The only reason for the 4 star review is because of the poor planning at their pop up event. The food was fantastic! Just like when they had their restaurant open downtown for about the first 9 months. The poor planning for the pop up event I went to, led to them running out of food and struggling to fill orders that they had already taken. I have a solution, open a restaurant location back up that's not in the downtown area and get back to making that top notch BBQ everyday like you used to! read more

I'm so happy to have a good tri-tip sandwich this side of the grade! At first glance, the prices seem a bit high but for the quality and quantity of food you get it really is worth it. Tri-tip was so flavorful and tender, most slices were perfect temperature, a few a little over. The nachos are HUGE! Definitely could feed 2+ people. The salsa could use a little work but that will not deter us from coming back. It is an order at the counter and find your seat joint so very casual. People could not stop commenting on how good the food was! Nancy was nice to begin with and we were excited about the possibility of using Stein's as we had their food at a friends wedding a couple of years back. However, once I told her that their price quote was out of our budget, the nice conversation we had going through email seemed to change. I informed her that we would be going with a taco man catering company and she was quick to inform me that a taco "truck" would not be able to handle our wedding and she was interested in trying to do a mexican buffet (which is what the taco man company will be doing). I informed her of the price quote that we received from the catering company and that is when she turned rude and insulting. I have attached her email response so you can see who you are considering working with. Please note that my venue is definitely not the most expensive in the area and like all brides and grooms, my fiancé and I have taken into full account the amount of traveling, time and gas that will be spent to attend. We were looking for a more laid back, farm to table experience. They wowed us from the very beginning with an amazing complimentary tasting. They invited us and my husband's parents to a beautiful winery where they wined and dined us. The level of professionalism was apparent from the very beginning. Brian and Nancy Stein are for certain two of the nicest people I have ever met. Something about being around them just makes you feel at home and well cared for. They made it a very easy choice when choosing our caterer. Nancy was my wedding fairy godmother. I cannot thank her enough for her kindness. She also offers wedding coordinating services. She has so much experience and holds your hand through every step. She was my caterer, but helped me with almost every element! We kept in very close contact throughout the year and she treated me like a daughter of her own. I have so many emails back and forth with her. She wants nothing but the best for her clients and puts her whole heart into everything. She truly brought light to what can sometimes be a very daunting experience. The day of, everything was amazing. When we first arrived to the reception, I could see and smell the delicious tri-tip Brian was cooking outside. Our menu included tri-tip, ale basted chicken, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, a bread display and berry salad. We also had some vegan/vegetarian options for people who asked, such as eggplant parmesan and grilled portobellos. We had bacon wrapped dates, kielbasa, tomato/mozzarella skewers and bruschetta being passed at cocktail hour. I had one guest tell me she probably ate 20 bacon covered dates because they were so delicious. Everything was exceptional. Our guests were going back for seconds and thirds at the buffet! They told us it was the best wedding food they ever had, and we would have to agree. Stein's also provided us water service which was a nice touch. We had many compliments on the beautiful beverage display with iced tea, lemonade and water. They also cleared the tables after dinner service and cleaned all the plates/utensils. Nancy came up to us at dinner service and made sure we were taken care of before anyone. Brides and grooms not eating at their wedding is something that will never happen in Nancy's care! She plated our salads and piled our plates with a bit of everything. She even packs you a to go portion and any leftovers you have. This is rare, no other caterer we spoke with will do this. We had leftovers all week long, which was amazing after being so tired! Two of our guests unfortunately had to leave before dinner, but they even packed them a to go dinner. Just one of the many examples of how Stein's goes above and beyond. For all that they include and the quality of food you get... they are very reasonably priced. Something very appreciated during the wedding planning process. Stein's holds a high reputation among all other vendors. When another vendor found out who our caterer was, they would all say what a joy they were to work for. If you are looking for a caterer for your event, you should consider yourself lucky to have Stein's. Not only did they figure out a menu that was tailored to our tastes (including a mac and cheese bar with 3 types including a bacon and lobster mac and cheese) but Nancy also went way out of her way to make sure I had everything I needed before the day of the wedding. I am a DIY kind of person and didn't listen to anyone that told me I should get a wedding coordinator so it was especially nice having the guidance from Nancy prior to the wedding. They had exceptional staff that made myself and our guests feel spoiled and everyone was so friendly and helpful. They packed up tons of leftovers (that were even better the next day) and stayed for quite some time bussing tables and helping clean and pack our rentals from SLO party rentals so we didn't have to do it in the morning. They took care of our property manager, bartender and DJ as well. Also the pricing was excellent - for my menu it was $40/person which was buffet style including appetizers and dinner with a water and non-alcoholic drink station. I think every person at our wedding came up to us and commented on the food. For those of you wondering what was commented on the most from our guests: strawberry lemonade, santa maria trip-tip, all the mac and cheese, and the vegetables. read more
