I'm updating my review now that I've lived in Carrboro for 2 years. Upon first glance, Steel String is not much to look at on the inside. A couple mismatched tables and chairs with some beat-up board games. The bartenders are nice but you have to go to the bar to order each drink, no wait service. HOWEVER, this place is truly a Carrboro staple. The patio is really lovely and the location of the brewery is great. They're always making new beers and rotating their offerings. Some of the beers are very good! They do live music most evenings and host lots of community events. I'm a fan. So if you're just visiting the area, keep your expectations low and remember this is a favorite local haunt! read more

As a newcomer to Carrboro, I was pleasantly surprised to find a craft brew/pub so close to my new place. The atmosphere was fine - I'd have given it five stars had they offered a better outdoor space. I had the IPA and Saison - both were true to form and tasted great. The beer is good not great, the inside is extremely loud and that makes it hard to carry on a conversation with the people next to you. On this Saturday evening they were having trouble with one of the taps and ran out of beer in another one it was seven thirty and you are a brewery? The place is ok just a little hipster for me. Steel String has a great atmosphere. I love the design and feel of the place. It is fun for late night drinking as well as a nice place to relax in the afternoon. When it is not packed it has a really relaxing vibe. When it is packed it is a lot of fun. They offer a lot of activities at the brewery, such as movie nights, game nights, trivia nights and live bands. Since there are so many activities going on you can stop by frequently without getting sick of it. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Carrboro. They had 5 of their own beers on tap when I was there as well as several other local beers. I had Maggie's Farmhouse Ale which was really good! Since they are a new brewery they are still adding beers to the tap, so it's fun to try them as they brew! I would highly recommend checking out Steel String! read more

Will and friends have created some super tasty brews in an industrial-yet-warm setting at a prime location in downtown Carrboro. I visited during the soft opening last week, and after trying their fabulous Saison and Hefeweizen, I can't wait to taste their future offerings. Great beer. Incredibly rude staff. In 20 years of going to bars have never had this kind of weird interaction. I asked for the check and she said 'how can I give you your check when I don't know your name?' I asked her why she didnt just ask and she said 'im busy' (which I knew, because I'd patiently waited over 10 mins for check while she served people who came after me). So weird. I really liked the neutral milk porter! I also enjoyed the IPAs. The location is great. Simple, casual, fun. Plus they know how to make some good craft beers! I like relaxing here on a lazy weekend afternoon. The crowd seems to be a mix of different age groups. My husband and I ventured out to Steel String from Garner after another event we had in Chapel Hill. We always have to "tag team" attractions in CH/Carrboro/Durham because it's far enough away, so we were glad to finally have an excuse to get to Steel String. The beers were all really sessionable and approachable. My favorite was the cask of Little Sadie's Saison. The atmosphere is so fun to hang out in, and the staff was beyond knowledgeable and helpful if you weren't sure what you were looking for. read more

Cozy little brewery we stopped at, they didn't have a lot of selections that our group was interested in so we only stayed for one drink. They were out of shirts in mens L, so Brandon wasn't too impressed with that either. The atmosphere was nice though, very chill and welcoming. read more

I usually prefer darker brews - porters, stouts, etc - but the Honeysuckle Saison at Steel String is fantastic. Staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is fun. Looking forward to trying more of their excellent brews! read more

I'm not crazy about the space (industrial brewery is so 90s), but the beer more than makes up for it. I had the Cryin' Holy Double IPA (yum), and I did a tasting of 4 for $6 (very good deal.) I wasn't nuts about their holiday ale - but I don't like spice ruining the flavor of my elixir. It didn't hurt that the bartender was adorable. read more

A nice, chill spot to hang out and enjoy some tasty beers. I tried the Big Mon IPA as well as the Rubber Room Rye Pale Ale and they were both solid beers that well-represented their respective styles. A welcome addition to the downtown Carrboro area. read more

The beers are great. My favorites are the Big Mon and Rubber Room. Cool place, but I wish they had more outdoor seating. I also wish the layout inside was a little more inviting. They have a bunch of short tables and lots of little chairs everywhere. It would be cool if they had taller and longer bar tables that would contribute to a more communal vibe. I think the owners are definetly learning as they go and have shown a willingness to listen to their constiuents and adapt. I have no doubt they are going to figure it out and earn their fifth star. read more

Steel String has great beers in a nice, relaxed environment in downtown Carrboro. When I was there last, they had some great local bands playing for free, which is always nice. As for the beers, I especially enjoyed the Maggie's Farmhouse Saison and the Sound City Alt, both great examples of their respective styles. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the rotating taps have other great beers once you've worked your way through Steel String's delicious offerings. Really looking forward to my next visit and the new brews coming down the pipeline. read more

