in the US, but not widely used by dentists. Maybe it's great for some people, but I did not appreciate the aggressiveness. I shouldn't have to fend off unnecessary costs every time I get a cleaning.

I was very nervous going to this appointment - breastfeeding has been very painful since my daughter was born, so on the one hand I was kind of hoping for a lip tie diagnosis as vindication that it wasn't just "my fault" that nursing was going so badly. On the other hand, I was nervous that she *did* have a tie and might need surgery (albeit very minor surgery). Dr Kirk was very reassuring from the beginning - he showed me a video of how a baby *should* suck and after an examination explained that in his expert opinion, my baby had both a (posterior i.e. easy to miss) tongue tie and an upper lip tie. He showed me photos of both that his assistant took so I could see what he was talking about. I then dissolved into tears because I was both relieved to have an explanation for the pain and sad that she would need to be handed over for a procedure. Dr Kirk and his assistant were both very kind and reassuring. The procedure itself was done by laser, which apparently means pain and bleeding are minimal. It took all of ten minutes before she was back in my arms and they let me breastfeed in a private room straight away. Daughter wasn't even crying when she came back from the procedure. Dr Kirk gave me his personal cell number in case I had any concerns about recovery, and his office called me later that day to see how my daughter was doing. So I received fantastic care in the office and also felt very supported thereafter. They also scheduled two follow-up appointments, which are included in the cost of the procedure (that cost, I would add, seems very reasonable - from what I can tell, it was cheaper for me to pay out of pocket here than it would have been to go with an in-network ENT specialist). I took one star off because I had an 11.30 appointment but didn't actually see the doctor until 12.30. Luckily I didn't have anywhere else to be, and it was worth the wait, but it would have been nice to be told on check-in that they were running a bit behind. If you have any suspicion of lip and/or tongue tie in your breastfed baby then I would highly recommend a visit to Dentistry for Kids.

After giving all the information needed I was told "how this would work" which was a speech about how parents are not allowed in during the appointment and I'd have to wait in the waiting room. After saying how that seemed extremely odd and concerning since this is a medical appointment and I'm their parent I was told it was "no different than day care". We don't do daycare either not that this is even remotely the same. Sorry I'm not leaving my small tiny children who I already mentioned were nervous with a man I've never met. I've been complaining to dentists for years about my bite being off, and not having a "home position" for my teeth. The clenching and grinding in my sleep was painful and causing issues with my teeth and gums. Dr. Kohler started with a thorough exam. He then took molds for a bite analysis. When that was finished, I came back in and he talked me through everything, answered all of my questions, told me the cost, and what would and would not be covered by my insurance, and then scheduled me for a bite adjustment. The bite adjustment was quick and painless. In one hour, Dr. Kohler was able to accomplish what I thought could only be done with braces or Invisalign. I instantly noticed how comfortable it was to close my mouth and rest my teeth together. We hit our target: my mouth finally had a comfortable "home position." But when I got home and looked in the mirror, I couldn't believe my eyes. All of the "peaks and valleys" of my teeth aligned with no gaps. I could close my mouth without having to force my lips closed, which caused a wrinkled chin look that I hated. I even woke the next day to a relaxed jaw. Hopefully gone are the days of waking to a tight, clenched jaw. A huge thank you to Dr. Kohler (and to Heike for assisting)!
