Fantastic take out experience, fast and intense staff for my Sunday night drop in for aint Oreo shake mobile order on the excellent app, this location is a sadly rare example of the mighty Steak and Shake that has fallen apart from the easy late night option we always enjoyed in days gone by. The all day and night hours have been narrowed down to remove the main appeal here alongside higher prices. The burgers are still tasty but there's better options now! This is the worst Steak n Shake I've ever been to. The garlic burger and milkshake were great. But you could only order at kiosks, no table service, and the drink machine wasn't working. The onion rings were stuck together and crumbling, but perhaps this is how they are at every location. I thru the unwanted addition on the floor! I used to enjoy going into the original Steak n Shake environment with friendly servers and freshly prepared foods. While in town visiting, I decided I wanted something I couldn't eat on the West Coast so I chose this location as it's always been good in the past. I ordered a garlic butter burger and a shake. The burger had so much garlic powder on it, it caused me to start sneezing uncontrollably because soon as I opened the paper I inadvertently inhaled a cloud of garlic dust, then I go go to take a drink of the shake and I can't because they give you very thin and fragile paper straws that dampen rather quickly rendering it unusable, not to mention the diameter of the straw is about 1.5mm. Excellent experience here, twice! Stopped by and didn't realize that all steak n shakes are now self service and that you order from new touch screens at the front of the store. Screens worked pretty well and staff was fast to make the food and excellent at helping get extra stuff I asked for (like extra spoons and other stuff). Place was clean and there were even clean picnic tables with umbrellas outside by the grass. On our second visit there was a problem redeeming a gift card on the kiosk, and the manager took care of everything so we didn't have to wait any longer. In general, Steak 'n Shakes are all pretty good. We had them in my home market of Milwaukee for a hot minute and I got hooked. Sadly, there were franchise issues and they had to pull out. Driving through Indiana, I couldn't resist the endless barrage of S&S advertising and convenient every freeway exit location, so we finally gave in and pulled over. Every S&S is about the same and this one is solidly average. The food is about a 3.5, the service is a 3 if you are lucky, but the value is a solid 4. The bathroom at this one was a literal shit-show, which there is really no excuse for. This location was understaffed on a Sunday afternoon so the wait was a bit longer than I would have liked. My dad and I stopped here for a quick bite to eat after running some errands. The waitress was absolutely phenomenal! She made our drinks (vanilla diet Coke and Cherry Coke) with extra flavor and love, the urgency to rush and refill our drinks was incredible, and the food came out perfectly and immediately!! She was outstanding. Our bill came out to be $9; my dad was dumbfounded with how cheap and wonderful the experience was. We had takeout this morning about 1am. The cashier was crazy absent minded and sid everything very slow. The order took forever to get finished and there was nobody else in the restaurant. We used a coupon and that threw her off even more. When we got home part of our order was incorrect. Been going here middays for the past year every once in a while. First, let me say Tiffany (I think her name is) at the drive thru window is super. Always pleasant, plus she has not gotten one thing wrong on our orders in the past year. When you tell her you want fries, you get fries. And more fries, which beat the heck, by the way, of every other fast food chain. The lettuce, tomatoes and onions are always fresh looking, tasty and crisp. The burger meat beats every other chain. Their legendary shakes are great. This place beats the heck over other chains tasteless over processed offerings. Sure, the drive thru is a bit slow but consider they repeat your order and make sure all of the order items, which include dressings like lettuce, cheese, salt etc take more time. Then each sandwich is hand made to your order. That takes more time than pulling a dried burger in a clown suit from its three hours under a heat lamp. First of all, we waited 16 minutes in the drive thru at 9:30 at night. We ordered a kids meal and two number 17s with two shakes , Oreo and strawberry. The dark skin guy with dreads was making the shakes and we looking at him through the drive thru menu, and he literally rimmed the top of the ice cream in the cup and stuck his finger and his mouth to lick it off! I came here last night around 1 to get some food. The drive through was extremely quicker than normal, and the food was hot, which I didn't expect it to be since it was so late. By far the most positive experience I have had at Steak 'n Shake in Merrillville. This morning I woke up feeling sick, and haven't been able to eat anything since without getting nauseous. Within the last 10 minutes I just puked, and I could clearly see my undigested fries and chicken strips that I ate 15 hours prior. I stopped in on a late Sunday afternoon with my family...the wife and my three boys. Outside - It's hard to get to currently because of the construction but nonetheless you can get to it...plenty of parking spots Inside - It's a decent looking restaurant. They have limited booths and the tables that we sat at were all wobbly. I don't like wobbly tables...fortunately for me the boys think it's funny to make the cups go back and forth on the table...sarcasm at it's best here people. Also, I could not help to notice all of the "dirty" tables, it looked like they only cleaned the tables when they had to for the next customer. Service - Our waitress was fine but we only saw her twice...when she took our order and when she dropped off the check. So you might be thinking well who took care of you in between...some other waitress who really seemed disinterested but did take care of our requests ... we had to ask for silverware, ketchup, our side orders that we ordered...all in a days works when we go to a restaurant....right? Oh...also we waited nearly 25 minutes for our food...it felt like 45 minutes but the turnaround time was not fast. We only ordered burgers. Food - The fries were cold...the burger was good...really liked the burger but again, fries were cold...two ways to say the same thing... I do have to mention that my boys really enjoyed the little steak and shake hat that they got along with the cardboard car that they got as part of the kids menu...it made those 25 minutes go by a lot easier. If you like milkshakes and burgers...this place is good. Don't bother with anything else on the menu.
