Ah, lunch. We haven't tried the Steak and Shake at this location, and I'm making an effort to try all the restaurants in an area, so we decided to Steak and Shake it today. When we arrived at the front door, the right side door wasn't unlocked, so we tried the left side, and got in. This is a "kiosk" restaurant - they have 4 TV screens where you order your meal, and several people hustling to make the food in the back. We both ordered single cheeseburger combos with fries. I got a strawberry shake (suggested sale from the street sign!). You grab your own drink cup and help yourself (except for the shakes). The shake arrived next in a tall glass shake cup, topped with whipped cream and a cherry. A few minutes later, our meal was called. The burgers were hot and juicy as you would expect from Steak and Shake, and the fries were very hot and tasty. The ketchup pump wasn't working well - they had some pre-served in cups with covers, but that has to be fixed. The mens room was okay, but the fixtures had some really nasty black stuff in them and were gross. How hard is it to remove the old deodorizers? read more

Very few things right with this specific Stake and Shake. After a long day of shopping, my family and I went to Stake Shake hoping for a great meal with great service. Instead, we got our food made entirely incorrect. We ordered 4 burgers and 2 fries, and we were short a fry, and EACH AND EVERY burger we had was made incorrectly. One burger was a single bacon cheeseburger, with nothing else on it, and we instead got a regular cheeseburger! DO NOT GO HERE, SERVICE WILL BE TERRIBLE!! read more

I ordered ahead I got the confirmation that they received our order, saying it would be ready at 11:13am. I pulled into drive thru at 11:14 - keep in mind there isn't another car in the parking lot - not an employee or any customers- They are confused when I say I'm picking up an order. they said pull to parking spot #1, why not have me sit at the window? So I sit waiting until 11:29 for them to walk 3 burgers to my car in the snow and ice. Zero customers pulled in while I waited, I could've sat at the window and saved the poor woman a trip. It's fast food, you get exactly what you expect. Besides the first word 'fast' sat for 15 minutes with just waters on our table. No one came by to take our order. Left. Drive through is alright tho. Avoid dining in this specific location. Edit: alright, redemption time. Went in late tonight and the food and service was way quicker than what it used to be. The girl who was serving us was really happy and polite. They were out of mushrooms for some reason for the mushroom Swiss burger but I guess it was midnight so whatevs. Went with the Jalapeño crunch burger. Tasted great and spicy. Still a good and cheap fast food place to grab food when you need to. They made up for the last couple times I was there so hopefully the service is just as good during peak hours as it was at 11:30pm. I came this last Wednesday, hoping for a quick stop on my lunch break. I ordered a shake and chili, pretty simple. I somehow waited over 15 minutes behind about 4 cars...the wait was never ending. I honestly thought about driving off, but that's not my style. I FINALLY get to the window (no sorry for your extreme wait) and I pay. She hands me my shake first I'm about to put it in my cup holder and the entire top pops off (not secure) and proceeds to chug out ALL OVER my cup holders, seat, and jacket. I attempt to control the spillage all while the employee is watching. I'm like can I get napkins for this? She does. A minute later hands me the chili, which was the worst timing so I was trying to deal with the soggy mess. She says "hope it's not that bad", yeah sister it is! I wanted to elaborate further with my last review. Last time I went they were lacking in back kitchen staff and sending waiters home who just got there. Took about 30 minutes waiting for 1 burger, 1 chili dog, and some fries, which they basically gave my order to the closest people they saw and didn't ask who ordered what, we had to look in the bags and figure out ourselves. The chili was barely warm which was the reason why we waited for so long, the guy heating up the chili did it via microwave and used a large tub with all of the chili instead of using a smaller container which would've reduced our wait time by at least 10 minutes. They got a couple people's orders wrong, to the point where the cashier and guy on the grill were trying to convince people to not get a refund. This man didn't want fries and was charged for fries. He asked for a refund and the grill guy said "If you get a refund it'll only be like 40 cents, I don't think it's worth it." It was a mess. The supervisor was also present, trying her hardest to seem like she wasn't aware people were upset with the service and joking around with the waiters. read more

I've been in the service industry for almost 8 years now and I'm usually very lenient when it comes to mess ups but today I came in already having a bad day to treat myself to a mint shake. The lady in the drive they sounded kinda rude and un livley. So whatever... i get up to he window and give the lady my card info and it takes a few minutes for her to give it backZ she asks me if I can move further up and she will bring my order up..no problem. Except for the fact that I waited 15 minutes until I got annoyed and just went inside. They had no clue about my order. Looked like the guy next to me was waitin also. So we sat and waited together. The guy got his order first and he asked for whipped cream the girl at the front said "we don't do that unless you pay extra" the man scoffed and walked away. She totally could have given him it since he had to wait so long! some of the crew members were shooting the shit in the corner which I thought was unprofessional. I finally got my order 29 minutes later without a straw and no one even said sorry. All in all I think the team needs a sprucing up. The entire experience was frustrating and very blah. And for the record I'm not complaining to get free anything. I genuinely hope that team improves. Everyone seemed like they hated their jobs. read more

