I've been going here for a very long time. The service is great. The grain selection is good enough to make anything you want. Just keep an eye on how the grain is bagged and handled. There have been mistakes as far as milled or unbolted and combining when it's requested not to be. Of I could make one recommendation to them. They need to really work on their yeast selection and in stock. It's hard to find the right yeast you want sometimes. Otherwise, great LHBS. They also give discounts for brew club members. What an amazing little shop. They got everything you need for your home brews. I'm trying to make strawberry wine for the first time and they had everything I think I need in manageable portions. The annual dues is $25 and you get a 5% discount on all Stein Fillers purchases, which pays for itself if you're an avid brewer. So my brother had bought me my first home brew kit from stein fillers for Christmas and I needed to go buy a couple more things to start my first batch of home brew. This is my first visit to Stein Fillers and was helped out by Gary. I needed a kettle and an outside propane burner and Gary was very helpful and showed me around to my different options! We chatted for a bit and he gave me some pointers on starting my first home brew experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit! I believe that these guys have been in business for quite some time. I'm not sure how.... These guys are strait up pricks... Yes they have plenty of grain, hops, yeast. Prices are just okay. As read in other reviews, customer service is atrocious. Seemed like I was inconveniencing them buy spending my hard earned in their store. The owned seemed as if he checked out and stopped giving a crap years ago. The helper, some dude with a 90's looking goat-tee, seemed as if he was actually going out of his way to be unpleasant. Sorry that you had to get up out of your chair and weigh some grains for me bro, but that's you job. Both times I asked for assistance they gave me a general "it's over there somewhere, find it yourseld" answer. We went together, walked in and were immediately sabotaged by the clerk. I'm so disappointed for him. This guy was horrible, rude, and unhelpful. Instead of helping my husband figure out what he needed to get his feet wet and try making beer for the first time. I could overlook their high-priced merch and the faded cheap ink on dusty store brand home brew boxes, but a disinterested 40 year-old employee answering our questions in 10 words or less is simply a dealbreaker. My BF and I have been a roll growing vegetables, fruit, composting, so why not home brewing our own beer! The store has everything you will need if you're a first time brewer or experienced. They will give their honest advice without trying to sell you more. They have kits in a box with a description of the beer. The shop owner does NOT like questions. Even basic questions are answered begrudgingly and rudely. He doesn't seem to want business from anyone but experienced homebrewers, so if you are new to this like I am, go to other stores in Southern California even if the drive is a bit longer. I have to be honest. Contrary to some other reviews. I wasn't sure what to expect. I started going in about a year ago and at first I did notice the two guys there were a bit on the quiet side. Seems to me they kinda let you do your own thing. They will always ask if you need help. In my case I'm always looking for ideas based on what I see. This year I decided to start brewing some home made Root Beer and Hard Apple Cider as well as the Ginger Beer I have been brewing for the last year. However these were really new to me, so I stared looking for information on the web, I found some info here and there and then I found "Stein Fillers" in Long Beach CA. It turns out they are just down the street from me. They have a wide selection of brewing and wine making equipment as well as all the yeast, hops and other adjuncts (additives for flavor) you may need. It's a good sized store and well stocked, they have a friendly staff and they also offer a brewing class once a month and a brewing library open to the public for you to page though if you are looking for information about a specific style of brewing. Now for all the great things they have, (and I do think Stein Fillers is great). They could work on a few things that would greatly enhance the customer experience for both the novice and the accomplished home brewer. * 1st: they could really do with a good cleaning, making sure all the products on the shelves are clean and dusted. * 2nd: organizing all the brewing equipment better would make a big difference. * 3rd: the brewing library could really use to be reorganized as well. * 4th: the staff although very friendly could be a bit more polished as far as their customer service skills. (I just let it go at that) But last night was the last straw!!!! (same guy ) cash register guy. Locked the door on my husband. Note: I am not an avid home brewer. I made 2 trips to this shop, one on an errand for my husband who is a home brew enthusiast, and another with my husband while he picked up a bunch of supplies. Selection of stuff seems sufficient, lots of choices of malts and grains and other stuff. Prices seem reasonable and comparable to other stores. Service, sucks. The first time I went in, I was just looking for bottle caps. Asked the man behind the counter where to find them, he vaguely pointed in an obscure direction. When I couldn't find them, I asked again, and he and another employee argued for a full minute about which of them would show me where the stuff was. Second trip, approached by an employee, "can I help you?" "Yes, we need this list of grains and we need them milled and bagged separately" Blank stare. Heavy sigh. Reluctant compliance. The guy working the register was nice enough, but not nice enough to make up for the rest of the people. Most likely shop to scare away new brewers in Southern California. Nice selection, horrible customer service. I've shopped at Stein Fillers from time to time over the years. It seems that every time I come in I overhear the older guy becoming annoyed and impatient with new brewer questions. The most resent time, a customer in line in front of me had a friend who was in the middle of brewing a batch. Apparently it was a Stein Filler kit and they had just noticed that it didn't include any finishing hops. She said that they had read a bit about finishing hops, and asked what kind she should grab. His