Thoroughly mediocre. Service is nice enough but don't expect to taste anything not on their Safeway level tasting menu. We were excited to try them for their cariganan but unfortunately they would not open any nor allow us to try it before buying. For $60 a bottle I would hope for better. The tasting room in healdsburg is fantastic, post covid they have tables set up outside and it is very covid safe, while maintaining their warmth and absolutely welcoming atmosphere. Deb is such an amazing hostess, we absolutely love her and she remembers us by name every time. They are a very small batch winery and every bottle purchased makes a huge difference to them. Downtown Healdsburg is home to many tasting rooms, and Stephen & Walker is among them. They have pretty spacious tasting room with nice modern decor; it's a pleasant atmosphere. Oddly enough it wasn't too busy at 3 pm on a Sat during Memorial Day weekend, but it got crowded as time went on... so it must come in waves. Tasting fees are $20 per person and are waived with a bottle purchase. You are not allowed to do shared tastings. I took advantage of their Yelp Check-In offer for a "free Artisan Tasting for 2" and had made reservations beforehand. They were polite when I had inquired about the check-in offer (I read another review/tip that indicated it wasn't honored) and making a reservation was painless. The tasting consisted of 5 wines paired up with food bites - 4 slices of cheese with a piece of chocolate for the sweet pairing. The cheeses are sprinkled with something different to change the flavor of the cheese as you pair with different wines. Very clever. As for the wines... I'll be honest, I can't remember any of them save for the Sauvignon Blanc we bought. They give you such a large menu, but its really only 5 pre-picked wines you get to taste and they didn't even give us pens to mark which we were tasting. It was just verbally address. I just remember all of them not being particularly spectacular. The tasting experience was a little odd - there was only one server the whole time, so she had to split her time between 4 different groups going at different pace. I didn't learn much about the wine as a result, as she was always rushed splitting her time between different groups. Kudos to her, but the logistics didn't make it a very personable experience. We ended up buying a bottle of the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc... not because we particularly liked it, but simply because to waive our friend's tasting fee. She also had the Yelp check-in offer, but because she was just 1 person... I guess they didn't accept it? Might as well spend the tasting fee towards the $28 bottle. Their wines are on the pricey side here, at least I felt that way while tasting them. I'm not cheap when it comes to wine - if I find something I feel tastes good and I'll drink the whole bottle with confidence, I'll spend the money. (As a result, I'm forever doomed to only buy wines I taste beforehand rather than do the Costco/Safeway/Whole Foods lottery haha.) Overall, it was a nice stopover during our exploration of Downtown Healdsburg, but I'm not sure I'll be back. Perhaps it was an off day to just have one server catering to so many groups? read more

We were introduced to this winery years ago while we did a few tastings in Healdsburg. We always remembered that Stephen & Walker not only had a few good wines, but each one we tasted were outstanding. Our friends joined the club and we would partake every time we visited with them. Now fast forward through Covid and all that has happened to Valentine's weekend 2021. We were able to make reservations easily online and we made our trek over from the east bay. We were seated outside, all three adults with kids in tow. It's no fluke, all the tastings were still great. Each uniquely matched with their cheese pairing. We were able to visit and revisit wines, open new wines, and we brought home a bunch for later. read more

I had plans to meet my friend in Healdsburg and thought it would be a good time to pick up my latest wine club selections. We were supposed to meet at your new tasting room at 4PM. Since she had never been and I hadn't been to the Grove Street location, I thought it would be a fun outing. I checked your website to make sure you were going to be open and what time you closed. This is what was posted: Our Tasting Room We are open daily from 11AM to 7PM, with our tasting room in downtown Healdsburg, just off the plaza. Come visit with us, taste our award winning wines and savor the flavors of our Howell Mountain.... New Address starting July 5th, 2023: 1500 Grove St Healdsburg, CA 95448 Phone number: 707-431-8749 Hours: 11AM - 7PM, daily Monday - Sunday So I drove up from San Jose and arrived around 3:30PM. The gates were closed and it didn't look open. I called the tasting room number from the website and no one answered and the mailbox wasn't set up. So I decided to look up your hours on Yelp and this is what was posted there: Mon 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Tue 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Wed 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Thu 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Fri 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Sat 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Sun 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Yelp also had a different phone number ((707) 385-1067), so I tried that number. There was still no answer and this mailbox was full. There were people at the facility, but it appeared that they were cellar / harvest folks working over the weekend. It looks like Yelp had been updated three weeks ago with new hours, so you might want to update your website to reflect when the tasting room will be staffed and open. Besides this botched wine tasting trip, there have been several other factors that go into me canceling my wine club. The new tasting room looks like an industrial warehouse and I can't imagine the inside looks much different - although I wouldn't know because all of the Yelp pictures are from the old tasting room. Having worked in a wine production facility, I wonder what the bathroom situation is or the glass cleaning process. The downtown location was close to everything so you were able to walk to lunch or dinner after a nice wine tasting. Nothing is close to the Grove Street location. Also, the latest Sauvignon Blanc is missing something. This was the wine I joined the club for and the 2022 vintage is flat or missing something. I usually buy multiple cases a year and now, I'm just trying to get rid of the case I bought thinking it was just young when I tasted it in the tasting room. Finally, the prices have increased. I understand that supplies and rent have gone up, but getting one large format bottle of wine for over $175 is a little over the top. If you are going to save by downgrading your tasting room and having a single location for tasting and production, I think you could keep the wine costs the same. Getting a large format bottle isn't a good option for me since it's just me in my household. I usually end up taking it to a family dinner or friend's house just it won't be sitting open for too long. If you want to save money, stop with the etched bottle and wax top - that is an unnecessary expense. I'm can't speak for other wine club members, but I don't care about the etched bottle or the wax top. I don't collect the bottles as mementos and I really only care what is in the bottle, not on the bottle. You should give people the choice of one large bottle or two smaller 375ml bottles. This review is not directed to Deb, but to the person who was supposed to be working and answering the phone on Sunday. Whomever runs the business, needs to be more professional and have accountable staff that will be there during business hours. How does a business have two phone numbers that don't have a message that gives the name of the winery, address, tasting hours or other pertinent information? It seems like someone has given up and doesn't care about the reputation of Stephen & Walker. I have been supportive and thought about cancelling my membership before, but I liked the idea of a woman winemaker and it being a family business. Deb is so kind and professional in the tasting room and always makes my visits special - having the little cheese plates ready to go and giving input on her favorite wines! She is the face of the tasting room and what had kept me here this long. I appreciate her friendship that we've developed over the years. read more