I'm generally a fan. The Frisco Melt is my go-to lunch and dinner order, but it is kind of a drag that it no longer comes with lettuce and tomato. I kind of prefer thicker fries over their shoestring variety. If you show up during their breakfast hours the pancakes are actually pretty good. Not sure if they are buckwheat or what, but they kind of remind me johnny cakes which use corn meal instead of flour. Lots of shake combinations. One of my favorites is orange freeze with added hot fudge. I don't care for the cookie dough shake even though that is usually one of my favorite ice cream flavors. Highly recommend the cookie butter shake if they ever bring it back. I don't usually bother going here during busy hours. One of the things I like best about this place is that it is 24 hours. I've never had to wait terribly long for service. read more

Fantastic, amazing, and unbelievable are not words to describe this local eatery, but the service has never been terrible, nor slow. The crew is always friendly, and courteous. That alone is something to be praised in this town where most of the restaurant staff are college kids that could care less about being nice or helpful. Not quite worthy of 5 stars in my book, not yet. But seriously you need to think about where you are eating. This is a pleasant burger joint, that has pretty decent food, and a polite staff. Don't expect your world to be rocked by a steakburger... It just won't happen. read more

The only reason this fast food joint is even receiving a star is because the food was AMAZING. I throughly enjoyed my burger, fries and milkshake! However, the employees are down right rude, obnoxious and careless. When we entered the restaurant an employee never greeted us and proceeded to drop our menus on a random table without even pausing. She then went into the kitchen and started screaming orders and commands at her other employees who laughed and mocked her. Extremely unprofessional. Throughout our whole experience the employees would argue, bicker, complain and scream at each other when they were upset. This was my first time at a Steak N' Shake, and will be my last. The food is ok, as close to a local drive in as there is here. The place is a filthy mess. Every time we come in there are 4-6 employees standing around the server station talking and leaning. There is always 2-4 or more dirty tables being ignored. The floor hasn't been mopped in years I suspect. The black and white tile really show the neglect. The table caddy, salt, pepper, ketchup and mustard is gross. The dried, crusty mustard fingerprints on the squeeze bottle is cringe inducing. Don't bother trying to get someone to take care of it, they are busy ignoring the dirty tables. Service is just adequate, just. There are more employees than customers, and the place is a pig pen. The food is ok, my burger was clearly cooked on a dirty flat top. It smelled a bit like a grease trap. The prices are decent, but I'd pay more if they actually cleaned the place. The place was a little cleaner, we were the only ones in the joint. The food came out much faster than any other time. The food was fine. The waitress that rang us out had the most disgusting dirty fingernails I've ever seen on a person serving food. Glad she wasn't our server. As we were leaving, my 9 yr old convinced my wife into letting him have 50 cents for a gum ball style vending machine. It took the two quarters and gave out nothing. My wife asked the employee behind the register to refund our money and she rudely said they were third party venders and they weren't responsible. What? The faulty machines are in your business. The vendors are paying rent for the space that the broken machines are taking, right by the cash registers. Next to the claw machine and other money grabbers. I asked for the manager, and it took her several minutes to arrive. She also said, very rudely, that they are third party blah blah blah....nothing she could do, not their property. I asked if I could go out and get a crowbar and pop open the change box and retrieve my stolen money? I was told no, that would be destructive to their property and the police would be called. What? Thought it was third party, not theirs. The manger ran her mouth nonstop and would not let me explain to her the stupidity of her argument. Very immature and rude. So badly trained that she was willing to dig her heals in to the point of losing much future business as well as the nonstop negative social networking I am willing to provide against this clip joint over 50 cents. She was so rude another customer was trying to give me 50 cents to give to my son so he didn't think everyone was as ignorant as the no mind managing the Steak and Shake in DeKalb, IL. I have frequented many other Steak n Shakes before the DeKalb location, and honestly this location could learn a thing or two from those. My husband and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, and it was pretty busy. We weren't seated right away and were greeted with a fake "hi, how are you". When we thought we were going to be taken to a table, she seats someone else without making it clear who she was going to seat. Then when we were eventually taken to a table, it wasn't clean. We had to stand and wait for the hostess to clean it. It took about 10 minutes for the server to acknowledge that we were waiting to order. Drinks took a long time to arrive. But the server alone was pleasant and made ordering easy. I ordered the double steakburger with no cheese and fries, my husband ordered the Frisco melt. It took about 30 minutes for us to get our food. Once we got our food I was underwhelmed. Normally the burger patties are a lot bigger, but these looked a lot smaller than the ones I've come to expect from this chain. My burger was also cold (hubby's was hot), but at least my fries were hot, and with the fries being so good it somewhat made up for the burger. It was so busy, that I didn't even get a chance to complain until my plate was almost clean. I was hungry, and didn't want to wait for a remake (and risk them messing up my order) so I ate it anyway. Again, it's good thing the fries were hot. Aside from my burger being cold, it tasted good. The server was more than apologetic, and he did ask me if I would like another one, even though my burger was almost gone. He also let the manager/cook know about what happened. When we took our receipt to pay, the cashier asked which one of our orders was the burger, and I said it was mine. She apologized and comped my part of the bill (the whole $4). If it hadn't been for the cold-burger mishap I would've given this location 4 stars. Worst decision I've made was to stop at Steak 'n Shake for one shake. I waited 23 minutes and when I got it, there was no apology for the very long wait. I asked the employee what the problem was and she said "well, it's busy and there's only one person here." Late night drive thru is a nightmare. Never eating here again. As a person who has very weird hours for work I thought I would stop by Steak N' Shake for a late night bite after a long night of work. The person on the other end of the speaker informed us it would be between 10 and fifteen minutes before they could even take my order. I'm not sure why they needed to wait that long to write the order down. I could understand if the oil needed to be changed and heated up and I had to wait after giving them my order. But making me sit in front of the speaker for 17 minutes was a bit drastic. I really didn't want to go find anything else at 3:30 am. So, I waited. They took my order and I pulled up to the window. I handed my card to the girl on the other side who took a rather long time to ring the exchange. Once she handed me the card I was again left waiting for another 15 minutes for my food. My food finally came in the form of a wrinkled bag that was thrust through the window into my car with the words "Here's your food" coming from the person forcing the bag into my car. I asked if I could have a few salt and peppers. He said "We don't have peppers." and walked away from the window. I waited again because I still had an iced tea. Trying to get the attention of anyone inside was in vein. I checked the bag to make sure I at least had the proper food. No napkins in a bag where the buffalo sauce was tossed in and spilled all over my food. This was LITERALLY the worst experience I've ever had in any exchange of goods and services for my money. I understand working fast food isn't the best job and it can sometimes be stressful but there was only one person in front of me and the entire 35 minutes I waited, no one showed up behind me. Whenever I am craving a Frisco Melt or a juicy burger topped with fried onions, I hit this place. While it is true they often have few people on staff, service is never slow. I have gone in many times and never had to wait more than five minutes for a server, once we were ready to order. My orders have always been correct, hot or cold (depending on the food), and fresh. Both the eating area and the restrooms are clean and well maintained, and the staff is courteous to a tee. Coupons are mailed to locals monthly, and they are certainly worth a trip. I have also used their drive-through and was not disappointed. Prompt service, hot food and a courteous attendant: all I could ask for. I gave them four out of five for the simple fact that I am not a huge burger fan, preferring more varied foods. But when I do want a burger, this is my place to go. read more

