I don't normally leave negative reviews because I understand how much they can affect a business. I believe strongly in entrepreneurship and in giving businesses the opportunity to improve, so I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, after two visits to this location, I felt I needed to say something. Our first visit was through the drive-through. About half of the order was incorrect, and the customer service was disappointing and unprofessional. I chose not to go back or complain because I assumed they were simply having a bad day. On our second visit, we went inside and ordered through the kiosk. There was no acknowledgment when we entered, not even a simple greeting or "thanks for coming in." That may seem like a small thing, especially in a kiosk-based restaurant, but a quick acknowledgment would go a long way toward making customers feel seen. The food portion of our order took about 10 minutes, which was completely reasonable considering how busy they were. Unfortunately the order was wrong again and missing some sides. I let it go because it wasn't a big deal. However, our milkshake took approximately 40 minutes. After about 20 minutes, I politely asked an employee about the shake. I was intentionally patient and respectful because another customer had just become very upset over his grandson's missing milkshake, spilled a drink on the floor, and left after making quite a scene. The employees had obviously been dealing with a difficult evening, and I didn't want to add to it. The employee told me they were simply backed up on milkshakes and would get to mine. However, she never actually checked my order. After another 20 minutes, now about 40 minutes total, I was the only customer left in the dining room and asked another employee about it. He checked, realized the shake had apparently been missed altogether, and made it himself. Mistakes happen, especially during a busy rush. What concerned me more was that, while quietly observing the operation, this didn't appear to be an isolated mistake. Orders repeatedly seemed delayed, incomplete, or incorrect. From a customer's perspective, this location appears to need stronger quality control and leadership during busy periods. Someone should be verifying that each order is correct and complete before it goes out, and there should be a shift manager or other leader actively overseeing the operation, helping employees stay organized, and handling difficult customer situations when they arise. I actually view most of these problems as training and process issues rather than simply blaming the employees. The staff seemed overwhelmed and could probably benefit from better systems, clearer responsibilities, and stronger support from management. That is especially unfortunate because there are things Steak 'n Shake does very well. This was essentially our first experience with the chain after hearing about it for years. I really liked the uniforms, they give the restaurant a more classic, higher-end fast-food feel. The fries cooked in beef tallow were noticeably better than typical fast-food fries, and the burgers were genuinely very good. For fast food, I would easily put the burgers among some of the better ones I've had. There is a good product here. The customer experience simply needs to catch up with it. If I were the franchise owner of this location, I would want to know what is happening and would spend some time personally observing the operation, reinforcing training, and putting better quality-control procedures in place. Fast food is still capable of being executed extremely well, and with stronger management and training, I think this location could be considerably better. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism rather than simply a complaint, because I would genuinely like to see this location improve. read more

Let me start off by saying that I have traveled the world and have eaten in many 3rd world countries. Many of those countries were gourmet joints compared to this place. We walked in and ordered our lunch. While waiting I decided to go wash my hands. The first thing that struck me was at 1:30 pm there was no soap in the dispenser. Then I thought, how do the employees properly wash their hands? Then I noticed the ceiling and mold and water stains. Had I not paid for my meal already, I would have walked out. The workers were pleasant and friendly I will say. The burgers were adequate but the tater tots were barely warm. The owner of this establishment should be embarrassed. Wash a few windows. Changes out the ceiling panels. Wipe the mold off of the vents. First and last time here. I'm rather concerned what the next 8 hours might bring me. read more

This place is serious need of a cleaning. The front door had probably a month worth of hand prints on it. The screen to order your food, just as filthy. The staff is great but the cleanliness is a huge issue here. The dividers between the booths were filled with hand prints. The fountain drinks tasted terrible so I'm sure this important equipment has not been serviced. I will not be back. Every time I come they forget my cheese sauce I PAY for, I have watched them scrape the whipped cream off my daughter's milk shake (which we put on the kiosk NO whipped cream) and still try to serve it to her half empty.. today I ordered grilled onions and this is what I got when I went up to ask for a proper amount I was told yes and after 5+ minutes passed I went back up obviously forgotten about. While the manager was in the kitchen on a phone call he had on speaker and you could hear the whole entire conversation (not work related) from the dinning room. DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE