In my previous dental office in Manhattan cleanings were done by an hygienist. I complained to Dr.Yen about a front tooth that had rotated and was pressuring the tooth next to it and my top and bottom lips. She referred me to Putman Orthodontics to see what they could do about it. I saw Dr. Lee at P.O. who told me he could not help me and he was going to call Dr. Yen to work out another plan for my case. She also referred me to Valley Endodontics for evaluation because she was not sure if I needed a root canal. The day after seeing Dr. Lee at P.O. I called Precision Arts and I was transferred to Michelle, The office manager, and explained what had happened with Dr. Lee. She told me to call back two days later to speak to Dr. Yen. Two days later I called and Michelle told me I would have to come in to speak to Dr. Yen. I went in the same day to find out the results of her conversation with Dr. Lee and what the plan was to fix the discomfort I had been experiencing. Dr. Yen looked puzzled, obviously she did not have a plan and she did not confirm having discussed my case with Dr. Lee. When I insisted to find out what was the plan she and Dr. Lee had reached during their conversation she abruptly left the office and sent the office manager to escort me out of the office. It is outrageous that an health professional treats a patient this way. I am glad it ended first visit because with this type of treatment it would not last another visit. Any way I was looking for a dentist that could treat any issues that would come up, be sure about what should be done and not give me the run around sending me to other facilities for further evaluations and at the end with no solutions.

The office clerk could just not get my insurance info straight and kept telling me to call the insurance myself because they were denying services that should have been covered. I ended up calling insurance myself and getting a discrepancy between what the office was telling me and what the insurance was telling me, which was that services were being submitted with the wrong code. I asked her to resubmit which she said she did but never returned my calls. As luck would have it, I ended up with a toothache last week. When I went in, that person no longer worked there, big surprise, and my claim was still outstanding so I had a balance. I asked them to resubmit to insurance. with the correct codes. Instead of realizing that there was a misunderstanding, of which I was at no fault, I was talked down to and cut short during my attempt to understand what was being denied and why. I was told that I would get a statement in the mail and when I have it in front of me, I can read it myself. How crazy is that? To add insult to injury, as Dr. Petrosino was examining me, I'm in pain and she is not sympathetic or compassionate at all and was actually sarcastic and snide with me as she tried to figure out which tooth was hurting. Needless to say, her people skills can use a refresher course and someone needs to start properly coding insurance in that office. Ridiculous. I actually wanted to like this doctor and didn't want to change dentists so I was looking for reasons to stay and saying, the next time I go or call, it will be better, but to be honest, each time I called, the interaction was worse than the last. I must separate the technical expertise of Dr. Rothstein from the administrative and cultural environment of The Smile Place. The 5-Star Dentist: Dr. Rothstein is exceptionally talented and kind. I came to him needing complex work done on a failed permanent bridge after a high school trauma left me without my front teeth. This is a very vulnerable situation, and Dr. Rothstein showed genuine compassion and the highest level of skill, successfully recreating my smile where others could not. If you are looking for cosmetic dentistry or complex restorative work, he is, without question, a genius and one of the best. The 1-Star Staff and Culture: The reason I am compelled to write this is the pervasive atmosphere created by the rest of the staff, from the front desk to the hygienists. While under Dr. Rothstein's care, I overlooked numerous instances of textbook passive-aggressive comments and behaviors directed toward me. As a patient, you quickly learn that getting in to see the doctor, who is truly excellent, takes priority over the unpleasant--and unnecessary--staff drama. It was always clear the office lacked soft skills and professional empathy. The Shocking Dismissal: The relationship ended abruptly and disrespectfully. I had scheduled cleaning appointments for my daughters in May to ensure they were seen before an insurance transition. When my daughters had an unexpected, time-sensitive conflict, I emailed the office the morning of the appointments to apologize for the inconvenience and cancel, and I immediately offered to pay the full cost of the missed slots. (By the way they are both young adults) Two weeks later, I received a certified letter formally dismissing me as a patient from the entire practice. After putting up with years of unnecessary passive-aggressive tension from the office staff, the ultimate irony is being fired as a patient via certified mail because my daughters missed their cleaning appointments--an inconvenience I offered to fully rectify financially. Attempts to reason with the front office post-firing were met with being ghosted. Final Verdict: Dr. Rothstein's talent is 5/5. The patient experience, from the day-to-day interactions to the final, shockingly cold dismissal, is 1/5. He told me I would feel a pinch but I never felt a thing. I honestly could have fallen asleep while he was working on me because none of his movements were jarring or rough. Company dentistry insurance took him away from me for a while with mostly horrible results, but I have reconnected with him at his practice in Middletown, NY. I have an hour drive to get to him, but I'd drive two hours to keep him and his wonderful staff. Ok, the staff and I sometimes joke about his controlling style (micro-managing), but they don't turn over because what he does is make the experience and quality of care as excellent as it can possibly be. I love this practice on so many levels.