December 3 decided steak and shake would be a good dinner bet. I'm new to the area and this is my first time going to this location. We walk in and it's like high school detention silent. No music no "Hi, how are you" the three tables that had customers were dead silent to, like were literally whispering to talk because of how quiet it was. There were literally two kitchen staff who you would have thought were pursuing kitchen workers by the silence, plus one manager. The manager just looked disgusted that two more people had walked in an hour before close (i get it, but it happens). As we figured out we had to use the kiosk to order food instead of the person to person interaction, the manager gives direction that he's gonna go start getting the dining room cleaned up while they get the kitchen cleaned up. Nobody acknowledges him, but he doesn't get started on the dining room either. As we go sit down, EVERY TABLE is disgusting (food, wrappers, spilled drinks). A jail cell toilet is cleaner then this dining room. One tiny table against the windows was clean so we sat there. The store is still dead silent, like nobody is comfortable talking. We go to grab our drinks, the garbage hole next to the fountain machine has no garbage can inside and people were just tossing their trash in it regardless. The store is still dead silent like high school detention. Food wasn't even hot when we got it except the fries. Not a chance will I be coming back here. read more

Steak N Shake is (normally) a great fast food chain, but this is one of the locations that gives them a bad reputation. Food here is decent, but service is sub par, and the tables and chairs are often dirty. I have come here a number of times at night around 7 or 8 PM, not late for a 24 hour joint, and found service to be incredibly slow. Had the place been packed or at an odd hour of the night/wee hours of morning, I could understand slow service, but service was slow due to all the talking between employees. On my last visit, it took us a good two to three minutes before we were approached for a table, even though there were several employees talking, and glancing at us. I will need to take a photo next time to help show how dirty some of the tables and chairs are - there were crumbs all over, but my boyfriend did not want to complain. The last issue I want to note is, my shakes are always screwed up here - I ordered a chocolate strawberry shake, and literally got a chocolate shake with strawberries. The waitress was friendly, and blamed their new employee manning the shakes. I have had a few other issues getting shakes here, to the point I'm not sure that was true, but I will leave it there. I would like to add, some of the staff here are very friendly and do a fine job. The waitress we had last time, minus the shake and cleaning problems, was very attentive, and we had a similar experience with a waiter there in past as well. If the cleaning problems and service issues (namely the shakes and seating issues) could be fixed, I would be happy to give the place a much better review. read more

Very disappointed by my last trip to this location. Took a LONG time to get service, our water was never refilled, and worst of all, my nephew with very severe allergies was served a burger with mayonaise after being assured the waiter would let the cooks know he has allergies! Thankfully it was caught quickly and he didn't consume much, and they remade it (which took a VERY long time) and comped the meal. Overall not very satisfied with mediocre food and slow service.