BATHROOMS, there is one girl who works here and I have to say she is just the sweetest and she does try but I am sadly convinced she is the only one trying. The hamburger and fries are good but the ordering system and automated beverage dispenser sucks! You can only order your meal by touch screen. For older customers this can be extremely difficult and frustrating!! I finally gave up trying to add a shake to my order. No customer service person to ask any questions or help. I saw several elderly people walk out without ordering. I saw another elderly person get help in ordering from a cook but it took nearly 15 minutes to place the order. It was comical! After you order you have to scan a bar code to get the drink machine to turn on. No free refills. Seems like this place is looking to go completely automated. I went to this place today. I like Steak'n Shake food. So my wife and I walk in and what do we see? Nothing! Well , not exactly nothing. But no workers. Just a bunch of big screens and no cashiers. No menu overhead. Just on the big touchscreens. Oh, and some alarm was going off, maybe for fries or something, and no one was cooking either. I'm pretty sure they wanted me to cook my own food too. Ordered pick up. All the shakes had no cherries so the kids were thrilled about that. I didn't notice that until they complained after I got home. ALL the tots were basically cold. All the fries were soggy and lukewarm and this was RIGHT AFTER I left the restaurant I decided to eat some fries and tots so it's not like I drove home and they cooled off in the car. ALL the grilled cheese sandwiches were supposed to have tomato lettuce some with bacon pickles etc, arrived home to find they were ALL PLAIN soggy grilled cheese. every time I drive by this location it's empty and now I know why. My mother passed a few days ago at the age of 89. We often visited this store and always loved it as Steak and Shake was my mom's favorite and was what she wanted in her last days. We always would meet after church on Sunday. It was our go to place for excellent food and staff. Mom's last time enjoying Steak and Shake was a couple Sundays ago always a regular hamburger with no pickle or mustard or cheese but everything else and those small thin fries and a chocolate malt which I had to pick-up. When I got to Mom and set it out on her table by the bed. We noticed the store made our order perfect and left a bonus in the bag we had not ordered Onion Rings another one of mom's favorites. My mom had not eaten much in her last days but ate everything along with that perfect chocolate malt to our surprise. She truly enjoyed it. I want to thank everyone at the store and the management for helping make those memories of my mom more memorable and showing love to us during this difficult time I will never forget the love we got visiting your store. Steak N Shake overall has just gone to the dogs! We have tried both locations near me, one in Cape Coral the other in Port Charlotte. Both restaurants were so dirty, no one cleans the tables, the acrylic booth dividers were disgusting! The AC ducts in the ceiling were horrendous, built up with grease and dust. The ceilings itself full of brown water stains. I can only imagine what's in those ceilings, as I am extremely allergic to mold. I watched the manager walk around with napkins in his hand doing nothing. They don't serve you, nor clean your table and yet a tip is requested at the kiosk. The food is Meh... they got it 50% right! This is my first and last visit since Ian. Disappointing to say the least. Walked in and found out I had to order from a kiosk. I did it but I had my 81 year old Dad with me, he never would have been able to use it. There's no way to add anything like cheese to your fries. When we got our food half was cold and soggy. Not sure about the milkshakes but I know they used to be better, always had to wait but it was worth it. Floor was sticky when I walked and bathroom was a mess. You have to use a kiosk to order, and there are no servers other than the kitchen crew. We tried to order milkshakes along with our meals, but the kiosk wouldn't allow it. A worker who came out of the back told us the truck didn't come. Huh? This is supposed to be Steak AND SHAKE! The burger was large and good. The steak frank was tasty but smaller than represented on the kiosk screen. The bathroom did not have any paper towels or blow dryer, and the soap dispensers were empty. Instead, they had a store-bought bottle of hand soap that was mostly water. Someone must have added a lot of water to what little soap had been in the bottom. I had to dry my hands on napkins in the dining room. Hardly anyone was there in the restaurant. Clearly the business has gone downhill. They used to have a bit of retro charm. I've been hearing and seeing references to Steak n Shake for 50 years but never actually saw one until now. A big problem with "fast" food restaurants is that they have accustomed the public to the "Big Lie" by showing huge hamburgers in their ads and delivering a burger half that size. SnS takes that up a notch by delivering a regular sized hamburger at a large burger price. The French Fries were roughly 1/3 the size of regular fries which we have come to accept as "normal". The Banana shake was soupy (thin) but tasted good. There was nothing that I could taste in the burger that was (to me) any different from hamburger. i had thought that perhaps...there would have been enough STEAK to be able to taste it. Service was good and friendly. Our lunch tasted great, but not so great as to put ourselves in the position of visiting a second time. This was my experience. Yours may vary. read more