response was,"how many batches have you brewed," in a very crappy tone. He then stated that new brewers should just follow the recipe, and refused to answer any questions about late hops, seeming visibly annoyed, and gesturing to me to step up the counter. The two working the shop were assisting other customers at that moment, but neither approached me even after they were free. I continued to look around for what I went into the shop for and noticed a third employee. He walked right by me and went to speak to some regular who walked in after me. Went there on a whim when I decided I wanted to try my hand at wine making from home with all these pomegranates growing in the back yard. I've watched a few videos, and read up on a few recipes as I do with any new hobby im picking up, but I was hoping to get some help from a local shop. Boy was I wrong. Ok, dont get me wrong, I know understand that wine making isn't ALL too hard, but as a first timer, I would have appreciated it if the guy behind the counter could do a little bit of hand holding. He did pick out a carboy, airlock and yeast but he did not a care to help me with any of my questions. Overall, the shop seems nice and really beer focused. I am going back to grab some more gear now that I am almost done with my primary fermentation, but wish I knew more before going there, or hell, maybe the shop owner could have helped more. read more

I called these guys up after a recommendation from a friend and I'm so glad I did. I was on the hunt for a brewing kit for my boyfriend for Christmas and they were so helpful explaining to me what I needed and didn't need to buy and helping me choose a beer kit that he might like (I know nothing about beer I'm a wine girl!) However, I ignored their recommendation to buy a stainless steel pot to go with the kit thinking I could get it for less at one of the local kitchen supply stores. My mistake. I ended up having to drive back there at the last minute and grab one because it was the best deal. A few months later after my boyfriend brewed a bunch of beer they were even nice enough to let him bring a bottle in for them to sample and give him some input on how to improve it. My husband is just starting out as a home brewer, so we visited this place for the first time today. It was everything all the other reviewers said it was: fully stocked with absolutely anything a home brewer would need, relatively reasonable prices, and super unfriendly staff. We were prepared for this, however, so went in well educated. One employee approached us, asking if we needed any help, so I decided to venture a question, and received the expected brush off. He did end up giving us advice, after I told him his vague answer to our question was not helpful at all. He was actually pretty friendly after that. Normally I'm a patron of Culver City Home Brew but they are currently moving and are closed indefinitely. Stein has a wider selection of grains, malts, and hops. As far as what they carry, it's strong. I don't think a customer should hope for the shop workers to be a good mood to get at least adequate service. I tried opening the conversation, but the person working gave short snappy answers, even being sarcastic and absolutely uninterested in helping me. Probably the only brewery supply store in the area, but I would not call it a real brewery... though they do have samples. I've seen people driving down from Palmdale to buy supplies before. Usually the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. Stuff they sell is very good, and their homebrew kits turn out really well. The only real complaint that I have is that I've had a few bad experiences with the owner and personally feel that he is both sexist and ageist. It was a long time ago though, so I don't even know if it is the same owner. read more

Contrary to some negative reviews, I had a good experience here. I'm new to homebrewing, and coming here, I felt supported. My questions were answered, and I found what I was looking for. I brewed a pale ale this weekend with easy-to-follow instructions from their already-made recipe kits. An older man with white hair and glasses helped me out, and encouraged me to attend their training that weekend. I appreciated that! It was intimidating for me because I'm new to this, and I don't want to be judged or humiliated, but this guy was very helpful and open to answer my questions. Everyone has to start somewhere. Stein Fillers is fantastic. I've only been to a couple places thus far and only recently got into homebrew but they're the best. Got their basic homebrew system and a Russian imperial kit to go with it. The instructions with the kit were a bit foggy on the partial mash process but they offer a free introductory class which I took advantage of and was well worth the time (they demo a partial mash for the class). Having very limited options for home brew shops Steinfillers fits the bill. They have a large variety of malts, yeast, and hops. The best prices on bulk grain and yeast in all of los angeles county and even better than online. In addition to the great selection and prices, the customer service is top notch. I called ten minutes before closing time and Steinfillers offered to stay open another hour so i could drive down and get my ingredients before brew day. I am very new to home-brewing and I am using a really cheap home brewing system that my Dad gave to me. The kit I am using comes with bottles but they are those "PET" plastic bottles, similar in quality to a 2-Liter, soda bottle. I am honestly not too crazy about those bottles and I had already used them all up in a previous batch of brew. Meanwhile, I have about 4 gallons of beer that I need to bottle before it starts to spend a little too much time in the keg, so it's a bit of an "urgent" issue. So yesterday, I start looking for a place to buy some bottling equipment and I come across this place. I called to see if they would have what I need and the guy who answered the phone said "We're closed right now, but come on down and I'll get you what you need". When I got there, he was nice enough to take down my e-mail address for their upcoming classes and show me some more advanced brewing kits that I might be interested in, despite the fact that (at this point) they had been closed almost 1 hour past their posted, store hours. I love it when a business goes out of their way to give good customer service! Suffice it to say that this "VIP treatment" will result in a lot of return business.