My favorite brewery in the Triangle! I love how they don't just do the typical brews that most of the breweries do. Their sour beers are the main reason I keep stopping by. I wanted to head back out to Double Barley Brewery in Johnston County but, my husband and his friend convinced me to give Steel String a try. Hubby heard Joe Ovies from 99.9 the Fan (on the radio) talking about this brewery in Carrboro. So, we hopped into the car and made the trek out. I was pleasantly surprised. Steel String has a great mix of their own brews and guest brews on tap. All are great for craft beer lovers. I thought they had a great selection. As far as the SS beers that I tried, I was impressed. I liked Dooley Black Saison (which didn't really taste like a saison - it was coffee flavored) and the Der Schneid - a sour beer. I've been feeling the dark beers lately and the Dooley satisfied my thirst. Sour wise - these aren't a type of beer that I actively seek out but, my husband ordered it as part of our four beer flight. We both were impressed. It was a very balanced sour. My husband liked it so much, he ordered a full glass. In addition to the SS beers, they had brews by Southern Tier, Harpoon and Bull City Cider on tap. These are all some of our favorite breweries. The atmosphere was laid back. The outside seating was full when we arrived but, we found a nice table next to the board game shelf. Thus, we enjoyed a game of Cards Against Humanity and then a throw back with Uno. The Mumford and Sons like soundtrack in the background and a very knowledgeable and friendly bartender (one of the assistant brewers) made for a great night. read more

Loved everything about this place from the atmosphere to the staff to the beer. I thought the staff was knowledgeable and helpful, our server even wrote down a list of other places for us to try and explore in the area. We had the Big Mon, Brett Mon, and the Temptation. Sat inside and moved outside when seating opened up. Would definitely recommend as a quick beer stop, a date spot, or a "just because" place to go. read more

Steel String has a great atmosphere--but the beers are mediocre to terrible. The wine selection is also pretty grim--and there's no liquor. I wouldn't recommend this place as a bar so much as a hang out. If you're looking for a cozy place with a patio where you can bring your favorite food from a Carrboro restaurant or food truck, this place is nice. read more

As much as I want to like this place, their beer always falls flat, literally. Recently got a mini-growler of their IPA -- it was flat, bitter, and lacked any depth. This is one in a long line of disappointments for me with this place. The summer basil beer is probably the best they have, and even that one could be more basil-ly. The ambiance is ok, but gets noisy and their outdoor area faces a busy street and a gravel parking lot. You can do better. read more

i tried 2 breweries in chapel hill and this one, while in town for work. steel string shines among them. better beer, more personable employees, more interesting patrons and the only one of the 3 with any character at all. went in for 2 pints, had 4 and headed back to chapel hill, one happy camper. live music (acoustic and electric duo playing some 70's covers and originals) was cool, as well. great, great job, people... read more

This is a great Craft Brewery located on the edge of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. Loved their Double IPA, Hefeweizen, and Saison. The bartender was excellent; very friendly and laid back. The interior is large and well decorated; no loud music so it makes a great environment to sit and talk. They have a nice patio that overlooks Open Eye Cafe across the street. Great place to get together with a few friends, play some games, and enjoy some great beer. read more

Cool brewery in downtown Carrboro. On a Tuesday night around 7pm it was packed, no seats, no chance to even get to the bar. Tuesday is trivia night, so came back later and was able to get seats outside. They have several tables outside which is a nice break from the very crowded space inside. Steel String has events throughout the week, including trivia they have movie and other game nights - where they often serve up free food, so be sure to check Facebook for daily updates on what's going on that night. For example if you come to trivia early and sign up you get a free 1lb. of wings. While I didn't indulge in the beer, I hear it's good..and it's reasonably priced at $5 a pint and they have some fun names and types. Steel String has a fun, young atmosphere and it looks like they're a very welcome addition to the Carrboro scene. If you're interested in checking them out, go early. Hopefully over time they'll be able to expand given their popularity, but until then enjoy this ultra-hipster brewery. read more

Steel String is just the thing Carrboro has been begging for - a craft brewery of our very own! I've been there several times now, and each time it gets better as these guys get set up. Their house brews are fantastic - I tried all of them last night. I highly recommend "A Little Tenderness," which is their honeysuckle saison. Maggie's Farmhouse Ale is also delicious. Steel String is a great place to go for trivia on Tuesday nights - but get there early, because it gets a little crowded. The staff is super friendly, and they have outdoor seating, which is great on a nice spring or summer night. Love it! read more