We met with Debra and she was so amazing at describing all the delicious wines. She made our tasting so pleasant that we went back again a year later. This tasting room is wonderfully located just off the downtown Healdsburg Square and excellently appointed inside with all the features a wine person would love. Keep in mind this review is being written by a hyper critical group of wine drinkers, the wine is incredible. The petite sirah & cab are breath taking and the cheese pairing with the tasting, MAKES this experience. However, ask for Mrs. Deb and the tasting is so much more than promised. She knows the wine, she is sweet as can be, she will cater to your preference and you leave wanting more.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It was our first time in Healdsburg - we were there because of the Food and Wine Affair weekend. There were a lot of cute tasting rooms in Healdsburg. We walked in here and were greeted by a friendly host. We then walked towards the back of the shop and got a piece of frittata - which was delicious! My friend came up to the wine counter and asked for a pour. This older lady straight up IGNORED her and passed her up the 3 or 4 times she asked for a pour. She would pour for people next to my friend who didn't even ask for it!! I was standing back eating my frittata and watching this. My friend kept standing there holding her empty glass up. Then another friend came up to the counter and asked to get a pour of the pinot. The same older lady ignored her too! I was like wow could it be a coincidence or was it because they were both Asians among all Caucasians in the shop? Then our beaus (who are White) came up to the counter and asked for a pour - and low and behold they got it immediately! My two girlfriends are still standing there holding their empty glasses for the past 5 minutes. The discrimination was VERY obvious. Finally one of the girls' husbands, who is White, asked for his wife to get a pour was when the woman finally poured their glasses. DO NOT go here if you are not Caucasian. Racism exists here. The rest of our day was ruined. I know we shouldn't let one hateful person get to us, but it did. What's worse was the fact that it was the birthday girl who got snubbed. It was a shame because their Pinot was very good but we refused to spend any money there. We each usually leave with half a dozen bottles when we like something. read more

Second stop of our wine tasting tour with our group of ten! :D The huge bottles of wine in front of the store got our attention after La Crema!! HOLY Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar! O_O I decided to opt out of the $10 tasting and visit the antique shop a few doors down. haha However, two tastings are waived if you decide to purchase a bottle here! There was only one pourer, who was a bit slow, for 15+ people there. But I think the boys in our group ended up buying a few bottles of wine! Go here! This is a must! I had honestly never heard of Stephen & Walker before finding this tasting room on Yelp. They had a check-in special for a free tasting and cheese sampler, which brought us in, and I'm sure glad it did, because the tasting was fantastic! The pourer was super friendly and knowledgable about all of the wines and the story behind the winery. Stephen & Walker has a female winemaker, which is apparently very rare for the industry. We started with a lovely Sauv Blanc, followed by a rose of pinot noir. The rose only comes in magnums, because "it's a party wine" according to them! Next, we were served a little plate of four types of cheeses to pair with our next four wines, and we were given instructions on what to eat with each wine. All four were lovely, and paired perfectly with the cheeses. I especially enjoyed comparing the Russian River and Dry Creek Zinfandels. Same vintage, different vineyards. Our last stop of the day for wine tasting ends in downtown Healdsburg. We got our reserved table in the front by the window and door which is great and not so great. As we were getting situated I noticed many awards for their wines displayed in a cabinet which made me feel more excited for the tastings. Our host was really pleasant and explained everything well. So the tasting began with a variety of cheeses to go with the amazing white and ended with many reds, Pinot that is. Apparently Sonoma has really great Pinot's and today I have found another fav. After our delicious flights, we were lucky to be poured some dessert wines. 2 Ports and a Muscat. And all three was exceptionally balanced and the way it washed around my mouth, I could've had a couple glasses. During our excitement and indulgence of sugary grapes, we played some Cards Against Humanity and boy did it liven up the table or what. This place has great wines and staff that left us happy. What an amazing find! Was just walking down the street and they had a sign out that outlined their tastings ($10/per person) and it came with a cheese pairing. (Did someone say cheese?) On top of that, if you purchase a bottle of wine the tasting fee is waived. (Score!) 90% of their wines are reds and they have some real standouts. (So much so I ended up joining their wine club - Club members get an additional 25% off of all wine.) The ones I fell in love with were: 1 - '12 Zinfandel - Dry Creek Valley 2 - '13 Cabernet Sauvignon - Oak Knoll - Only 86 cases made 3 - '14 Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley Mary helped our group through each taste explaining where the wine came from and how they decided upon the cheese pairing. It was extremely relaxing and the wines all were good. Since they are such a small production you cannot find their wines at Total Wine or Bevmo.
