The Steamship Authority is the ferry to take when going to Martha's Vineyard. Sure, there are other ferry services, but, the Steamship Authority is the ferry I chose. They are located in Wood's Hole. There is no parking at this terminal unless you are a tour bus. Offsite parking is available in Famouth with a short bus ride to the terminal. At the terminal, you can buy your tickets at the ticket booth where it will cost you $20 round trip. Bringing a car on the ferry is expensive. It is better and cheaper to park in an offsite lot and find other transportation. The ferry we got on was large enough to have plenty of room several tour buses and still have room left over both going to Vineyard Haven and return. The ferry was clean. Seats were in good condition. They had plenty of restrooms. The scenery going to Vineyard Haven was phenomenal. They are a good ferry service. The price for the ferry is very cheap. Only swimming would cost less, but, this area is famous for the movie, Jaws. It is a nice ride.

Excellent Hard-working staff. Most people are going on vacation, the Steamship Authority cannot hire enough captains, more people want to take cars across than space allows, the Island's infrastructure can only handle so many vehicles and the weather and sea obeys only Mother Nature. The ferry service does its job to maximum capacity.

Ship was clean and had concessions inside with tables. I recommend buying tickets online to skip the lines and check for parking lots before arriving as they got full and we had to go to a overfill location further away. Theres no public parking at the actual ferry location, so be advised.

Ferry boat to Martha's Vineyard [Woods Hole MA] We purchased tickets at the ferry ticket office. One way passenger ticket rate is $10/ea (adult) and is good for one passage in either direction (roundtrip is $20). We didn't need to make reservations since we were riding the ferry without a vehicle. The service was very efficient and reliable. It carries both passengers and vehicles, including commercial freight trucks (on the way to Martha's Vineyard we had the UPS truck along with us on board). The ferry we rode in going to Martha's Vineyard was smaller than the one we came back from the island with. I wasn't attentive to the length of time it took to arrive at the island but it wasn't very long, I'd say around 45-mins. This particular ferry has one gender-inclusive bathroom and only had a vending machine. The ship has ample seating. You can sit in your vehicle while it crossed the water or sit inside the boat. Remember where you parked. There are multiple sites for parking. Shuttles are available to take visitors/passengers to/from the dock. Review #3023

Highly reliable service to and from Martha's Vineyard. You'll board the ship with your car along with other cars. After leaving your car, you can remain inside or walk up to the outside upper deck for seating. There's a small beverage and snack bar inside. Small restrooms are available. Inside, you can still view the waters. On the outside deck, there's seating all around. I always enjoy sitting upstairs to view the passing boats and the beautiful waters. No worries when retrieving your car. It's always been in one piece. Check out the website www.steamshipauthority.com for fare and connection information. In addition, there's an outside ticket office for purchasing tickets in person.

This was our first time heading to Martha's Vineyard, and we decided to travel on foot. We checked the cost for bringing a vehicle and found it very expensive compared to Washington State Ferries to the San Juan Islands. We planned to go directly to Woods Hole but learned that we needed to park in Falmouth and take a bus to Woods Hole. The first parking location was fully booked, so we had to drive 15 minutes back to Technology Park at Thomas B. Landers Parking. If it's your first time, here's the address: [22 Technology Park Dr, East Falmouth, MA 02536]. Park there, find your section number based on the poles, and a charter bus will take you to Woods Hole, which is a 17-minute, 9-mile drive. At Woods Hole, you can purchase round-trip tickets for $20 at the ticket office or buy them online and save them to your phone. We boarded the ferry immediately upon arrival. The boat had plenty of space, and we sat on top, which was great given the hot weather. They have a bar on the boat, and I enjoyed a Hazy from a local brewery in Falmouth. My only gripe is needing to know in advance to park and rely on the shuttle bus to the terminal. Other than that, it was a pleasant experience.

Headed over to Martha's Vineyard? This is how to get there. Since we were here in the Winter, we had to leave from Woodhole though in the Summer there are other options. There is no parking at woodpile, so we were instructed to park in Falmouth at the steamship authority parking area. It costs $20 to park but then a shuttle is provided to the ferry. The ticket office and waiting area is a nice place to wait (you can get tickets online as well). This area has an ATM, a place to buy coffee, drinks and snacks, clean restrooms and some visitor information in addition to selling tickets and a few benches. You can take a vehicle on the ship as well but you need to schedule that in advance. The ferry was a pretty large ship with multiple floors to sit on inside and out, a first aid counter, restrooms and a large snack bar. About a 45 minute ride. Beautiful scenery and a smooth ride. Price was $20 a person for the ferry. An experience in itself.

A very efficient operation run by the Steamship Authority. Vehicle reservations are a must but if you go as a pedestrian, no reservations are required. Watch for parking lot signs as you approach Falmouth because parking is off site and free shuttle buses bring you to the dock. Staff at the ticket counters and those loading the boats are very friendly and helpful. Travel restrictions are in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Check the MA gov website before you go as some who travel from select states must fill out travel forms and potentially self quarantine.

If I could give it zero stars - I WOULD! Absolutely amateur hour, not able to get people on the right ferry. Everyone completely useless.

Ask the Community - Steamship Authority

Do I have to make a passenger reservation for the ferry in September. No car just 2 people. or can I park and buy passenger tickets when i get there?

No reservation required if you don't have a car to take, just go to the terminal and buy a ticket.

Susan was very responsive and helpful with all of our questions and concerns and took the time to help us find the perfect resort for our honeymoon. She sent us a little package with all of our information regarding pickups from the airport, our flight information, etc. and it was very helpful and extensive. We needed to reschedule our honeymoon at the last minute due to a family emergency and Susan was extremely considerate and understanding and helped us reschedule our vacation later in 2024. We cannot recommend Susan enough and we hope to work with her again for our next vacation!

There was zero follow through, no clear communication and horrible..I mean horrible customer service. When you use a travel agency, you expect them to take care of the details, to have your best interest at the top of their list. We literally had to chase our travel agent Andrea down at every turn to get information out of her. She was never available for a telephone call and used her personal life as excuses to why she couldn't have a call or two with us. Also saying that she has 300 or something clients. Like that is our fault why she can't gove us great service. There was a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo from this agency in regards fo our cruise. They told us a bunch of hog wash as we spoke with the Celebrity cruise representative on the ship. They told we'd be on a priority list to bid for an upgraded room. However, when we arrived on the ship, Celebrity had no record of that. We booked two cabins over half a year in advance and the cabins were not near each other. They also had obstructed views. Imagine paying for a balcony room and getting a view of the lifeboat. The best part was that Susan Peavey blamed us. I'll tell you what I've worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years (luxury brand/5 star hotels)...never, ever, ever woukd I blame my guests. I also go above and beyond to give each client 5 star service. I anticipate their needs etc. This cruise was a 60th birthday celebration for my friends and a special treat for me as I finished radiation and chemo for breast cancer. I deal with travel agents every day in my line of work. 99 percent of them are outstanding. They have every detail down to a T. As they know the importance of building lasting business relationships with their customers. This agency waa the 1 percent that could care less. Here's the thing: In the service/hospitality industry mistakes are going to happen. Things that out of the provider's control. It's the recovery that matters. It's about making the wrong right We didn't feel like we mattered or were taken care of. We could have booked it on our own and had a less stressful and more delightful experience.

The trip to Italy was planned several months in advance, we were traveling with another couple and we really had no idea how we could fit all our "wish list" into a reasonable 10 day vacation. This was scheduled for February 2022 but as the trip approached, our concerns about Covid 19 had us postponing our trip.
